The locking washer mechanism on the height adjustment quickly wears out and allows the brushes to raise up - ergo picks up nothing since you are brushing air. I have tightened the adjustment and it keeps slipping. I have to get off the mower and reset it - good for abou 3-5 minutes before I have to stop and start again. Sears needs a better mechnism to lock-in the height - I see that on other models but not this one - a $300 investment in this product. I will be trucking down to the Home Depot to see what other locking mechanism I can use to lock the washers in place....

alexsbuddy says "First Timer User of a Lawn Sweeper-WOW!" about Craftsman 42&#34 High Speed Sweeper

This is the first time I have owned or used a lawn sweeper. I have numerous gumball trees in my yard (beautiful but extremely messy due to the gumballs) and use my Craftsman lawn tractor with bagger to mow up the leaves. However, a lawn tractor is not able to pick up the heavy gumballs and so I have always had to do it the hard way...raking, raking, and more raking. Not unusual to rake up 20 to 30 extra-large lawn bags of gumballs each season. Decided to give the sweeper a try and did lots of research before deciding on this one. Wow.....it really did a great job. Spent less than a couple hours doing a job that used to take 10 or 12 hours and left me sore for a week. Only problem that I had was the wheels locked up a couple of times (as mentioned in some other posts) but I am not sure if that was due to my inexperience with setting the height and/or driving too slow while trying to learn how it operated. Problem went away when I adjusted the height and learned which speed was most efficient...
...

CarleneJ says "I love the Lawn Sweeper" about Ohio Steel 50 Inch Lawn Sweeper

Well I do have a love hate relationship with this lawn sweeper. It was difficult for me to put together, but I am not technical. The 1st few times I could not figure out why the wheels locked up. I would be going along hearing all the debris going into the hopper, then the wheels locked up. I finally figured out to make it higher if there is a lot of debris. I got it mostly for pine cones, leaves & pine straw. One day I lowered it to pick up acorns. I was so happy hearing the acorns hit the hopper & the yard was looking beautiful, but then the wheels locked. It had gotten too heavy to move. I should have emptied it very frequently with the acorns. I ended up having to shovel out the acorns, which took as much time as just raking them. I just dump the debris in a burn pile & burn it. Sometimes the wheels lock & I have to disconnect the sweeper, turn it on it's side & get the tangled pine straw out. Overall I am very happy with this lawn sweeper & wish I had gotten one earlier.
...

Would buy it again. Instructions aren't to hard to follow, but they could be a little more definitive in certain areas. I have a yard full of various assortments of trees/leaves and the lawn sweeper picked up almost all of them without me even having to use a rake. In some areas where the leaves are really deep and wet, the tires would lock-up and slide, but that should be expected to happen. I have always used a yard-vac in the past, but the leaves don't burn very well after they are mulched up, which is why the lawn sweeper is so much better. Plus, the lawn-vac was annoying because you had to find a place to dump all of the mulched leaves and you also had to break your back doing it. Overall, the lawn sweeper isn't flawless, but this was the easiest year of picking up leaves out of the past 8 that I have been doing it.
...

I chose the Pro version of the carftsman sweeper because my yard is craggy and uneven. I drive a lawn tractor ithe a 54" deck on 2 acres of lawn sprinkled with mature trees. I have a lot of sticks and small rocks so I wanted something really sturdy that I didn't have to baby. I'm not good at maintenance or neccessarily following directions so I worried that it would be hard to put togethere and difficult to set up to work with my mower....it WASN'T. It only took me about 20 minutes to put together and hitch up and I was soon sweeping like a demon! This sweeper picked up EVERYTHING - small rocks, sticks and lots of leaves. Even when I hit areas of my lawn that were a bit damp...it pulled up wet leaves and clumps just as well. I am really happy with it. The only diffisulty I had was the 2 flimsy rod supports that are in the back of the bag support frame - they kept falling out. I used it all day without them and then made my own out of wooden dowel rods, slightly longer, but they......

I bought this sweeper last year and about the third use one of the tires fell off and now I have to use a rubber mallet to put it back on. The bag is very low quality. The corners wear quickly and tear. I have not been able to use the sweeper this year, because one of the wheels keeps locking up. Not up to the standards that I had come to expect from Craftsman products. If you are consider one of these look the other way and run. I would have given it 0 stars if it had been an option.
...

Fieldho says "All, tow behind lawn sweeps are unable to disengage brush." about Agri-Fab Smartsweep 44&#34 Lawn Sweep

Here's a heads up to everybody that has one of these tow behind lawn sweeps. If you have a large lawn and you have to transport the debris, in the hopper, for any distance, you will notice the extra wear you submit the brush assembly to and you know how this shortens the life of the works. I have solved this by installing a second pair of 12" lawn mower tires in front of the original. Each side has a handle, reachable from the seat of my mower, that lowers and locks these second wheels into position. When engaged, these wheels carry the sweeper high enough above the ground to prevent contact, by the original wheels, with the ground, thus preventing the movement of the brush. This allows me to transport debris to the dump site quicker and with less wear on the brush assembly. I hope to release wheel assembly kits in the near future, possibly through Sears if they are interested. These will allow after market installation.
...

JTfromOH says "42" Lawn Sweeper works well" about Craftsman 42&#34 High Speed Sweeper

The lawn sweeper does a great job of picking up the leaves. We have very mature trees that dump many leaves on the yard. This product will save you much time and do a great job.

I have one suggestion for an improvement to Sears and that is to fix the height adjustment. You either need to shorten the bolt or add washers. I replaced the plastic twisted tightener with a 5/16-18 nut and it works fine....but I have to use a wrench adjust. Anyway, I had to do something because it slipped on me every time I used it.

Also the rope used to dump the leaves works well however you need to be careful that it doesn't drop into the sweeping brushes and get tangled. Find a place to hook it on the mower seat and you will be fine.

One MAJOR bonus for those that have black walnut trees or acorns, this sweeper will pick them up!!!! I was very happy to see this.

This is a very good product. With a little refinement(height adjustment and rope fix) it wil be a great product!

We have 2 1/2 acres with over a hundred TALL trees. Mostly pine along with hickory, madrone, fruit trees plus unknown. With this red craftsman sweeper it make it fun cleaning up the place. Watch out when picking up pine needles due to their heave weight which make it harder to dump hopper. The other leaf fill it up. Well worth the money.
We've owned our sweeper for a few years now. You need to know how to use and adjust the sweeper in order for it to work well. When my husband first put it together, I noticed it not working quite right so I took a closer look and noticed a problem with his assembly. Once fixed, it worked like a champ.

We have lost a few parts along the way but we're pretty hard on it as well. One thing nice about any craftsman product is the ease of getting parts.

We have a large yard (2 acres) and use it basically to sweep up acorns in the fall prior to the trees losing all their leaves and to clean the yard in the spring. It's too small for picking up all our leaves because we have a lot of trees (over 15) and are next to the woods but it does a great job of cleaning the lawn....
