I had VHS and 8mm and HI8's. I thought that it was time for a tech upgrade again and I usually buy low end and have good luck doing so. The first thing my wife noticed was that the colors were off. She said it looked like an old time movie. The were very muted. Picture quality is dreadful compared to my 8mm. I see digital lines when there is motion on any recording level. lines of resolution is suppose to be about the same or more than my HI8 but i dont see it. I dont think I can trust this to record out family moments. I am used to having 2 hours recording time on the tapes so this 20-30 minute recording time is for the birds. I really liked the idea of having the video straight to DVD, but from what i have been reading the dvds will only last about 5 years so you need to back up your video. Not sure to what. I am pretty sure the my 8mm/Hi8's have lasted longer than that. I have VHS that are over 20 years old. I have to see what sears return...... We had read many reviews and spoke with the salesman in detail about the item. Yet were very disappointed. The lens always has to be manually opened, it takes a long time to boot up, and always reads that you should use a sony disc, making it even a longer time to boot up. It does not seem to be able to stay focused. The color was grey and washed out. When we returned it the person who inspected it to let us know if it was a defective camera told us that it is the nature of the beast. You are trading convience (of the dvd) for the quality. It also did not stop recording instantly and there was no option to fade out like our sony that uses tapes. We love that camcorder!!!!... This one is so much easier to use, lighter to carry, and I love that all I have to do to watch what I've taped is to take the DVD out and put it in my DVD player...nothing special to do as with my old one. It's very easy to use although I still have a lot to learn, I pretty much just took it out of the box and started taping! The only feature I don't really like is the touch screen and getting used to that will come with time and using it more, I'm sure! A great value for the price and I ordered mine online and never even left the comfort of my home! With four granddaughters I'm very pleased to have a camcorder I can practically stick in my purse and go tape them in action!!!...
