kbmaynard says "16 " elect chain saw - - good but disappointing. See Review." about Craftsman 3.5 hp 16&#34 Electric Chain Saw

I bought a 16" Craftsman elect chain saw in 2008. Liked it a lot. But, something broke inside after cutting only 9 or 10 cords of wood in 4 years. Found it would cost more to have your Service Dept repair it that the cost of new one. So, bought another 16" Craftsman.

Really disappointed !!! It is inferior to 2008 model - - oil fill and visibility of oil level, balance, handle, switch is awkward & unsafe, cord short, poor brake, too large overall. But, biggest disappointment is that the good chain bar from the 2008 won't fit this one when I need a new one. Worse, the 3 chains I bought for the 2008 are a different Part # so I can't reuse them. Big hit on what I thought was a lifetime investment for a retiree. It really doesn't deserve the CRAFTSMAN name.
...

Start with the good things it starts very easily, has a nice carrying case and a long bar. Negative is it is always dripping bar oil and uses a lot of gas and the chain is always coming off. Its has a nice easy way to tighten the chain but that is where its downfall is because this method just doesn't work the way that it should. Always falling off all of the time after just using for about 10 minutes. Oh and it is competitively priced for the money.
...

My father-in-law bought this chainsaw for me as a gift. Excited about it, I came here, read the reviews and left it in the box for fear of losing a major body part!

Now, I've never used anything more than a little electric chainsaw and the claims here were enough to commit me to about six weeks of cutting wood with a bow saw. I finally decided to give the saw a try (too much work sawing by hand) and . . .

Yes, as a complete novice THE FIRST TIME I used this saw the chain came off about once every 5 minutes. It WAS a pain - but because it was still better than hand sawing I gave it a second try -

I've now used the saw at least 20 times and the chain has not come off again, *not even one time*. The chain is super-easy to tighten up (I keep a screwdriver in the carry case and tighten maybe every 20 minutes of usage, takes less than 1 minute plus it's a nice excuse for a break). The problems I had initially were things I learned NOT to do - ie, operater inexperience and...
...

I needed a chainsaw to clear out fallen trees from damming the creek behind my house and this fits the bill perfectly.

Out of Box Experience:

The box contained the saw engine, bar, chain, and 2 stroke oil. It took about 5 minutes to assemble the saw. Put bar oil in the black cap reservoir and gas/oil mix in the red capped one.

I have read other reviews about the adjustment mechanism being hard to figure out. I am not sure what the problems they have had are, but this is how saws with screw type chain tension adjustment have worked since the 1970's.

First Start:

I pumped the primer until it filled with gas and three more times after that. I pulled the choke out and pulled the starter. It fired immediately and ran kind of rough. I blipped the throttle to drop the choke to the middle setting. The engine ran very smooth and I let it idle for 20 – 30 seconds to warm up. I pushed the choke in the rest of the way and the idle maintained just fine.

Pulling in the throttle was...
...

I bought this saw because I wanted an 18 inch chain saw. The first time I used it for some small stuff I noticed it was lacking power but didn't know how bad it was until I helped my buddy buck up a small oak tree. The chain would actually stop, so I called husqvarna and they told me the 240 is recommended with a 14-16 inch bar and the manual said the same. So I had to spend $50 to purchase a smaller bar and chain. And also found out sears orders them with an 18 inch bar so they will sell better... Next time I will buy a stihl!!...

I got this bluemax when the earthqake hit. I had to buy a new saw becuse my old one did not work. I needed something quick so I went online. I am person who looks for a bargain. I like trying new things that comes out. This saw was awesome. I had a 100 year old oak tree that came down from the quake. If this saw was as good as advertised, I thought this will be a good chance to find out. My buddy and i started on this tree.I did not relise how big it was till we started.I thought i bought too small of a saw.But i was wrong because it comes with two blades & two chains 14" & 20". I used the 14" on the smaller stuff and the 20" on the trunk and the power was great and smooth. We took 27 pick up trucks of wood from this tree.It seemed to run for ever on the an oil. My buddy had his saw and wanted to try mine.He said that it looked like mine was doing a better and faster job .So he tried it and was amazed. It took us three weeks to remove this tree.

So I recieved this saw a few days ago and used it one day. I have absolutely no complaints. Saw needed the bar and chain put on out of the box. Filled with bar and chain oil and that was it. Used all afternoon with 150' of 12 guage extension cord. Motor got hot at times but never had any problems overheating.

I cut down 10 20' trees with ease. There couldn't have been a better tool for the job. Only time chain came off is when I nicked a wire fence. Put it back on and kept on working. I was surprised with the amount of power I could get from a relatively inexpensive chain saw. Some may complain its a bit heavy, but I would rather have some more weight to help with the cut, and more weight usually means better quality parts. This thing paid itself off in one day. Hope it lasts for many more.
...

This saw had good power. It cuts really well. I purchased this saw because of the longer bar length. The saw I purchased seemed to need the oil filled up after four or five cuts. It was going through a great deal of oil for the cutting I was doing. After I used it the second time, the auto oiler went out and it used NO oil at all thus causing the chain to get hot. All in all got about 5 hours use out of it. Took it back and got refund. I would prefer a manual oiler like the Remingtion 14" which is a workhorse for the money.

Get the extended warranty if you buy this chainsaw--because it most likely will break down. Wanted to replace with the same model of saw, but I don't think the auto oiler is up to par or designed to last for too long.
...
