Hi Tomtomtom, the Briggs mower engines should last for many years with minimal annual maintenance but won't last the first day without oil. As for your knocking noise, heavy grass might be wrapped around the driveshaft or there may have been something besides grass in the lawn. It probably needs a cleaning, especially inside the drive belt housing. Good luck.

Craftsman lawn mower Model No 917.376080 , 6.5 hp

After two seasons of operation , the motor start knocking in heavy grass. This knocking did increase gradually . i tchec the oil level and I stop using it , thiking the problem could be coming from the piston retaining bolts and could be degraded by continuing using it
I hesitate opening the motor after a such limiterd use.I cannot belive a Brigg Straton engine whith their bacground would last longer than that.
May be someone among you had experience such a problem

After going round and round with Sears on this, I finally solved my own problem. Evidently, the manual for this mower is incorrect. You cannot buy the cable seperately! Part # 195412 will not fit this model. You need to order part # 187804, which is the entire drive control, including the cable. Many of the Sears parts are manufactured by Husqvarna, and I had to go them for help in resolving this issue.

http://www.hammerwall.com/Download_Manual/123292/ this is the link for your manual, it will help you trouble shoot the problem. It could be as easy as desbri in the wheels as stated here DRIVE WHEELS Check rear drive wheels each time before you mow to be sure they move freely. The wheels not turning freely means trash ,grass cuttings, etc. are in the drive wheel area and must be cleaned to free drive wheels. If necessary to clean the drive wheels, be sure to clean both rear wheels. or As seen on page 16 your drive belt may be warn or broken and need to be replaced and they show step by step replacement.

Hello Conmegian! Here it are some tips for this particular mower common troubleshooting questions.

Owner's Manual CRAFTSMAN° ROTARY LAWN MOWER -700 Series Briggs & Stratton Engine Power-Propelled 22" Multi-Cut-Model No.917.374352

Starter rope hard to pull

Engine flywheel brake is on when control bar is released.

Bent engine crankshaft.

Blade adapter broken.

Blade dragging in grass.

1. Depress control bar to upper handle before pulling the starter rope.

2. Contact a Sears or other qualified service center.

3. Replace blade adapter.

4. Move lawn mower to cut grass or to hard surface.

Hard to push

1. Grass is too high or wheel height is too low.

2. Rear of mower housing or blade dragging in grass.

3. Grass catcher too full!.

4. Handle height position not right for you.

1. Raise cutting height.

2. Raise rear of mower housing one (1) setting higher.

3. Empty grass catcher.

4. Adjust handle height to suit.

Hope this helps~Carmen

My drive cable snapped, so I ordered a replacement, part # 195412. When I received the part, the connection to the drive wheels was the same, but the connection into the drive control assembly was different. All Sears could tell me was that maybe they sent the wrong part, and they will resend. I cannot find a picture online, so I'm fearful I will just get another wrong part. Seems to be the same problem Jeffrey200 had back in June 2010, but no responses to his question. Can anyone provide a picture of what part # 195412 is supposed to look like.....or any other recommendations?

Hi Mrockhol, you pretty near got it right. First, don't do this on the driveway or walkway. Then, connect the hose and start the mower, turn on the water til you think its cleaned out underneath, then turn off the water but let the blade run to dry things out a little. Enjoy the new Craftsman.

I just purchased a Craftsman 22" mower Model # 917.370680. It has a blue Washout Port connection. I wondering just how to utizile this cleaning fuction for the underside of the mower. For example, attach a water hose, turn-on the water, and turn on the mower for a few cycles. This is no direction in the Owners Manual.

This brand new 2010 model has been repaired once already, but It wot start. It couldn't be because it's dirty. As a matter of fact it's only been used three times. I have always used fresh gas. I hate this thing. Any suggestions on a fix ?

Hi triple B, thanks for using MySears. Try starting it without the airfilter to exclude that as the problem, then i would be looking for cracks in the primer or any tubing that could cause a vacuum leak in the carb. Good luck.

mower is possessed

I am out of ideas with this mower, model#917.378361. i purchased this mower inJune of 0/3. I moved to Jackson,Tn. in 06. It seems eversince I have been cutting bermuda grass instead of kentucky blue with the mower it does not want to start. I had it to a repair shop and had the carb cleaned, the needle and seat replaced, the bowl gasket replaced, new plug, and air cleaner. It started on the first pull for less than a month. Now , nothing. Drained the gas tank, again, put a small amount of sta-bil in a new tank of fresh gas, changed the oil and follow the maintenance schedule to a T. It is housed in a shed, cleaned after every cut and it still wont

start! Any new ideas?

Don't think so. The manual does not recommend cleaning the underside with a hose, and there's no spigot. The Blue Crew man had the answer for me about tipping the mower the other way.
