It's great to hear people hanging on to american made products. Some websites have lists of american made products but they haven't been updated in a while. You really have to do your homework to make sure you are getting american made products.

I purchased some made in USA Armstrong hand tools recently. Some of the Armstrong hand tools have been dropped from some industrial tool suppliers catalogs, and I think it is because those specific tools are no longer made in USA.

Sears Corporate,

Your greed just missed the boat. I realize when times are tough you have to make a change, Selling out to china is good for who . The corporate bigwigs & the slave labor in china are working. Taking an american icon & selling out is your downfall. I know the "white collars" have never used a handtool. Let's hope you try a made in china tool and see for yourself that quality is not being delivered . Charging us the same price & stating our labor cost is too high is more about greed. You lost the only thing holding your corporation. I will never step foot into Sears ever again, but remember when Sears had it all.

Likely from one of my posts elsewhere on this site.

Canada supplies about 20% of US oil imports almost twice as much as the next highest supplier, Mexico.

In some earlier posts I have quoted that Mexico had supplied more oil to the US than all OPEC countries combined. The source I quoted for this: -

http://www.eia.gov/totalenergy/data/annual/showtext.cfm?t=ptb0504

no longer shows that to have been the case. My apologies.

I do not know about Indoesia, you may be correct. I am not going to research it.

I no longer live in Portland, OR, but when we did there was a steel maker there, Oregon Steel Mills. Other than the name and the feedstock of scrap one would never have known it was a steel producer. Admittedly they used scrap and pig iron for their feed stock ie did not produce steel from ore.

Without looking it up, as I recall Indonesia is a member of OPEC that imports more oil than it exports. The US produces technology. As a resident of Portland, would you rather be hometown to the cleanrooms of Flir or the smokestacks of a US Steel?

So just where would you like the iron and steel to be used in the US to be manufactured?

Where would you like forges, foundries and rolling mills to be located?

Where would you want the mines for coal, iron ore and other minerals used in metals production to be situated?

Should you wish for any of these to be located outside the US then the US will have to produce ‘something’ that they can sell to the outside world to pay for these goods that the US will have to import.

As a whole US citizens have, in my opinion, little idea where much of their imports originate. Take oil for example, without looking it up; do all the countries of OPEC export more oil to the US than say Mexico?

Who wants their son or daughter working in a forge casting molten steel? Or mining coal to fire those furnaces? Tanning leather or stitching shoes? The American Industrial Revolution has evolved to CAD/CAM, software design, internet (communty moderators) and cutting edge technology in all fields. Forging sockets and ratchets... not in my back yard.

I live/work in a factory. We build cars. It would make me sick to think I would lose my job to another county. China who cares...... I dont know how sears thinks we can buy their freaking pruducts if we dont have jobs.. They might say they couldnt stay in buisness if they didnt out source.. All the means is they will sell out all their hourly workers so they salory rich can stay rich.

Just out of curiosity, are ALL of the parts you use to build the cars made in the USA. Are the tools and machines and thier parts made in the USA? I have a Chevy and there are parts that are made in Mexico and Japan. I know for a fact that some of the Ford cars are assembled in Mexico

          bishopjoshua said…

Not to turn this into a political debate, but the problem is that it is so much cheaper to produce stuff over seas and still sell it for the same price so the make a bigger profit. The only way to get Sears and other stores to stop this is to not buy anything that doesn't say "Made in the USA" because there are many products that are not made here and don't say where they were made. The only way to correct this problem accross the board is to tell you elected officials that you don't support out sourcing of US jobs and that you are againts NAFTA and any other free trade agreements that reduce the cost to import goods to the US, because there is no way we can compete because when you pay your workers a fraction of what a the average US work makes, you can aways under cut a us manufacturer.

and by reinstituting these import taxes you can help so many more people then with out them. you have the US worker by forcing companies to keep manufacturing jobs in the US and helping lower the unemployment and also redue the amount of taxes the federal government needs to collect to run its self. Last time I check when everything coming into the US was taxed the government only need to collect 50% if not less of what they need to run the government; compared to what they collect now which is around 90 plus percent of what they need to run the federal government.

Well, any who sorry for the rant, hopes everyone has a great day.

Exactly. Will these people buy Craftsman tools if the price doubles or triples because they are made in the USA ?? No they will start complaining about that

Again I ask everyone to open their computers. While someone said there are computers assembled in the USA, I guarantee there are parts inside that were made overseas. Are the people who are upset over tools from overseas driving Fords or Chevrolets, or are they driving Toyotas and Hondas. Look under the hoods of your American car, bet there are parts made overseas!!

Why do they not boycott EXXON, who gets the oil from overseas? Chevron also gets it from overseas. No on seems to care about those things being made overseas! Why not??

Should the US not have 'gone metric', and the process is not yet complete, US goods would have faired even worse in the world market, as it is the US still has little tons and little gallons, I believe they are the only major nation still using these measurements. In the technical world people generally want to be able to compare apples with apples without having to resort to conversion factors.

I know it is a pain when the system that you grew up with is altered but in a world economy it does make things a lot easier if everyone speaks the same language.

I just don't understand how the whole outsourcing thing started. I'm 54 so I can remember when just about everything was made right here in the USA. So did all the companies get together and say, "Hey, let's get the communist chinese to make our stuff on the cheap, but we'll still charge American buyers the same price. We'll make lots of dough and no one will notice."

And it's not as if you can just stop buying everything. I mean, you do have to have shoes, appliances, and so on. But when, exactly, did it all start?

There's no way American workers can compete with folks who work for 3rd world wages (you just can't live on that here)---and we shouldn't have to.

When , How the hole thing started? Thats a good question!

I saw the shift to forign products as a youngster when I started to realise some of my toys were being made overseas back in the 70's.

I have heard many arguments of why but no one word can tell the story. I would have to blame it on a few different things.

government, coorperate greed, our own short sighted way of looking at things

Think about the vicious cycle of things between the worker/unions, governmant and thier overburdening with rules and regulations and taxes in all forms and the overpaid from the get go coorperate world with thier refusal to accept anything less than filthy riches!

Every action one faction took the other did something to side step or lessen the blow in some manner! We are all guilty but in my opinion the largest portion of the blame is on the political and corperate segemnt as they are the ones who ither let it happen or decided they were too good to accept reaonable paychecks and moved production offshore to keep thier crazzy profit margins.

I firmly belive our forfathers are turning over in thier graves with what we have done to this great nation and if they were alive would probably have already started an new revolution!

Some people have pointed out that we all use some type of forign product and I wont deny my computer isnt made in the USA as are many of the things I own. I would like to point out however is the fact that If I could find more made in the USA products that I would buy them! The problem here is the tools I buy are "the last straw in my hat" so to speak and I just cant succumb to buying tools made elsewhare!

Try something new this year for Christmas! I did it a few years ago. Refuse anygift not made in the USA and see what you end up with.

I am glad to see others concerned about working American families. Sometimes I feel like I'm all alone in my quest to buy American. We know we can't trust our government to do what is right and we can't trust big business either so it does only leave us, the consumer. If more of us try to buy American eventually companies will be forced to produce more products in the USA. Most people don't seem to realize they are effectively acting as terrorists when they buy forign products. They may not intend to destroy America, but that is what they are doing. I truely thank all of you who try to buy American. You are the true patriots.

So by your using a computer or other device that was made at least partially overseas to post this, you have admitted that you are a terrorist? While I support buying American made products, you have crossed the line when you call people terrorists for making other choices.

Craftsman tools are produced by over 50 manufacturers depending on the product. The principle hand tools for many years were produced by Danaher corporation. Danaher filed for bankruptcy last year and was bought out by APEX corporation which is the entity responsible for sending the production overseas. The Danaher branch of APEX also produces Armstrong, Gearwrench, Allen, and K-D tools.
