I am a newcomer to using a lathe. It would have been very helpful to have an instructional video. We hooked up the copycrafter, but don't know if we hooked it up right. We tried to copy a spindle, but the cutter made a very poor job of rounding the spindle. The directions were not very clear.
I was able to figure out making a spindle free hand, but the lathe tools became dull very quickly. This was quite an expensive purchase for me & now I will have to purchase better quality lathe tools as well....

Expecting the same results and performance from this lathe at this price, as you would get from a $2000 + top of the line lathe doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. This is a decent lathe for the price. I like my lathe and use it often but it is kind of a pain at times. Start with the tracer. I bought the tracer in order to make 4 uniform table legs. However you cannot get the cutting tool on the tracer to cut close enough to the chuck to duplicate the leg. The tail stock lock handle snapped off with the threads still inside the tailstock locking cam. The head unit (motor, chuck etc) is hard to lock down flat. When you put pressure on the material with the tailstock the head unit will rise up, unfortuantely the cam lock that holds this unit to the bed is poorly designed and doesn't lock it down like it should. The tailstock to lathe bed lock as well as the tool rest to lathe bed lock get hung up often and you have to jiggle the tailstock and tool rest respectively, to move them along......

Very easy to assemble, great directions. It took me just a few hours to assemble. The tracer lathe works great for experienced and inexperienced woodcrafters. The only downside of the lathe is the attachment it came with to put on the tracer product on the centers. I had to fabricate new pieces to accomodate it. The wood lathe is a treasured piece of equipment for all wood shops. I highly recommend this product....
