First, the product was missing two of the parts - the chuck key and the handle. Still haven't been able to get them. When using the guide I found the action to be rough; it was difficult to get the slides to compress smoothly. It is OK on a flat, horizontal surface, but it moves around when used in other orientations. It could benefit from a chuck that does not need a chuck key. I would recommend looking for another brand.
...

Love this drill guide! Price is great, especially compared to the price of a drill press. Very versitale. Love the ability to drill round stock and edges. Only gave 4 stars because the slide sticks a little bit. Had to lube the slides and the drill.
...

wbsisk says "The Craftsman Drill guide is a versatile tool" about Craftsman Drill Guide

Searching for a drill guide I did not find a host of them available. I chose the Craftsman because of my years of experience with Craftsman tools (great products). I have not been disappointed. There are times when a drill press is just too cumbersome and non-portable. And doing angles is often impossible with a press. Any tool has its limitations, and this guide is no exception, but if you use it for what it is designed to do, and do not push its limitations, I think anyone would be satisfied with it.

Doesn't spin smooth at all, and it's difficult enough to use, that I gave up. You can't use it near edges because of the rubber feet... and if the drill bit isn't long, good luck getting it to penetrate anything.

Not something you'll use everyday. But you'll be happy you have it when you need it. Best feature is the groove for round or odd shape stock. Great for drilling at angles. You just can't always use your big drill press to drill that 45 degree angle.
...

The first Craftsman Drill Guide I purchased was missing a part and had to be returned. The second one had a defective part and also was returned. Shame on Craftsman for putting out such a poorly designed and cheaply made product. I'll look elsewhere for a more substantial product!...

The quality looks to be about what I expected for the price - not bad and it functions as advertised. I agree wiith one other reviewer, loose the springs as they are too stiff.

The reson for 2 stars was the sticky lubricant or protective coating on the unit - it is a real mess. I've totally taken it apart and applied several passes with Krud Kutter and the guide still is sticky - not to mention my hands. You guys at Sears should take one of these thing home to see what I'm talking about.
...

The drill guide is a very useful attachment for accurate drilling. However, while using a 2" hole saw the blade grabbed, torqued the drill which levered against a guide bar and snapped the cross guide. The cross guide is made of very brittle pot mettle. not quality at all. So, after three uses I have to replace the cross guide which Sears Parts Direct does not even recognize. I hope I have not wasted $30 on a Craftsman tool....

I got this jig after reading some of the reviews to install some euro hinges on some cabinets that I'm making. The drilling has to be precise. Well I was not disappointed this thing works great. I set the debt and attached the drill and every one of the holes I drilled was right on. This is one of those tools you don't use every day but it's good to have just in case....

If you need to drill precise holes but the material to be drilled is too large to fit on a drill press, then this is the tool for the job. This guide works extremely well with almost any 3/8 corded drill. I've used this guide for drilling the holes for adjustable shelving inside of cabinet walls where it was critical that the drilling be precise. This is one of those tools that you don't use every day, but when you need it, nothing else will do. I'm a furniture/ cabinet maker and this tool (among other tools I use) helps me achieve the quality in my work that my customers desire. I totally recommend this tool....

Some drill guides got bad writeups but Sears received good ratings so I bought one. My main use for it is to drill holes in panels when I can't use a drill press. I have a problem drilling straight holes with hand drills for whatever reason. This product takes care of the problem. The spriings are a little stiff but they are easy to remove if you want to. The price is reasonable in relation to other similar products. I clamp the guide down whenever I can using a quick grip clamp....

I agree with Edgar from Va. I too have the original Portalign.

This solves 2 of the problems with the original Portalign:

1. Can accommodate a drill with a bigger body. Allows you to use just about any 3/8 " drill.
2. Comes with a chuck so that you dont have to remove your drill chuck to dedicate to this jig.

Minuses:

1. Alignment guide are a little wobbly, you have to tighten them frequently. But for this I would have given it a 5* rating.
2. Drill chuck is not keyless--what do you expect for this price! Not a deal breaker....

Clever jig. Very useful. I still own one of the original drill jigs from about 20 years ago manufactured by Portalign Tool Co. of San Diego, Calif. (a company now long gone). Even with a drill press, the number of times I have reached for this little guy is beyond count; it can perform operations that would be simply impractical or almost impossible on a drill press.
The biggest difference from the original is that this one can drill holes at an angle and mount on a workbench with flat head wood screws. Nice improvements. And, if you occasionally want to edge sand using through 2 diameter sanding drums, the instructions show how to mount it under a 2-1/4 hole to do just that (see Craftsman 21 piece sanding drum kit #25262).
The first thing I did when I unpacked it was to remove those pesky springs on the guide bars (they do serve a useful purpose, but not for me), remove the rubber pieces on the base (I prefer a flat machined surface), and spray it with a silicone product for smoother......
