I am NOT happy with this unit. It's near impossible to start and will be going in for warranty service today after a VERY unpleasant weed-whacking experience. I will not accept it back unless it starts by the third starter rope pull.

I purchased the CA model several months ago (Oct-2010) at a good sale price. I finally unboxed it and assembled it for a 1 acre weed whacking job a few weeks ago, and another round this last weekend to finish the job. After adding the oil that was included in the box (nice!!) and filling up the gas tank it started after 3 pulls (suweet!!)

But wait, I speak to soon. After the first time I had to shut it down to add gas the bugger was a BEAST to start again. 20 pulls to start... And each time the motor was stopped for fueling or stalled and had to be restarted in was a VERY unpleasant experience. I have a sore arm and blisters on my hand from the goofy shaped starter rope handle. (made for a SMALL hand)

At one point mid-cutting in 70- degree weather, when I added...
...

I saw this trimmer work on just regular weeds/grass. I bought it for heavy-duty work. This worked on my 3-4 feet high, thick brush, and weeds, including poison oak vines and whatever else got in the way! I absolutely love it!

If you are using this for thick brush, buy extra string. It really works, but you will need extra. When it hits a thicker trunk, it tends to cut the string down short. But, as I said, it is well worth it in the end! Yes, indeed!

I would recommend it most definitely!
...

I have had the trimmer for two years, one year of which it was out of service due to a clogged carburettor. They failed to place an insulating gasket between the cylinder head and the carburettor causing heat to be conducted into the carburettor causing the gas to boil in the carburettor. The whiskers snap off at the cutter head due to sharp metal at the attachment point. I fixed by using a 5/32 inch round file to cut a radius. The cutter head jams constantly due to vine winding and is nearly impossible to get off and the manual does not provide any help. It lacks a fuel shut off valve and fuel filter.
...

Weeds, weeds everywhere. This is a big step up from the hand held trimmer. Be sure to check for rocks or other objects that may damage your new trimmer. It works on uneven ground where the tractor can't go. I wish that it cut through a bit thicker stems. I have lots of sage brush. It works great on the mustard though.
...

I bought one last Saturday because my 11 year old Craftsman fell apart the other day. This thing cuts everything I have and I have not been able to stall it like the old one used to. However using it on weeds is very tiring. The wheels are 4 inches shorter than my old one allowing it to get stuck in every gopher hole and rut. I had to muscle it over an area that wiped my out in two hours. Larger tires go over terrain much easier than short ones. The new ones wheels are even shorter than my lawn mowers.

My old one didn't have an axle, the wheels just bolted to the chassis. With this new one the wheels ride on an axle about an inch and a half from the chassis resulting in weeds constantly getting wrapped around them. It also seems to use about 2-3 times the fuel as the old one did.

On a very posative note it cut everything I went through with it (I even cut down a cotton wood sapling without damaging the line that came with it). That included wild oats (4-5 feet tall), marsh...
...

I bought one of these about a decade ago, at a Sears "sidewalk sale", shortly after purchasing my 10 acre parcel in the mountains. It has been a real workhorse, and I will certainly buy another if I can't fix the one I have any more. It is a critical tool for a property this big. It is more ergonomic than the pole trimmers, and each tank of gas takes me about 45 minutes to burn through - take a break, get a drink, then go back and wack weeds for one more tank of gas. I'm good for about 2 tanks of gas in an afternoon. I have dozens of replacement plastic trim lines, of course; the rodents have eaten parts of the gas cap, a bolt fell out with the rough terrain one day, and I've replaced filters, belt and spark. It is a close match for the environment it helps me to keep under "control". I recommend this to all of my friends who have large parcels with uneven terrain (you can't drive a tractor-styled mower on these properties). I highly recommend you buy some spare filters when you buy one....
...

Today was the last straw. It had lost all compression and the trimmer turns without any power. Motor works but the trimmer lines do not move with any power.
I got home with the trimmer, set it up and found the wheels rubbed against the shroud assembly. Fortunately we don't live too far away from the store, so I took it back to exchange for another. The wheels on that one also rubbed. The spacers were of incorrect size. Finally we found the floor model had the correct spacers. It works fine, but I would recommend taking it out of the box at the store to make sure this condition doesn't exist. Craftsman needs to up it quality control on this product....

I live on acreage in So. Calif. In the spring, after the winter rains, the weeds grow from two ft to 4 ft tall and are much to difficult for a regular lawnmower to handle. I work the trimmer hard every year from March to May and then it sets until the following year. I bought my first one in about 1998 on the recommendation of a friend, who told me that it was easy enough to start for a woman. I used this every spring to knock down all my weeds. Unfortuntely, it was stolen off my property sometime the winter of 2002, by someone who borrowered it once. I struggled with the weeds that year by using a lawnmower. Then I bought I bought a used 6.75 hp and have been using it the last seven years. I highly recommend this machine to anyone who lives in a rural area with thick wild grasses and weeds... It is an excellent workhorse and requires little maintenance. If needed, I will buy this machine again....

I have approximately 500 feet of chain link fencing around my front/back yard which used to take all day to weed with a conventional trimmer. I would have to stop and take breaks because my arms would feel like "jello" from all the vibrations. Now I can do the entire fenceline in one hour !!! This has made my yard work incredibly easy. Like I said...Awesome !!!...

After monsoon season in Arizona, the weeds grow by the foot inside a week. A normal lawnmower is useless when you're trying to chop down 18'' grasses.
My husband and I borrowed one of these from a friend, and (that same day) bought one of our own. Duelling scorched-earth brought the front lawn back to us. Awesome machine, like a weedwacker only three times as fast. Easy to use, incredible job, I love this machine....

I don't have to spend the whole day carrying the hand held line trimmer. It's like a lawnmower, but cuts through the thickest weeds with ease. I wanted to order it but it's out of stock. That tells me that the customer wants a tough product. I can't emphasize enough that this is the ultimate weedwhacker ever....
