SHP says "great plow, but lasts about 3-4 seasons with HEAVY use" about Craftsman 14 in. High Lawn Tractor Snow Blade

Bought about 3 years ago and will be buying another one to replace it. An excellent little plow that I have abused in all types of snow / ice / snow banks. Install was straight forward on my 2004 DYT4000, 27HP ELS B&S. I added wheel weights and chains, but still need more traction so I add free weights off my 3-bin bagger support- about another 35 lbs and its adequate, but could still use more (i'm about 180lbs). Plowing all types of snow is no problem and the tractor / plow combo works excellent. I have a 220ft paved driveway and plow when the snow is about 4-5 inches deep. Itry to not let it get deeper than that or it becomes tough to plow and pushes my tractor off course under the heavy snow load. Never let it ice over or you may as well forget about plowing with this blade. Snow banks are tackled in two passes, I usually ram them full speed to move or break them up. Also, the next day, if they are melting, this will easily clear them. As someone else posted, start...
...

I read other reviews and don't know what the problem is. It only took a little over an hour of actual work. I read the owners manual, laid out all the parts and went to work. I had one that was about ten years old and it was a pain to get on and off. This one goes on and off in only minutes. It's great....

ive been using this blade for about 7 years, on my old poulan 17 hp, i didnt think it would really be durable, but let me tell you, after 7 years, its slightly bent at the part wear the pins go in, but it still is fully functional, and living in northern illinois, we face some harsh winters. ive put it to the test, ive rammed banks at near full speed, it still doesnt break. ill probably order a new one just cause its kinda hard to lift it up and down from getting alittle bent, and ill give my old one to my friend to help him out alittle. it doesnt handle ice for its life, but then again neither does my neighbors 3 cyl john deere diesel lol...

I have read all 50 reviews to date, agree with most, my experience has been good, I am on second blade, having sold first one with 12HP Sears Lawn Tractor after 10 years. My tractor now is 17HP Poulan(from Sears)for 11 years, still a little short on power. Plowed a whole lot of snow with most successes, minor isues, trying to think I had a D-8. All depths up too 23 inches, and context dry to heavy wet. If you plow wet, do it before it sets it or forget it. Many reviews mention slipping, sliding, if you encounter that, get a set of chains for the front also, YES they are available, probably have to look around. I have never in 21 years had chains come off, jack up the rear of the tractor, and put them on correctly to begin with. Make sure they are tight. Try putting in a couple of extra pounds of air in the tires when chains are on to tighten them. I have never used wheel weights, weigh around 225, so it works. I can understand problems folks encounter when trying to put blade together.......

I agree with the reviews that discuss that the assembly instructions could be improved; however, I took my time and was able to get it figured out and assembled within three hours time (after a couple of moves that I had to undo and redo). In particular, it was difficult to get the blade pivot shaft assembled and operating properly but once that was done, things went smoothly.

I use the blade with a 42" Craftsman Professional Garden Tractor and purchased wheel weights (Sears #2445) and tire chains. I have not had to use the tire chains and plan to take them back -- the tractor with the wheel weights (only) has provided sufficient traction to get the plowing job done. I plow a blacktop driveway that is approx 20 feet wide and 130 feet long with a slight curve and a constant downward slope.

I've read the reviews about some people having trouble with very deep snow but I think that one has to keep in mind the size of tractor and blade -- of course there must be limitations at some point......

lets see i'm 15 years old and found no problem putting it together. i thought the hardest part was taking the mowing deck off. ive seen all these different complaints with people saying it dosn't move snow that great but if you just take a shovel and push it over the top and get about a layer off the top it works great and if you let the sun sit on that then you don't even really need the chains or waits. over all its a great product thanks craftsman...

New house on a hill, gravel driveway. My 10hp 2 stage snowblower struggled to clear the sloping part of the driveway and kept catching rocks. I picked up the blade and chains for my 24hp tractor. It was easy to assemble/attach, I probably spent more time just staring at the instructions trying to figure out what they were showing. Those could be more clear.

Once I had it on we got a couple of 5+ inch falls. I probably spend the same amount of time clearing as with the snowblower, but I've got a cleaner drive and it's less effort. Just bundle up, throw on the Ipod and head out. Wish I would have done this sooner....

mounted the plow to my husqvarna tractor in 2 hours working alone. removal and storage and remounting next year will be easy (5 min tops).

used one time on my driveway and neighbors. loved it. easy to use and does the trick much more nicely than shoveling. you don't get a really good "down to the surface" scrape off even with shoes set at their lowest, but you don't really miss that. You can move SO much snow so fast. Mine worked without chains but i've got a flat drive. Would have been better with chains, which i've ordered.

The control handle linkage is a little loosey goosey, but in my estimation the thing is designed about as well as it can be....

Pain to assemble. Buy wheel weights and chains before you try this blade. Beats shoveling by a long ways. Blade attachments bend prettty easily if you plow any hard snow. It's worth it. Couldn't find better option for the price. Especially if you have the tractor already. Don't let it just sit in your garage over the winter....

Can you push a human with the chains and weights on the snow?
Can you push the snow with a hand shovel?
Anyway it's better to sit then to stand!!!!...

I bought the snow blade, wheel weights, and chains and attached them to a Craftsman lawn tractor. There simply isn't enough weight on the tractor to get traction. The wheels slip all the time. Plus we have a slightly sloping driveway and it simply doesn't work at all. When I called Sears, one of the associates told me that was his experience too and that the blade was only effective on a heavier garden tractor. So save yourself the trouble and just get a snow blower.

The good news here is that I was able to return the items to Sears without any problem. They always stand behind what they sell, a big plus for me....
