Sears Hometown Shop Talk New Store Openings

This is an exciting time of year for Hometown Stores. Not only are we on the verge of the holiday selling season, but this is when new store openings hit a frenzied pace. Not sure why it happens, but every year we peak around now. If all goes according to plan, we will open an average of two stores a week from here until the end of the year. The challenges abound, but getting stores open on time and under budget is what our New Store Team does best. We know each one is special and unique to the owner and their community and we treat it that way. Despite having been involved with hundreds of store openings, the excitement, the anticipation, the anxiety...and the sound of the register ringing...is still a thrill! (Those whove been there know what Im talking about.)

WorkingHAS part time at Sears in Brockton, MA during high school, it would have been hard to envision where my career would take me or how the company would evolve. Ive had the good fortune to work with incredibly talented people and live in some great places (Ive got to tell you, Chicago is nice, but it doesnt compare to Newport, RI or Hyannis, MA).  For the last 16 years, Ive been involved in business development, having worked with Homelife Furniture, The Great Indoors, and Sears Home Appliance Showrooms. But growing Hometown Stores has proved to be the most exciting. With over 200 new stores opened in the last four years...obviously this is a winning format!

One thing that sets this business apart is the way we operate. The organization is lean and empowered. Team members are talented and accountable. We measure results in days- not weeks or months. New ideas are welcomed (actually required) and processes regularly reviewed and amended...change is a constant. All of this allows us to move, adapt and execute fast while ensuring a high degree of quality and consistency. When combined with the energy and enthusiasm of our owners, it doesnt get any better for people who thrive on this sort of stuff.

If youre able and can spare the time, please support locally owned and operated Sears stores.

I have to tell you as a significant Sears shareholder and customer that I'm really thrilled with what the Hometown Team is doing. If we could get corp stores 1/2 to the level to eh HT stores are, Sears SSS comps would be pointing in the other direction.

Hi J, You're definitely well versed in Sears speak. :) We're bullish about store openings even in today's economic climate. Really appreciate your enthusiasm and energy. We look forward to comments since we are blogging daily. Do you follow any blogs? Best, Shaunak

I follow these blogs quite a bit as well as the discussions on Twitter, Facebook and MySears. One of the things Sears needs to do more of is leverage the Internet across all the channels. For example, these blogs are great, fantastic actually. The problem is no readers. Solution: Integrate them with the Facebook fan pages. People will go nuts and you'll be able to fight your image battle in the online trenches where it's being fought. Today, people leave negative comments on the Facebook page that go unanswered, except occasionally by me for days if not weeks. Simple, cheap and easy wins to be had by having one of the online folks from MySears login there 3x a day and respond. Kohls has started doing this on their Facebook page because of the huge backlash they got from pulling free shipping from the MVC card holders....btw - Sears should be jumping right on that by saying Hey Kohls shoppers, come join Sears and get the free shipping you deserve! But you guys need to integrate the efforts so that all the reviews, specials, blogs are viewable across all the internet properties...not silos. I've got plenty of ideas on this and other fronts, but I'm sure you get your fill, so I won't add to it.

Hey J, All great comments and suggestions. We are definitely coordinating efforts internally here through meetings (of course) but also through some pretty nice automated tools. Not sure who here jumped on the free shipping, but we're doing a lot to promote Sears capabilities on social sites and back to our own sites. Love your ideas, so keep 'em coming. We're trying to steer the Sears ship in the right direction.
