Change Layaway to include Televisions

Idea_tail_up posted on May 14, 2009 at 08:11AM to Pricing & Policies

With the change to Digital TV set for June 12, there will be a lot of households that can't afford to go out and pay up front for a new TV. You have layaway's now but you do not include electronics.

If someone can't afford a new tv, they can always get a digital converter box and use a $40 coupon from the federal government to defray most of the cost. That would be far more economical and financially responsible for someone without the means to purchase a new television. A converter box is about $50-60, and a $40 coupon makes it $10-20, versus $200 for the very smallest television. Sometimes we have to weigh our wants versus our needs.

Also, there isn't that much margin in televisions, so retailers don't have oodles and oodles of televisions in stock. They buy what they think they need, and go from there. Therefore, if televisions were on layaway, stores would have a bunch of televisions held in the back for customers that might finish paying for them and not have televisions for people who will outright pay for them.

Not only is there not much margin, but often there's NO margin! That means the store makes nothing out of selling the television. This was especially evident last year, when televisions kept dropping in price. Sears lost literally tens of millions because of price decreases by manufacturers dropping the prices below their initial cost.

Sears in Macon, Ga needs a lay-away department. As for the K-mart in Macon, Ga please have longer hours in layaway. People are just getting off work when the layaway department closes. Maybe close layaway 30 minutes before store closing. Also please have clearance items go on layaway.
