Cold and flu season is officially here, and there has been a lot of talk recently about this year's flu season, especially the H1N1 (swine flu) virus. Here are a few tips to avoid getting sick this season:
- Keep your hands away from your face! Since we can not physically see viruses you may have unknowingly touched an infected surface and sticking your fingers in or on your mouth, nose, eyes or ears is a great way to get sick.
- Wash, wash, wash your hands with hot water and soap. If soap and water aren't available use an alcohol based hand rub. To be most effective, hand sanitizer should have at the very least 60% alcohol and it should take you at least 20 seconds to rub it into your skin. If your skin is dry after less than 20 seconds you did not use enough.
- Try to avoid contact with people who are already sick.
If you do get sick, here are some tips to follow to recover quickly and keep others from getting sick:
- If you need to cough or sneeze cover your mouth with your arm instead of your hand. If you do cough or sneeze into your hand wash your hands immediately with soap and hot water or use an alcohol based hand rub.
- Clean surfaces in your home or at the office with rubbing alcohol or sanitizing wipes, like these Clorox Disinfecting Wipes.
- Load up on over the counter cold medicine such as DayQuil / Nyquil or Tylenol Cold, in case you are sick and forced to stay home.
- If you begin to have severe flu like symptoms head to your doctor. They will be able to provide you with the best course of action.
