Hi momameme, thanks for using MySears. If rocking it back and forth doesn't let you change gears then something may be locked up in the transmission. There is a parts illustration at PartsDirect (above) to see the gearing. Good luck.

Hi Portage, thanks for using MySears. There are 30 pages of tiller manuals at Sears ManageMyLife.com. Nothing came up for Lazy Boy or 12036 but maybe you can find one like it there. Is it front tine or rear tine and are the shearpins intact?

Troy Bilt was made by Gardenway Corp. in Troy NY,that is true.It would seem that at some point Gardenway acquired Parmi Tool Co. of Lynn,Indiana, which manufactured the Lazy Boy tiller(and nothing to do with the furniture brand). It is true that MTD owns the TRoy-Bilt name now but there is no evidence that they support the Lazy Boy equipment.

This is an edit to a previous post with information that I acquired at a later time.My apologies for any misinformation or confusion

Have you tried calling MTD to ask them if they have any information on it? I heard Troy-Bilt used to manufactured by Gardenway but they went bankrupt. Some people have said MTD bought a part of Gardenway's product line out of bankruptcy but they orphaned a lot of other products. MTD might have some information.

disc cultivator

Do you have a Craftsman garden tractor or lawn tractor? A garden tractor with a sleeve hitch is required when using the current ground engaging attachments. They do sell a tow behind tiller you can use with a lawn tractor or a garden tractor.

The Craftsman #24206 serated disc typically has to have weight added to get better results. Typically you would plow dry soil first and then try to break up the big clods of soil with other attachments like a tiller, disc, or cultivator. I have a disc like it with round discs. These disc attachments are typically used to make seed beds in a small garden. My favorite attachments for plowing a vegetable garden are a middle buster plow and a cultivator with sweeps and shovels. I have found the 1970's version of these attachments to be the most effective.

Have you contacted your county extension office and asked them to tell you how to grow grass? They can test your soil to see what is needed and provide you with information on what the best types of grass to grow. They usually have charts that tell you when the best time of year to plant, aerate, etc.

You might want to consider putting down sod instead especially if you have already got a good finish grade. You could end up washing out the existing grade if a big rain comes before the grass can grow. Red clay can be really tough soil to deal with. I usually add something like Stay-Soft gypsum to clay soil when growing a garden in it. Gypsum helps to soften up clay and you can pick up a bag of it at your local garden center. A bag of lime can be a big help towards the right Ph if needed also.

My advice is to contact your county extension office and ask them to help you figure out what you need first. Then you can make an educated attempt at growing grass on your lawn. Some types of grass seed can be put down without scratching it in.

how good are these for turning up red clay dirt(N.C.) I want to seed grass on my new yd. some parts of it are packed down from equipment running over it. If it would work, how much weight to put on it,since I'd be pulling it with my 20 horse lawn tractor. I don't have hitch kit on it, would I be able to use it without it? (3000 series tractor) I see they are offering the disc for $249.00,but they don't give you dimensions,it may be too short to use if i can't turn reasonably with out hitting tires. would appreciate any info on this, thanks,Bob

Gear Drive or Chain Drive for Craftsman Tiller

skraps said…

Hello,

I have narrowed my choice down between two Craftsman Tillers, I am going to buy one of them in the next day or so.

I like the Model #29932 the best and Model #29930 next.

The question I have is what is best, Gear Driven or Chain Driven? This will help me make a decision on which one that I purchase

The 29932 is chain driven and is a bit larger. The 29930 is gear driven and is smaller, although there are a couple of things I like about it better.

Thanks

Go with a gear driven unit. Get the heavy duty worm drive. They will outlast the chain by three or four times.

I just went through four chain drive units. All of them were over 1400 a piece. The chains and gears are too small inside the housing and the seals were always in constant need of repair. I consider the chain units junk unless they can make them more sturdier and the seals more sealed from the elements.

As a rule, there is a clevis pin that has to go thru a hole in the tine hub and another hole in the drive shaft.Thats what makes the tine drive as opposed to just spinning around on the shaft.

Cant really say much more specific than that in this case, the "OHH60" model number is just the engine number.

I recently received a 6 hp, 18 inch chain drive Tecumseh yard machine tiller model # OHH60 and the tiller blades spin freely by hand including when in the " wheels forward " position. The engine has an issue which will start for short periods and will not idle. It sat for many years. My question is about the blades. Shouldn't they lock up in the "wheels forward" position, or could there be something wrong in the transmission as well. Thanks, GAGONZ@yahoo.com

I bought a Craftsman tiller last year-Model No. 917.299011. I was able to use the tiller for only a very short time before it stopped working. I took it in for service on 5-1-10. The store never called me when service was completed. I picked up the tiller in June or July 2010. I tried to use it and it would not start. I called the store and was told that since the tiller is "used", I was really out of luck, but that the manager would call me. That was a week ago-no call.

I paid for a working tiller. I want a working tiller. Craftsman used to be a great brand. This tiller is junk.

Just my $.02, bur the rear time is the easiest to break ground with, do yearly turnover, and best/easiest type of tiller.

UNLESS, you are cultivating between plants/rows of plants or working in tight spaces. I own one of the 24" Craftsman front tine, and I love it. It takes a little more effort each spring, but I paid a lot less to own my 24" than to continue to rent the 18-20" rear over the last two years and I remove two tines and get to cultivate, trench, and "edge" the garden with fence on three sides.

If you have lost of room to turn, rear tine it. If space is paramount, and can deal with a little extra work on occasion, I'm happy with a front tine. Again just my $.02, but each has it's place.

Here's a copy and paste for the manual at Sears ManageMyLife.com. Looks like a standard grease fitting, calls for 1 oz EP #1 on page 16.
