This Kenmore electric water heater power miser 6, model 153.326463, replaced a Power Miser 8 installed in 1983. After having a bad experience with a Craftsman leaf blower my faith in Sears is restored. Reading reviews is a good thing. What is great about this installation is that the master plumber who hooked it up had inadvertently wired the unit wrong, consequently it did not heat water. I was discouraged and called Sears to see what could be done. The repair person I spoke to asked several questions. He asked what color wires were hooked to what. I had watched the plumber hook them up so I knew. Without a doubt he said the wires were connected improperly. I turned off the unit at the fuse box and connected the wires the repair person said. Also I checked the reference manual and this corrected the problem. Like I said the last heater a Power Miser 8 lasted since 1983, 26 years, without even the anode being replaced. When buying appliances I will see Sears first and see Sears last........
...

This is about the Sears 55 Water heater. I bought my home in 1980 and the water heater was there then. 30 years is a long time to have a water heater in place. I have enjoy hot water always, even when running more than one appliance( dish washer, washing machine).

i know someday soon i may have to replace this older model with a new one. when that times comes i intend to purchase from Sears another 55 model as it served me for this long i would hope the new one will do as well. Sorry Sears but you made this model i have without putting in the planned obsolesence.
...

JDC says "Beware Your warranty may be useless" about Kenmore Power Miser 9, 40 Gallon, Electric Water Heater

I have a Kenmore Power Miser 9. Model # 153.32946 Serial # G04136386. I purchased the original unit in Nov. of 2003. I replaced it due to leaking in Jan 2005. In 2005, Sears was superb in honoring the warranty. Today the unit I have started leaking. I called the retail store I have frequented first and was told I need to call the "water hot line" 1-800-469-4663. I did and got another number to call. I then called the service # 1-800-251-5630. I was told that it will cost me $75 to have someone come out to tell me it is leaking. (MMMM I think I know that due to the water all over the floor) Then they tell me the technician can only come 9 days from now. You tell me if this is an honorable practise of servicing a warranty. I told the individual on the phone that this was unacceptable. I asked to speak with his manager. After several minutes of waiting he came back on and said he tried to get the service tech to do an emergency call. Since the tech had gone home already, I need to call tomorrow...
...

smfoil4 says "HORRIBLE PRODUCT-HORRIBLE SERVICE-WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT!" about KENMORE POWER MISER 6

We purchased the Kenmore Power Miser 6 water heater in 2007...by mid 2008 we began to have problems with the pilot light going out. When this happened, water would also leak from the pressure relief valve all over the floor. This persisted for the next several months. So several cold showers later, I called the service center and they of course wanted to charge me for the visit, labor, and parts on an appliance that I just paid for!

When I started doing a little investigation, I realized that there were many others that have had the SAME PROBLEM with this product that we have that I couldn't even read ALL OF THE BAD REVIEWS! And that was just on the SEARS website alone! I officially have talked to over 10 persons from dept. to dept. (water heater service line, National Customer Service Center, Kenmore division, One-Source, and a few more I am unsure who they were) re: this issue, including one manager named Josh that offered NO HELP or referral at all and eventually hung up on me!
Rosie70412 says "don't waste your time or money" about Kenmore Power Miser 9, 40 gal. Gas Water Heater

After having to take cold showers and relight the pilot 10 times a day to get hot water, I finally gave up. Sears service is worthless, so know that before you buy. I called my friend who is a heating guy and he came to look at it. He replaced the thermocoupler way cheaper than Sears and it still kept having the same problem. I got online and did research and found that everyone who has this junk is having the same issues. After reading numerous articles online from other owners, I tried the steel wool first, and cleaned the screen. that worked for a couple of months, and back to the same again. I got mad and decided to break the glass from the access panel out, and no more problems.

What I can say for sure is that In my home now, there are 7 appliances. I will never buy Kenmore anything ever again. I replaced the washer with the LG and love it. Home Depot backs their stuff up, and no run around at all. I would rather boil my own water than ever buy any water heater...
...

In general, the Sears legacy of service is no longer valid. The hidden installation fees are outrageous. Service engineers are not able to fix a problem that is well documented on the internet blogs - namely that the pilot light goes out and the heater has to be restarted - often more than10 times a day. ( Perhaps this is why they installed the single button restart?) This problem is common and seems to occur with greater frequency when the weather is warm than when it is cold.

The basic problem is that the flame gets starved for oxygen. One needs to let more air in, while preventing flashback. The ceramic combination flashback arrestor / vent is inadequate.

Many people have tried keeping the ceramic vent clean. This is a nightmare to accomplish. A service representative wanted to charge my girlfriend $50 to clean it once, and $75 to have him show her how to do it. One needs to disconnect the gas supply to clean the vent. Many people have replaced the thermocouple several times - with...
...

The Kenmore brand of gas water heaters are junk. Yes, easy to install and quick to operate, but give them one to two years and they all have a common problem of not staying lit. I have this problem now with my heater and we are one week with cold showers. and waiting for the pilot assembly to arive. Can't find the part anywhere but online. The Sears part and repair centers don't even stock the part in Arizona. Sears has discontiniued the tech support over the phone and now they just want to send out a technition who isn't even a Sears employee and they will tell you that the part needs to be ordered. Bottom line....customer support dieing, product quality poor and getting worse.......buy from Home Depot and get customer service and better quality....

Hondaddy says "Power Miser 12 is unreliable at 2 years old, pilot goes out." about Kenmore Power Miser 12, 40 Gallon, ENERGY STAR, Natural Gas Water Heater

I had written a review here, the old sears site, only to have it removed. It seemed that Sears didn't want anyone to know about the inherent problems and how to fix them yourself and circumvent their repair service.

At about two years old my Power Miser 12 had to be re lit 2 or 3 times a day. Sears customer service was no help. All they wanted to do was charge me for a service tech call. I am quite handy, so I disassembled the unit and tested the very few components. Everything tested fine. Still Sears wanted to send out a tech.

The pilot light would go out a few times a day. I had to set my alarm 1 hour earlier everyday to go down and relight the pilot. I searched the internet for 4 days looking for some info as to why this was happening to a unit with no faulty components. Mind you, I paid big money getting the Power Miser 12 rather than the 9 or 6. My old Power Miser 6 lasted 11 years and never had one problem until the tank started leaking. So I thought the 12 would go 20 years......
...

From a Kenmore Miser 6 after seven years to a Miser 9 water heater. Today the Miser 9 is being installed. 5/14/09 Well, after 7 years it is way to soon for a water heater to start leaking. The end result is $813.00 and this one better last longer than a hand full of years. I found out from a friend at work that there are waterless heaters available where you do not have to settle for 40 gallons of water waiting to explode in your house. I wish I would have known before I made this purchase. If you need a water heater I recommend you go waterless. Now I feel I am stuck. I do not believe Sears offers waterless water heaters.
...
