I purchased this trimmer primarily on the recommendation of **************** (not the first time CR has led me in the wrong direction). The blade cuts well, no disappointment there. But I found the trimmer to be awkward to use in high and tight places, and it is heavy and loud (use ear protection for sure). If I had the decision to make again, I would shop around a bit more. The price was great and it cuts well, but the other factors make this purchase a disappointment. Sears should consider a redesign to address consistent consumer criticisms of this trimmer....and ****************....that's another story.
...

I purchased this trimmer on-line and saved about $15. I had purchased a Black and Decker last year (I think a hedge hog) that performed miserably. This trimmer is fantastic and trims with no splintering. I have 8 evergreen shrubs in front of my house that trimmed beautifully. I have 20 leland cypress and plan to tackle them tomorrow. Thank you Sears and thank you Craftsman for another fine product. A definite score of 10.
...

I purchased these trimmers yesterday and trimmed my front hedges last night. On the plus side, they seem to have sufficient power, cut well and are fairly priced. On the negative side, I noticed three areas which could be improved. 1. The single point grip front handle has got to go. It is very difficult to comfortably hold the trimmers at a 90 degree angle while doing the side of the bushes. It is also uncomfortable to hold when horizontally trimming bushes slightly higher than chest level. The loop handle on other models is far more comfortable. 2. The requirement to constantly engage the secondary safety switch on the extended handle also makes certain trimming positions very difficult. 3. When trying to do a flat sweep over bushes wider than the length of the cutting bar, the bottom of the chain guard has a tendency to catch in the bush. This is very distracting and makes it difficult to accomplish a smooth and level cut. After taping the front switch to ON and removing the chain guard......

I bought this trimmer because of the great reviews from this site as well as Consumer Reports. It felt really comfortable and flew through the bushes, hedges, and small trees in my yard. Like another reviewer noted though, it's kinda awkward trying to reach high places while depressing both buttons to activate the trimmer. I came up with an idea to use man's best friend, duct tape, to hold down the top button full time. Although this worked well for being able to stand on your tippy-toes and one handling the trimmer to get to those hard to reach places, I quickly learned of the danger from this when I saw a flash, heard some popping sounds and smelled something burning. As it turns out, as I went to remove some loose trimmings with one hand while holding the trimmer with the other, I ended up cutting through the extension cord :( I must say the trimmer cut through a 100 foot 14 gauge extension cord with relative ease. Would I recommend this trimmer? Absolutely. Would I recommending by-passing......

Trimmer was powerful and did a great job cutting through thick hedges. What I don't like is that it requires the operator to depress two buttons (one with each hand) for it to run. It makes it awkward to cut angles and tight spaces and is ergonomically uncomfortable and causes fatigue on the left hand. I know this is a safety feature but it just became very annoying and made me want to return it to the store after about an hour of trimming....

Initially I was very pleased with the Craftsman brand. I was replacing a B&D whos motor had worn out from use.
After time though, the blades began developing gaps. I would tighten down the screws until they eventually would get stripped and need to be replaced.
There is no sharpening these type of blades. You must replace them. I priced replacement and it is $50. Way 2 expensive for some stamped metal pieces. Over time, the cutting ability diminishes and you will need to replace else end up with bad cuts and damaged shrubs that comes from that.
I think next purchase will be a more pro model for me in which the blades can be resharpened......

I just purchased this trimmer and could not be happier with it's performance... It was a replacement for a Black and Decker 20 inch that I had only had for two years and the motor burnt up in it. It had not been used all that much, was kept in my garage and I did use a heavy duty extension cord as I do all my power tools.... I have found every Sears product I have ever purchased to be of top quality...including appliances, hand tools, shop vacs, compressors, tires, etc. I always take out the extended warranties but have yet to use one for repairs or replacements. I do know from my previous experience with Black and Decker, the only thing I would buy again would be their 18 volt battery operated grass trimmer...this product is excellent..
I am especially pleased to see this hedge trimmer comes with a cover case for the blade.... It's easy to handle, noise is no more, if as much as any other hedge trimmer and like the longer length to reach between shrubs, etc.

I purchased this product to replace an older 18" Craftsman trimmer that was light but was totally unsatisfactory in trimming performance. I wish I had replaced it sooner. This 22" product is doing an excellent job of trimming both large and small branches. It's trimming performance is comparable to a gas powered hedge trimmer I own. I'm not surprised that it is currently out of stock since it is an excellent product at a reasonable price....

I put it together in about 5 minutes and had it up and running for 3 hours without any problem. Highly recommend it. Great value for a great price....
