Inappropriate?

MikeyRocks gave me a good idea.  Lets say something is out of stock in the store and we offer to order them off the In-Store Kiosk for free shipping straight to their house.  A lot of people do not have time to wait (especially for our less then prompt computer system).  We could give them an access code to look and puchase at home at there leisure for free shipping.

I dont see why, if it was a one-time use that you put in the coupon area of the checkout screen. Maybe they have to be verified by the manager first. Or something.

But if you give that code to someone, it's now available to everyone everywhere (there's this thing called the interwebs...). Suddenly, everyone has free shipping for everything all the time.

When an item is out of stock, it is good customer service to offer options on how to get the product. I wanted an item at Linens 'N Things which was out of stock at the store I was visiting. They checked which store had it in stock, called them, and we completed the order over the phone. It was shipped free to my home. They got a sale that would not have otherwise taken place, and they had a very happy customer.
