I am a former PMT associate, now known as a Backroom Associate, and this ratchet kit number sounded very familiar. So I got on Ebay to see that ratchet, and yes those kits do exist and your local store should be able to rebuild it (assuming they have the kit in stock).

BigMike has a good point about the tool warranty being performed by those responsible. The tool company might be dirty and start to exploit people who want to hang on to the made in USA tool by putting them in the position of paying the bill or accept a foreign made replacement. Why did I pay the price for a warranty that cannot be performed. The subject to change at our descretion thing the manufacturer has can get disturbing.

Bill
With a ratchet that old, I would take it apart and clean it with thinner or mineral spirits, many times the teeth around the hub get dirt and grime in them and don't let the lock unit settle in all the way. After the cleaning; use light machine oil to lubricate. I do all my ratchets every year, cleaning them in a parts washer allows fines to enter the assembly

I understand that Bill. I have tools that old, or even older. My issue is that Sears is expecting you to accept a rebuilt replacement, or have you pay to have your tool (purchase with a lifetime warranty) repaired.

If you could bring your tools in and have them rebuilt while you wait, that would be one thing, but Sears is only interested in making it easy for themselves, and seems to no longer care about the customer

BigMike--

If it was a tool I bought yesterday, I, too, would just swap it out. No problem. But, I have had this ratchet for something like FORTY YEARS! I'm now officially old, I guess. :)

It is a real shame that a customer who wants their own tool rebuilt is told by the company representatives to BUY a rebuild kit, rather than the company providing them under the warranty. Personally I usually would want a new tool, but having my own tool repaired would be much preferable than being forced to accept a tool that someone else may have abused.

At one point, customer service and satisfaction mattered with Craftsman, now it does not seem to be a priority

Bill, have you stopped by the store to talk to the ratchet rebuild person formerly known as the PMT? It would only take him a few minutes to rebuild yours and you can ask him to use the original lever. Its worth a shot. Otherwise you probably have a wornout C-ring, pretty simple.

Copy and past the below URL to shop for your ratchet repair kit sold by sears.com!

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/search_10153_12605?vName=Tools&keyword=ratchet+repair+kit&viewItems=25&autoRedirect=true&redirectType=CAT_REC_PRED&prop17=ratchet%20repair%20kit

When a customer is not able to get good service or answers, be it via e-mail, phone or in person contact, they are much less likely to have a positive view of the compamy, and usually wil avoid shopping there again. To tell a customer who is angry enough about the poor treatment that their choice to no longer shop at that store is "harsh" missing the true point

Expecting the customer to jump through hoops, and telling them to go to a website that is not all that easy to navigate (especially for people who are not used to computers) rather than the company employee going to the site and getting the customer the information requested is a failure of customer service.

No excuses will do, the company failed to provide the customer the service that they needed, and now has lost the customer's future business

no help from sears

Compostlady, to each their own, but I agree with Mariah - I think you're being a bit too harsh and tossing the baby out with the bath water. Email isn't really the best medium to get anything done - A call to your local store would have accomplished a lot. The associates there could have either advised you to bring the item in to get serviced and fixed, or could have directed you to the nearest parts center where they have techs and repair guys more than willing to help out.

If you called the local store to ask one of their associates how to get the laser out, I can pretty much guarantee you they were/are going to be useless. As a sales associate, you're not trained on repair / replacement of parts and pieces. But - They could definitely have steered you in the right direction. I'm sorry again for the bad part, and the poor email-return service, but I wouldn't immediately kick the company yet.

No, I do not think I was being too harsh. I would be happy to purchase a new laser if we could get the old one out. The only way we did get it out was to snip the wires! Now we will use the saw without the laser. But I am done with Sears.
