Wii's during the holidays are in short supply just about anywhere.
Also, for the people that only have a "B" size store to shop at, many times there are no gaming systems whatsoever.
To sell Iphones Sears would have to have a contract with AT&T/Apple and possibly have a booth program within stores ... I don't see that happening.
Sears does do a decent job on picking up on trends and capitalizing on them when they are in reach and economically feasible to promote.
Yes, regarding the Wii: It's all a new marketing scheme by Nintendo. The old game console cycle went: console released in huge quantities, initial game library released at same time, new games introduced over the next 6 months, console sales end as customers anticipate new console, game sales drop off, 3 months of zero sales, then new release. The new system goes like this: console released in low quantities, initial game library released at same time, new games introduced over next 2 years as console is slowly fed to market, keeping console demand high and game purchases steady, release new console without traditional dead period, maintain profit per console at same level as at release for much longer, and sell far more games, netting far higher profits for far more time, which looks better to investors and increases the share price. Is it a consumer-unfriendly system? Yes, but as long as people eagerly pay $400 for a new Wii, Nintendo will continue to milk the system.
iPhone's would require a contract with Sears and open up a whole host of other issues. To carry iPhone would require Sears to add training to their associates, and if you carry the iPhone why not other cell phone plans on AT&T.
Wii, is in short stock EVERWHERE!! Around Christmas, daily 5-15 customers would approach us and ask if we had any Wii's.... We would get 3 units in stock every 2-3 weeks.
Sears isn't stupid, they make an honest attempt at stocking things that are popular... but often times vendors and other unforeseeable issues come up.
