All around a decent mower with one perhaps significant exception. When mowing down the slightest incline, smoke pours out the front end of the mower. That is very dissappointing. Something is clearly wrong.
...

I bought a GT 5000 in summer of 2004 in 06 the motor really started smoking bad. Alot of blow by on rings it has a 25 hp. kolher motor hydro tyranny's reverse is weak with full throttle pushing dirt, stone, or snow with chains and weights. I bought attachments but they don't fit anything else if I by a different mower, so I keep an eye on oil every time I mow, and now I fogg mosquitoes with it as I mow. I do not own a 26 hp 54" garden Tractor but this was the only one to write a review on, same tractor bigger motor, they don't have a 25 hp. any more to replace in mine. Around $1600.00 to replace now. with a 26 hp. Hmmm might as well by new with warranty. ???? Sounds good to them $$$$
...

We got this machine along with our house purchase in 2007. Although it's an earlier model, it's still basically the same as this new, 2009 model. Quite frankly, we beat the you-know-what out of this thing. It's not intentional, its just that our property is pretty rough. There's a lot of rocky areas, bumps and dips and some nasty hills. So I guess we've found just about every weak point this machine has. Here's what we've encountered.

The Number 1 failure items are the aluminum stanchion's that the mower blade drive shafts run in. I think they are made to be sacrificial and lets just say it doesn't take much to kill them! Hit a rock hard once and that's it. Catch a piece of rope? There goes another one, hit a baseball, oops - I did it again! In the last three seasons I've replaced 5 of them and I found paper work showing that the original owner had all three replaced the previous year when it was not even a year old! Fortunately, they are pretty easy to replace if you're handy. They...
...

I made the mistake of buying one of these a few years ago. Every year I have to get a new carb - $350 installed. Why? nothing wrong with the carb. But they put some kind of a solenoid on it that corrodes out every year. Can't get it without getting a new carb.

The plow is pointless. The thing doesn't have enough grip to push anything, even with wheel weights and chains.

The mower deck has now decided to quit working all together. I'll have to waste at least two days now taking it apart to see if I can make it work again. I'm not even sure it's worth it. I have had to have this in for servicing more than my car - and it has 132,000 miles on it! I should have gotten the Briggs & Stratton version. I have no problem with my 10 year old mower with the Briggs, nor with my generator.

Stay away from this POS. It's more money - and trouble - than it's worth.
...

I did some serious research and was always leary of the Craftsman line because of some of the reviews. When I bought our property (5 acres) we got a John Deer lawn tractor as part of the deal. Parts were needed and the cost was huge.

Ended up picking this tractor up and have run the snot out of it with no problems. It is a pleasure to use and the tractor handles the 5 acres with no problems. The shock system is much better than the John Deer. To be honest, the JD is a smaller tractor.

I feel I got my moneys worth, and am pleased with the products durability.

I purchased my mower about 2.5 yrs ago and have found that the mower has the power i needed and is pretty rugged. At the back of my lawn it is partially field and very rough, the mower has had no problem. Sears sells a product called Mo Deck, if you use this it will not clog up with clippings.....

We recently bought a 26 horsepower 54 inch cut garden tractor. We have 61/2 acers to cut and this really decreases the time of mowing down. Our last mower was a 44 inch cut and this one beats it by miles. My husband doesn't say much except that it is "ok" but from him it is praise. When he shows me how to use it I am going to GO FOR A RIDE! It cuts very well and looks good too.
...

This tractor has been amazing, not only has it cut my 2 acre lot on a weekly basis it has done full size tractor duty towing boats and trailers around to mow underneath them. It has held up great. I will never go back to a normal mower....

I bought this tractor last spring and have thoroughly enjoyed it thus far. I cut 2 acres with it, and have had absolutely no problem with the 54" deck. this baby really throws the grass! Reduced my cutting time by 20 minutes, where I used to just cut flat out as fast as I could. Now. I take my time and can cut at a slower speed while still saving time (Had a 14 HP w/42" deck before. I am impressed at the appearance of the finished cut too - better than I expected for the size of the deck!
Never converted to the mulching blades this fall, but was pleasently surprised at how well this mower still mulched/chopped the leaves (never had to sweep/bag them at all).
I basically just use it to cut grass, and expect it to be a workhorse for this purpose for many years to come.

The only complaint I have would be that the reverse pedal/mower speed is too slow when the mower is engaged....

This is my 3rd Craftsman Tractor. I only have 8 hrs on it so far but have been really impresssed. I have 4.5 acres to mow so the mower really get a lot of use. Lots of power and a great cut for a great price. I think a lot of problems occur if you do not double check the set up from the factory ie leveling the deck, checking that all bolts were tightened. I would not hesitate to recommend this mower to anyone!...

My mower is less than 3 years old. At the end of the warranty period it started smoking very bad. I kept the maintenance up as usual. Last week the engine blew a rod thru the side wall and quit. Replacement engine is $1,399. I am also displeased with the 54" deck. Mine had a very hard time getting rid of the cut grass while mowing. The cut grass would build up on the walls of the mower deck to the point that it would wear down the ends of the blades. I started mowing when my grass was dry to eliminate this problem. It still built up anyway. Blades are $25 each times three. I spent more time trying to get the built up cut grass out of the inside of the deck than acutally mowing! Very frustrating. Do not recommend the 54" deck nor the Briggs & Straton 22 hp engine....

I liked my Craftsman DYS 4500 so well that I decided to move up to a 6500. I use it on my four acre yard and find that the 54" cut saves a lot of time. The short turning radius helps too. The automatic transmission is great. I would hate to have to go back to a shift model. It has plenty of power and the slightly larger wheels mean good traction on steep hills. I highly recommend it....
