After a couple of years shoveling or paying a plow driver to move snow and leave me, leaving me the cleanup near Garage doors and both the front and back walkways to each door, I started to think that there is a better way. I checked Consumer reports and headed directly to Sears where I bought the Craftsman 250cc 28" path Snow Thrower. As Consumer Reports listed, it had more then I ever expected. I like to plug it in and use the electric starter. It starts on the first try if I have the choke set right. No trouble starting after several months of good weather, when it sits in storage either. All of the controls are right where I need them. It drives uphill and steers well in all kinds of snow. It makes me want to clean a much larger area then I would, if I were using only a shovel. I highly reccomend this Craftsman model to any homeowner because of it's ease of operating and dependably. Steve
...

Too bad I purchased this unit so late in the season! I haven't had the chance to see what it really is capable of. We have a 100ft. driveway and it cleared it of four inches of snow in very short order. The snow thrower has exceptional power and it starts on the first pull. Assembly required only one wrench, and took just ten minutes. The instruction manual is very detailed, and includes all the information needed to operate the unit. This may sound weird, but I actually can't wait to get to use it again....

I got the machine when I moved into my home, fearing the contimuation of a miserable winter. The first time I used it was to clear a rarely used driveway that had been snowed in for a couple of weeks with about 10 inches of heavy snow with a moderate crust. Machine started immediately, and in about 10 minutes I had cleared 30 feet of driveway.

After the last snowstorm, I cleared the property in about 45 minutes - 6 inches of very heavy snow, 200 feet of sidewalk, and 80 feet of driveway, including a 2 inch diameter branch that had fallen during the storm. The machine stalled when the branch jammed the auger - I don't know why the shear pin held....

Seems like the snow gets heavier every year. This year we decided we needed some help. Could not rationalize the high prices of Honda/Toro/Ariens. Sorted out that this was the replacement for the highly rated model in Consumer Reports. Have used it 5 times in the past month. Does a remarkable job. We've had all types of snow. The light fluffy stuff gets jettisoned about 50 feet away (at least). Even the really wet heavy snow is hurled 10-12 feet away. Once the snow was so heavy that slush clogged the discharge chute. This is very easy to unclog. So far, no problem with the dreaded sheared bolts, but seems to me that's a function of how heavy the snow is - going slow and steady is a good idea. I only use speeds higher than 3 to get back to the garage when finished. Haven't even tried electric start. Prime, set choke, one pull and it starts. The chute is plastic, but seems plenty strong enough to me. Again, it pays to be patient with heavy wet snow. I should mention our driveway is 75 feet......

This is a great machine! It powered through the mixed snow that had landed that storm and tackled some of the older stuff that had iced up. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that after only the first use, one of the bolts that hold the handle bar to the machine, had wiggled out. After the second use, guess what happened? Yup, you got it. the second one on that side came out also! Grrrr. I called Sears and they did send out the replacement bolts. I gotta say Sears, though, I have spent way to much time making repairs to a BRAND NEW MACHINE! To prevent this happening again, I also added nylon nuts to the bolts....

I bought this snow blower after much research. I had several criteria that I wanted met: "power steering," Briggs engine, and the cost had to be under $1000. This snow blower met all three of my criteria.

I looked into purchasing other brands like Toro and Simplicity, however, even though they are almost unanimously considered to be better machines overall, I found them all to be cost prohibitive. I personally couldn't justify spending $1300 -$1500 on a snow blower that will only be used 10X a year at very most here in CT. I found this machine to be a good buy for all of the features it has compared to similar MTD manufactured products.

Overall I like the snow blower. I've owned it for about 2 months now and have had the opportunity to use it about 7X in all different types of conditions. It works best in heavy snow, but can handle as little as an inch. It throws the snow about 20 feet or so in just about any direction, however, the chute does not rotate a full 180 degrees. I, like other......

There are certain things good about this blower. It has a briggs and straten engine and it is quite. Other then that it should be put in the SINGLE stage catogory not 2. The fuel tank is very small, runs out fast. to light for anything other than small jobs or light snow. And make sure you carry a cresent wrench with you when you operate it. Bolts and handle bars and other stuff fall off or come loose. This is a very cheaply made machine....

I added an additional garage with another 90' drive to clear along with the old drive. I have been using a Toro that had difficulty in throwing the snow far enough and took 11/2 hours to clear the snow. I have to throw in one direction because of the winter winds. The Craftsman starts with one pull and cut my time of clearing the drives to 1/2 hour. In fact I did my drive and my neighbors drive in one hour....

I had planned to buy the 24" 2-stage for $599 but got a leftover from last year, a 26" with OHV Tecumseh engine for 540 instead. After 2 wks. of sitting in my garage, much of the oil had leaked out onto the floor from either a cracked block or cylinder cover/cover gasket. I returned to Sears and told the salesman I had dealt with previously. I thought he would just send out a service tech but, no, he said, "We'll send out a new one, assembled, and pick the old one up tomorrow (Sunday)". He checked the inventory and no 26" were left so he asked if I would mind taking a 28" instead at no extra charge. I had looked at the offerings at Lowe's and Home Depot before I bought at Sears. I wonder if they would have responded as well under the same circumstances. I think I know the answer.
As to the unit, I would have preferred a throttle control, fuel shutoff valve, carburetor bowl drain and cable-controlled chute. But these are all minor things I can certainly live without. With service like this,......

A community of 7 homeowners outside of Boston purchased this together to take care of our sidewalks and short driveways. We had a VERY snowy winter so far since we bought it. The town plows in our driveways with crud everytime the plows go up and down the street. So far this machine has handled everything flawlessly. We bought the extra shear pins but have not had to replace them yet. We use the gas stablizer as recommended. It has stood up to various users no problem. We tried to buy the next model up but Sears was out of stock in all the stores, but this one works just fine....

The other day my neighbor and I were clearing snow from our driveways and I noticed he had a new Craftsman 250cc 28" path Two Stage Snow Thrower. Looking from a distance, I noticed that the machine had little problems throwing the snow exactly where it needed to go. I asked if I could give it a try and I was impressed from the first pass.

The snow thrower was easy to maneuver and seemed to guide itself. Overall, the snow was thrown, the driveway was clean, I wasn't tired, so the experience was good. My only issue with the device is where to store when not in use? I, like many, have a packed garage as it is and another device will surely mean something will need to be removed......
