Potter2000 says "The Palmgren 82081 Bench Grinder is poorly made" about Palmgren 8&#34 Bench Grinder (82081)

The Palmgren 82081 bench grinder I received was fraught with problems. The most major was that the cast iron base was badly cracked. Also, one of the cast iron wheel guards was slightly cracked. I believe that if I had tried to use the grinder, and if it vibrated, the base would have shattered - thus, it was very dangerous. I also noticed that there were missing parts. The eyeshields were missing. One of the grinding wheels was out of round. And, some of the shield supports were untapped and would not accept bolts.

My neighbor, a professional welder, commented that the cast iron should have been at least three times as thick, and he advised against even trying to repair the cracked cast iron. He also believed that the problems occurred at the time of manufacture, rather than during shipment. This suggests that there was little or no quality control.

If you purchase this bench grinder, examine it very carefully before using it.
...

SearsBuff says "Can't Go Wrong With This Grinder" about Craftsman 1/6 hp 6&#34 Bench Grinder with Lamp (21124)

As the summary mentions, you can't go wrong with this grinder. It's basically an all around home tool for everything you can throw at it. (Shovels, axes, matchetes, deburring metal, pvc, wood, copper, plastic, etc., minor shaping, drill bit sharpening, chisels, lawnmower blades, edger blades and on and on and on! You may want to spend a bit more or a lot more on a similar unit but they're all basically the same thing if you plan to use it for just the above mentioned or along those lines. Cast iron base feels solid and stable.

One thing that would have been nice is a dual lamp, although not something to add as a con, it would have just been nice. A quieter motor or some sound absorbtion on the casing would have been appreciated but still just makes it for a con. You can up for a variable speed grinder but you can get by with just judging pressure of item. Great price and Sears sales are now in full gear, but wait for a deal when picking up one if you can.
...

I am a relatively lazy tool sharpener and am not willing to spend hours sharpening my chisels and planes. Nevertheless I want good sharpening in a quick and effective process. The Work Sharp WS3000 replaced a more expensive wet wheel sharpening system and provides the desired capability in a compact and well built package. Setup is easy and accurate. Instructions are clear and result in a well sharpened tool in a minimum time. The sharpening process is not dependent on operator skill level to produce the desired edge. Changing sharpening wheels is quick. Tool heat is minimized, although some water to cool small tools is not a bad idea. Sandpaper facing is easily replaced and does not require flattening as do sharpening stones and grinding wheels.
...

DaveNO says "Bench Grinder 21162 - Hesitated to buy it... but now I love it!" about Craftsman Professional Variable Speed 8&#34 Bench Grinder (21162)

I hesitated to buy this Grinder, based on comments in some of the reviews here regarding vibration. After thinking about it for a couple of weeks, I decided to give it a try when I saw it on sale (internet only) for $137.99. I ordered it online with store-pickup, and got it the same day.

The first day I turned it on (not bolted down) and it had a noticeable vibration, even at slow speed. The next day after taking time to bolt it down (and removing/replacing the grinding stone and wire wheel in the process) the vibration seemed much much worse. Upon inspection, I found that the grinding stone now had a side-to-side shimmy (wobble) of about 1/8", even though it was firmly attached to the shaft. Not good, not good at all.

I decided that it had to be related to the fact that I had removed and replaced the grinding wheel. The solution turned out to be very simple. I unplugged the Grinder and loosened the grinding stone just enough so that I could turn the Grinder shaft by hand...
...

This thing turns about 60 RPM. The box shows a big 7 amp power. That's why I bought it, thinking it had a powerful motor. When you look closely it says .7 amp. They know if the advertise it as a 0.7 amp tool (whit a zero in front of the seven)nobody would bother to buy it. What a shame....

unhappyinmemphis says "It has more vibrations than a hula girl in fast motion, useless" about Craftsman Professional Variable Speed 8&#34 Bench Grinder (21162)

I was shocked at how bad the vibrations on this piece of equipment were when turned it on at any speed. It is totally unsatisfactory for sharpening my lathe tools or fine tools. A hula girl in her fastest part of her dance could not match the girations of this poorly made machine! I tried different wheels and still the same. It is like the guts of the machine are not tight or sealed. It is made in China and performs badly! Even the shaft is a little on the short side when you try to attach other wheels. I am taking it back as soon as I can. I have used many Craftsman tools and have been very pleased. This one was over priced in the store by $45 versus the internet price and loves to dance. But something else will grace my new craftsman grinder stand. Sad part is I do not think Sears now cares what we think! My older grinders work so much better and they are about 40 years old but worn out....

I bought this about 3-4 years ago for homeowner use. I've used it infrequently in the garage (heated) to wire brush various nuts/bolts/yard tools and sharpen lawnmower blades. It didn't get heavy use at all.

Tonight, it started making noises while using it to clean up some fasteners from our boat motor.... and it burnt out....

It seemed like a good enough unit at first but I think the bearings started going out of it over a year ago. It has always sounded like a freight train rolling through but I lived with it.

Now I'm going to look on Craigslist for something.... I can't do any worse there than at the Sears (made in china to fail prematurely but will surely make my shareholders a dividend next quarter!) tool department!

Hope you have better luck with this one than I did !!!
...

Nice lightweight sharpener for basic sharpening jobs. For very dull knives I recommend re-grinding a new edge at 22deg. or the angle of a pack of matches on its side. This will acheive a utility edge and new angle, but it will be necessary to finish up with sharpening stones for a razor sharp knife. I found the guides on the tool to be the weak point and found it better to hold the knife at my desired angle on the stone by hand. Use the water reservoir to keep the stone wet for best results....
