I have crafmans model 917-387271 from 1999. I have about 1/2 acre block. This lawn mower never gave me any problems. Apart from air filter, spark plugs, I did not change anything. The catcher bag joints came part. I sew the thing myself. This is still doing great-- now I feel its piston ring may be due from a change. So today 02-13-2010, I bought one Home lite electric mower-- I tried to mow my yard - it was ok in front of the house BUT when I tried to take at back of the house, I found its too massy- rolling up the wires and plugging it bak etc, Also I noted down the electric meter reading, at the end I worked out the usage - it came about a dollar bill. If I buy a dollar worth of gas for my 917-38721 , I can cut 1/2 acre block at least 3 times.

So I found electric mower uneconomical fo me so I returned the home lite within 3 hours of puchase. I am concerned about my pocket in long run.
...

I purchased the 550 series Briggs & Stratton 21" Rear Discharge mower (model 917.388191) in March 2009. After only a few mowings in the spring the engine started sounding funny. It would rev up and then slow down. There is no speed adjustment on this model. Fortunately it continues to start and mow the lawn, but it doesn't sound right. After the Fall season ends, I plan to bring it in for a warranty repair. Fortunately it has a two yr warranty
...

I bought this mower and have mowed my lawn one time with it. It came assembled, all I had to do is add oil and it started right up. Great, I thought, how easy it was to start that first time. Now I go to take it out for the second time and it WILL NOT start. I prime it, pull the cord and the mower runs for a couple seconds and quits. I don't care how inexpensive it is, a mower should be able to start more than ONCE. Get something else.
...

We were looking for an affordable lawn mower that would work well and was from a brand we knew and had a good reputation. This mower looks nice and works very well even when we've let the lawn go for a couple of weeks. Assembly was a cinch and my fiance has had nothing but good things to say about it. Picking it up at the store was also an easy and pleasant experience.
...

I have a 1/2 acre yard with a lot of shrubs and trees. I primarily use a tractor to mow but use a push-mower for the close-in work or occassionally I will mow the entire yard with the push mower for exercise. In 20 years I have gone through two push-mowers. They were both very low-end MTD-made mowers with B&S engines and no frills. They did the job expected of them. When it came time to replace the 2nd of these two I wasn't sure what I wanted---an upper-end mower with a Honda engine and lots of frills or another bare-bones model. While an upper-end model would outlive a "bare-bones" model I could buy two of the lower-end models over 15-20 years and still pay less than I would for one upper-end model. As with everything else, often the bare-bones models are not the best-value either.

My criteria for a mower was that it had to be the best-value. I defined "best-value" as additional features over a base model with incremental cost less than the incremental value of the additional features....
...

Just 13 months old and has been nothing but a headache and disappointing waste of my money.

1. The bag gets only about a third full before the clippings end up on the ground and caked up over the blade.

2. Spill gas while fueling and in days you'll see where you spilled gas as there'll be bare metal or plastic or whatever where gas made contact.

3. After you use it once it looks like you're the third generation that's owned this mower: caked on filth, total dust, grass everywhere, etc.

4. Any contact with a bush branch and more than likely you'll knock off a little spring by the air filter. When that happens the motor revs at about 1/4 of it's capability. Eventually after all the times you replace the spring it gets stretched and the mower at best will be at half speed (which I'll admit is good for stretching the gasoline).

5. Any contact with any small thing sticking out of the ground, like a root for example, and you're likely to knock off the rear flap on one side. Should...
...

Because of a sale I was able to get this rear-bag version of Sears simplest mower for just 20 bucks more, but now I'm sorry I bought it. In mulch mode (with bag removed and rear flap down) grass shoots forward from the rear cover and covers the deck and motor. What a mess! The instructions say there is supposed to be a mulch plug but mine didn't have any in the box. Attaching the bag was fairly painless but when I went over a dry area on my lawn, the rear "dust control" bag let out huge clouds of dust. What dust control? Again, what a mess! By the time I was done the mower was covered top to bottom with grass and dust. And I've got a very small yard! We're talking twenty minutes of use. I don't have a good feeling about this machine. Will be interesting to see if a mulch plug does actually come with it but got left out of the box, or if instead it doesn't and this is the design. A mulch plug which would cover the outlet hole and fit under the back flap is a real necessity. I'd really...
...

Craftsman 21inch self propelled mulcher w/ Honda 5.5 HP

Have had this for 2 years. Been the worst mower we've ever had. I had an older craftsman 22 push w/ briggs for 10 years mowing 2 large yards and a very large church yard for 4 of those years. Lasted forever, could cut through anything (w/ 3.75 hp). Got this to replace when other one finally died, have had engine rebuilt 2x by sears, first under warranty, second out of pocket. They changed oil after first year when they rebuilt it. After the second year I changed the oil.. this piece of **** took tons of my time trying to figure out how to drain the oil. Couldn't find a drain plug anywhere...looked in the manual after hours and turns out there isn't one. You have to turn it upside down to drain the oil out where you put it in. Now the last 3 times I have attempted to mow the .20 acre (maybe not that) yard with it only about 2 to 3 inches high, it acts like it has no power. Like the blades aren't turning very fast...
...

I purchased this mower a month ago, and the reviews are right--it was very easy to assemble and ready for mowing in minutes. My husband used it 2 times without any problem. Last week it began doing this: starting, running for a few seconds, then cutting off. It starts up easy enough but won't stay on. Gas, oil, everything looks fine. I'm hoping we can take it back. Looks like several others have had the same problem, so buyer beware....

Mower comes pre-assembled; all you have to do is pour in the included oil, extend the folding handle, and add some gas. Don't forget to prime to engine or else you'll be pulling the start cord for a while. After priming, starts on first pull. I've had this since Jun 18 09. Mulching is excellent. I haven't used the bag yet - saving that for the Fall leaves. With the handle folded, takes up minimal space in the garage. I am very pleased with my purchase....

Bag is easy to empty and put back on. I bought it for me, but my husband likes it better than his J.D. mower. He says my Craftsman mows better. I recommend it to everyone I talk to about mowers!...
