LDD says "It is GREAT...and bad...all in the same unit." about Kenmore Elite 1.4 cu. ft. Speedcook Microwave Hood Combination w/ Advantium 120 Technology

I must echo every sentiment previously written here--both the good and the bad. This is the greatest multi-function kitchen appliance--when it works. It is used daily as a microwave, several times a week as a speedcook oven, and occasionally as convection (our other wall ovens do that, too, so the convection feature hasn't been used much). It microwaves properly, and the speedcook function is a lifesaver for time, as well as to keep from heating up a regular oven on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, this appliance also has reliablility issues.

This unit hasn't been abused--in fact, it has been babied, especially after the initial circuit board crash only two months after installation. Like others, ours has needed regular costly repairs--circuit boards twice, lightbulbs, loose handles, etc. Warranty covered the first circuit board, but not the second.

Based on the cost and original marketing materials, I expected more from this appliance. When it works, it delivers; when it dies--and it will...
...

Do not buy this mircowave. Whoever designed the interior light should be dragged out into the street and shot. You have to replace a $300 part instead of just replacing a lightbulb when the inside bulb goes out. It eats the outside (bottom) halogen lights and now the fan won't turn on. The door is sloppy is the only way I can describe it and for around a grand the build quality is embarassing. The exhaust fan is also very weak.
...

It's a great microwave oven with lots of capacity as long as you bother you go through the manual once. Even if you don't though, the usual modes are easy to figure out and in many cases it can replace the regular oven. My only problem has been the inside light that went out a year after the purchase and I have been unable to replace it. Other than that it's a highly recommended purchase.
...

If you want super-duper quality, features, and durability, then spend more money. If you want to warm up your coffee, make popcorn, nuke frozen veggies, and thaw corn dogs, then this will get the jobs done. Nothing fancy, like convection or sensors, or 5 step defrost menus, which makes this perfect for my 60 year old parents. Also, large buttons and a sturdy handle. Only a moderate up charge for stainless (what a racket!), but it is necessary to keep the kitchen up to date in this housing market. Looks great with the Kenmore stainless range. Easy for my wife and I to install in a few hours. Would have been faster, but the cordless drill battery is never charged when I need it! Now I need to find an old time bread box for the bread, muffins, and donuts that they store in their old countertop microwave......or not. LOL
...

When we purchased this microwave we could not decide between this microwave and the Advantium. We chose the Kenmore Elite because the touch pad looked easier for the kids to use. We loved it at first then the handle broke, which was impossible to replace, and then the oven itself stopped working, Because we loved it when it worked we foolishly bought another one, thinking the first one we had was an isolated problem. Well of couse after about 2 years the same thing. The handle broke and then the oven just stopped working. I had also recommended the oven to my mother and her handle also broke, though the oven is still working. This oven is too expensive to replace every two years. When it worked we loved it, but unfortunately it doesn't work. We hoped for better....

Love the features of this microwave but after less than three years of moderate usage the turntable quit...this was an expensive microwave and a real splurge for our family, but it will cost more to repair than to replace with a lesser model. I picked this for the stainless interior and oversized turntable--the irony is that the turntable doesn't work anymore. Microwave has only been used for typical purposes (reheating and minor cooking) and has been extremely well maintained; we've done nothing to cause it to just quit working. This is the last big money I'll spend on a Kenmore elite product, unfortunately....
