Depending on the filament of the light, the vibration/cold could make you go through bulbs fast.

I have a LED light that straps to my head, or headgear, that works wonders.

Does your snow blower have a wiring harness coming out of the shroud? If not , you can use a clamp on bicycle light that is battery powered.

I would start by loosening the starter up again and making sure nothing in there is binding up. Just curious, why did you replace the cord? Was it frayed or cut or damaged? Maybe remove the starter and power it up and see if it spins, if not it could have been it's last start or the maybe it's wires are crossed. If you have a multi meter you could check for connectivity at the plug and follow it until you find where it stops. But if it starts at least you can use it if needed and it would take the problem away form the machine itself.

MG,

Thanks for the reply...Found out today the unit though 5 or 6 years old, was only used one winter...how many times that winter unknown...I'll give that a shot...funny, it was working just fine, next time I tried it, nothing...like a dead battery, which there is none...:) Worth a shot, the machine moves 7 inches of snow with no problem...love it...best $300.00 I ever spent...It does start with the pull rope, on the second pull, but I want the electric start to work in case the wife ever wanted/had to use it...

Could be full of road sand after 4 or 5 years. Two bolts and some WD40 might free it up. Common starter if you look for a used one. Good luck.

The only thing I can suggest is to clean the friction disc and wheel. Most 'dirt', primarily oil and grease on either/or the wheel and disc will reduce friction and hence 'drive'.

I use mineral spirits to clean mine. I was puzzled for a while as to why they kept getting 'oily' and I was losing 'drive', until i realised that the cranckcase breather for the engine terminated just above the housing for that part of the drive. After extending the breather and performing an annual 'clean' of the disc and wheel I have had no more problems in that area for several years.

Concerning the amateur doing his own work, If someone has a little mechanical aptitude, I would suggest they purchase a manufacturer's service manual that covers their particular engine. ( most I think have Briggs and Stratton) These manuals have chapters dedicated to each function of the engine and make it much easier to service. As miketech stated, it can be done with care, and with a little experience under your hat you can accomplish a lot.

Shadetree,

Good call. I would also suggest draining all of the old fuel out of the tank and carburator bowl. Also clean the high speed jet and any passages in the carb. (Not really a job for the amature but can be done with care).

Probably the most prevalent starting failure in snowthrowers is old gas. Either left over from summer (yes there is a difference between fuel formulated for summer use and that formulated for winter use) or even left over from the previous year.

DRB,

Source code 536 is Murray Manufacturing. The latest consumer contact number I have is 1 800 251 8007.

I assume you are looking for parts for the blower itself. How much help they will be is questionable, but is worth a try. I also checked our parts listing and found some parts still available. Further Chains and belts can be matched at a good hardware store or automotive store. Some parts will have to be jury-rigged but that can be done also.

Your engine (model 143.754102) is actually a tecumseh engine. While tecumseh went out of business about a year ago, many parts are still available in the aftermarket. Contact a good, long-lived small engine dealer in your area and I am sure one of them would be able to help. Look for certified small engine dealers displaying either the Briggs, Kohler or Tecumseh logo's.

What parts are you looking for? Engine parts may still be avalable from small engine supply places, and they should be able to find sutable replacements for cables and such. Auto parts stores should be able to match up drive belts.

Snow blower hesitates in drive

I have a 29"/9.5hp Craftsman that 'hesitates' when in drive. Gear position doesn't matter.

I've changed the belt and friction wheel. Everything is adjusted as per Craftsman recommendation. Pulling the cable doesn't make a difference. Auger still works. It's worse when it's really cold out. It will drive for a while, then stop...eventually it will go again, but will be intermittent for a while.

Thoughts?
