Frogmother1 says "Counter Depth is worth the extra cost!" about Samsung Counter Depth Side by Side

We remodeled out kitchen in May 2011 (about 5 months ago) and purchased all new appliances (at Sears, I might add). Our kitchen designer steered us to purchase a counter-depth refrigerator. I am so glad I listened to her. This refrigerator fits well with our decor and provides ample room for our family of 5. I love the water and ice on the door, the bottom freezer, and the adjustability of the fridge shelves.

Although there are less expensive options, we have never regretted purchasing this product. It is quiet and performs well. In addition, we actually see the energy savings in our electric bill!

This has been a great purchase!...

We have now received FOUR units in a row of the same model (KSCS25FV, the KitchenAid-badged version of these refrigerators) over the past 15 months or so and the problems --all, admittedly by Whirlpool, being manufacturing defects-- have uncovered a wide range of problems with this product. As I've explained to Whirlpool, this is an excellent example of quality control from four random pulls of the exact same product over a 15-month period, so I hope I can at least raise awareness about this company's product.

These issues included a warped cabinet/door with fridge door protruding beyond freezer door at the bottom and wouldn’t seal; a unit that leaked an extensive amount of water on our kitchen's new hardwood floors that came from inside the refrigerator (not the water line or dispenser) and was a mystery that was never solved but caused severe floor damage; one had a broken compressor that made squealing/whistling noises on delivery but took months of service calls to diagnose...
...

I purchased this refrigerator because it was counter depth and fit into my existing space. I was replacing a 25 year old side/by/side with water and ice in the door so I had certain requirements I wanted to replace…..one being water AND ice, both cubes and crushed, in the door dispenser. All our normal glasses easily fit into the dispenser. I love the design of the interior; everything stores easily and can be found quickly. Door shelves accommodate large size containers. Love the contained ice compartment. Party trays can be stored in the large tray. Freezer opens easily and has large storage bins with an upper slide out tray for smaller items. It’s much easier to store and find things in this bottom freezer than my old side/by/side. My only disappointment is the counter depth does not come with the tilt out basket tray on the freezer door which is a great feature for juice cans. This is both a classy and practical refrigerator and well worth the money.
...

I replaced a GE profile counter depth frig with this model from Sears and I couldn't be happier! The capacity is amazing because of the nu,ber of shelves and bins (freezer). The ice dispenser is a bit loud, but nothing that I can't live with. I would recomend this frig to anyone looking for sleek styling and practical storage.
...

Not only does the ice end up all over the floor, so does the water when you use the dispenser. The design is very flawed! When you remove your glass from either dispenser, it keeps on dispensing. I had the Sears technician here and he said it's the way it's designed. The levers point outwards and the ice and water will continue to pour on you once your glass is removed. Mine is stainless steel, so there are always water marks all over the fridge. I cannot believe that the "Elite" series has such a flaw. I wouldn't buy it again.
...

We purchased this model after considerable research into counter-depth models. We have owned this refrigerator for 18 months and are frustrated daily by what seems to be a design flaw with the ice tray in the freezer section. Each time the slide out drawer is pulled to get ice cubes, 5-10 ice cubes fall out into the bottom of the refrigerator casing or onto the kitchen floor (great fun for the cats and toddler, but not so much for us). The wire mechanism to gauge the level of ice in the bin actually seems to catch the ice cubes and pull them out rather than sliding over them as the drawer is pulled. The counter depth "look" was one we were after, particularly with gray sides to the refrigerator cabnet which is very hard to find. However, the stainless doors have several dents simply from opening the doors which then bump the adjacent cabnets. The stainless, in addition to being very delicate, is also much more susceptible to smudges and finger prints than any of our other...
...

We were looking for a counter-depth refrigerator with water and ice through the door in a bottom freezer layout. This is a tough set of requirements, particularly when you are talking about a counter-depth layout. With the fresh food compartment behind the french doors, there is only one way to get ice through one of the doors and that is to include a standalone frozen compartment with icemaker and storage either in the door or in the fresh food compartment itself. Just about any way you look at it you are going to have to give up space. Luckily, we are in a position to have a second refrigerator in our garage for overflow and beverage storage, so we felt pretty good about going ahead and getting exactly what we wanted for the kitchen. Exactly what we wanted was the LG LMX21981ST. Or I should say, exactly what my wife wanted, which is pretty much the same thing when it comes to things in the kitchen. Anyway, this fridge has been perfect. We bought it from Sears, got a great deal on it,...
...

Have had the Samsung side by side counter depth refrig for one month and it looks and works great. Satin finish takes care of annoying problem with stainless model and showing finger prints. Inside lightening is amazing...it's fun to open the refrig. Really like the counter depth although the fresh food drawers not opening very far is taking time to get used to. Storage space in door is nice, upper door can easily hold gallons of milk, large juice/gatorade bottles. Ice maker was slow getting started (just as I read on other reviews) but if your patient and let it fill up it works great. Occastionally hear the ice drop but other than than, this is a very quiet unit. Great buy, excellent choice.
...

Kenmore model # 5815 800 side by side refrigerator. When I bought it the produce draws were taped shut. Remove the tape in the store and try them. They are hard to slide. The ice maker quit after 6 months . They told me to change the water filter ($50 each) which didn't fix it. It also started leaking water out of the back of the fridge which stained our wood floor and got our carpet wet in a adjoining room. It's been a month and a visit by a Sears service tech. (2 weeks to get him out) and waiting on repair parts. If you are thinking of buying this model I'll make you a good deal on this one.
...

We've had this unit a little less than a year and have had nothing but problems with the ice-through-the-door feature. The unit either grinds and grinds, and we never get ice, or it comes out with such force that it hits the bottom of the glass and lands on the floor. The Sears service person I spoke with on the phone said "this is normal".

We finally begged and got a technician out to the house. He replaced the unit about 3 months ago, and tonight, when I put a glass to ice, I literally got about half of the ice in the bin. I cannot begin to put into words how disappointed I am with this thing.

I used to consider Sears "the place" to get appliances, but I doubt if they will ever sell me another one.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS REFRIGERATOR!!...

We've only had this refrigerator 2 months and our milk started to sour rather quickly. We had the setting on 5 which is in the middle. We put a thermometer in it and it was at 49 degrees (should be between 37 degrees). We put it up to 6 and it went to 47 degrees. We put it at the coldest setting 9 and the coldest it got was 43.5 degrees. We have called sears to schedule a service call. Since it is under a year, it is free. Hopefully they can fix, but not to optimistic with the other reviews. We should have read reviews first, but needed a smaller fridge to fit our cabinets. I would try something different....

We purchased this fridge when we moved into a new house. The first thing that we noticed when we plugged it in was a strange noise it makes when the fan kicks in. Next the shelves in the door all cracked when we snapped them into place for the first time. You cannot keep the milk in the large door compartment which we usually like to do becouse it WILL spoil. We also have a problem with getting the freezer and fridge door to line up correctly beside each other. We had maytag and never had any problems with them. My future appliance purchases will be Maytag again. VERY VERY unsatisfied....
