This thing is huge, which is probably good for some folks but not for me. I bought it online and didn't do enough due diligence. This one is stocky. It probably weighs 30 to 40 lbs. I am returning and getting the smaller version. Not the fault of the product but that of the purchaser....

i purchased this vise a few years back. yesterday one of the jaws snapped across the bolt hole that connects it to the vise itself. i remembered on the box where it said 'replaceable jaws' which was something i liked when making the purchase.

i combed the sears website, and instead of finding the jaws, i found numerous complaints on how no parts were available for this tool, as well as many similiar complaints about the jaws cracking.

i saw the number '5186' stamped on the right side of the vise, which turns out to be one that was manufactured by a company named wilton. i reached them today, and they were willing to send me a pair of replacement jaws for 40.00 dollars, not include shipping or any other costs. needless to say i will be shopping for a new vice somewhere, and it will not be sears, and it will not be from wilton.

My wife bought me this early on in our marriage. One of the best tools she has ever gotten me. I have beat on this vise and it has survived. The handle is a bit bent and it is not top of the line but far better than I would have expected, particularly considering we had no money at the time and she knows nothing about tools. I am attached to it now. I still use it and would not part with it. I do not remember when I bent the handle, but I bet I had a pipe on it.

I cannot tell where this vise is made.

Cheers!

Purchased this vise based on the name, and price. It is a sturdy piece, but I am a little disappointed at the overall quality, and the fact that is Made in China. The pivot hole in the upper part is a cast hole, and the pivot bolt has a machined shoulder. Needless to say, they aren't even close , and the vise does not tighten down squarely. I machined a bushing, and bored the cast hole to a round dimension, installed the bushing, and now it is as smooth as silk, and tightens down properly. I realise that I probably voided the warranty, but it is only warranted for 1 year, anyways, not lifetime, as the rest of the Craftsman tool line,( another dissappointment ). I am reasonably sure that it will last quite a while
...

Bought this thing, and the jaws cracked. Tried to get new jaws from sears, and they do not carry them. Was told that I needed to contact some third party to get them. Sick of even bothering at this point after 1/2 hour on the phone with sears. Threw it away, bought a Matco vice that was not much more than the Craftsman one, that has replacement parts available, but it is such better quality, that I have never had to replace any parts. It is just nice to know that they are available. I have read online many places that the jaws are ridiculously expensive even if you do find them, so I gave up my search for them. Quality sears tools are a thing of the past, and the sears customer service that was once legendary, is a thing of the past as well. DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK!!!
...

The vise itself isn't to shabby for light duty work. Do not buy this if you are going to put any torque or strain on it. The poor little thing just can't take it. The jaws will break and you will have to purchase a new vice. The side bolt that holds the vice in position on the bench just does not provide sufficient clamping pressure. The vice will turn from side to side with any kind of pressure. A good quality vise should last a life time. This vise has a very limited service life completely dependant on how long the clamp jaws last. I know a good quality vise is expensive but do you really want to buy this one twice?
...

I've used and abused my Craftsman 6" HD Vise for the past 10 years and it has never failed me. Initially I found too much play in the opening\closing cam action, but quickly remedied that by tightening the main swivel bolt that was 2 threads loose. Since then, this vise has helped me hand threaded 2" pipe, has supported multiple large woodworking projects for construction and assembly fabrication, drill large 1\2" plate steel and hammer into submission rebar and angled steel with my shop 5# double head sledge.

I find the 6" vise has a large opening capacity, holds objects tightly and releases with ease. It isn't designed for industrial use, but then it only comes in at 10-20% of the commercial vise $$$ market! Yep, it's easily handles all of my DIY projects and has been an Outstanding supportive unit for my homeowner construction-fabrication-maintenance needs!
...

Works very well for lighter duty tasks but starts to flex under heavier work. Overall it has worked well but I have noticed the craftsman quality has started to decline. extra metal here and there to support the jaws would have gone a long way in making this a really great vise. also a stop to prevent the front jaw from coming completly loose would be helpful and also making all of the mounting holes evenly spaced would have made mounting the vise much easier.
...
