The Craftsman Propelled Lawn Mower is easy to handle. It starts very easy which is a delight. I have a steep hill in the front of my house and this mower with the high wheels makes it easy for me to get up the incline without much effort. I really like not having to mix oil and gas together also. Mowing takes a lot less time with this mower compared to other mowers I have had in the past. I know I can rely on it starting every time too.

My wife and I just bought a house and so I needed a lawnmower. I bought this one. I was very pleased with it. The self-propelled part is great. Takes a load off of my shoulders and my arms. Easy start. Used a snapper when I was younger, I would kill myself trying to start it. This one you prime 3 or 4 times pull the cord and bam...it starts! The self propel belt actually fell off of the mower the first time I used it, but that was my fault. I was moving in deep **** and the mower had to give up so it would die. That was fine, easy fix. I do wish the bag was bigger, but it is good sized. I have mowed it twice and I have had to empty around 7 times. Not bad. GREAT MOWER! I AM VERY HAPPY WITH IT! THANKS FOR MAKING A GOOD PRODUCT!

I purchased this new lawn mower. After opened the box, setting up, and started running at no time - maybe 20 minutes. The feature of front-self propelled is great when mowing the yard with high elevation. Love it - Craftman is great. First pull, the engine starts right away. I have used all my yard and garden tools from Craftman, and they are all meet my expectation. Would recommend you to try it. Won't be regret of what Craftman tools have offerred to you.

This mower has been reliable for 7 years. I mow 2/3 acre several times each summer by hand and haven't had a problem yet. Compared with other mowers I've used this one is sturdy and solid and simply a joy to use!

very hard to handle, decent cut though. have to press on 3 bars & hold them in to work the self propelled; really poor design & hands hurt like hell after an hour of mowing. **** blade rattles & comes loose a lot. backflap is a pain the *** & just gets in the way. big real wheels are nice & easy to turn.

I've had this (or a similar model, I can't tell) mower for two years. The front wheel drive system is terribly designed. There is a small metal gear which engages the wheels, but the wheels are made of plastic. Mine failed this weekend. The metal gear meshing with a plastic gear is simply destined to fail. This is one of the dumbest designs I've ever seen. So simple to design around, yet they cheaped out. Now, I have a push mower, but it's impossible to push, because the gears are dragging on the chewed up wheels.

I'd never buy another one, especially since my father told me his last Craftsman mower did the same EXACT THING.

I'm going to see if I can buy replacement wheels, but I'd really rather buy another mower.

I've got about a half-acre of hilly grass to cut, so this self-propelled model seemed like a good value. I also thought I'd try a large rear wheel design for improved turning. This model does cut much better than my old craftsman, but the belt for the self-propelled feature came off the front drive pulley during the first cut. I took the pulley cover off, but then decided to take it back to Sears. The staff there offered put the belt back on and then bent the two metal "keeper" bars inward to prevent the belt from slipping off again. So far, that fix seems to have worked, but a bad design or QA/QC nonetheless.

Comments on other reviewers concerns:

1) The large rear wheels make reaching the height adjustment levers difficult.

2) Since I spend alot of time mowing sideways on hills, I suspect that the large plastic wheels will eventually succumb to the sideways stress and fail...I'd get the small wheel version instead, as the replacements cost $25 each.

I purchased this mower a few days ago as a refurbished unit, and did not really expect much. I needed a new mower in a hurry and this was in front of the store for $155 so I figured it was worth a shot. After examining the mower it was obvious the engine was new, so I would guess the original owner did not put oil in it or ran over something, very little ware anywhere else on mower. After using it I am amazed at how well it cuts, the self propelled mechanism worked flawlessly and the power was fantastic. So far this is the best mower I have owned. Only con is the bag could be a little larger.

This mower replaced a very similar 1996 model Craftsman. After 13 years of use, the old mower was donated to Goodwill. The new mower has similar issues as the older one: The front propelled belt came loose in the first 10 minutes. Ignoring the instructions to remove the blade, I removed the top cover and retainer and repaired the belt. No problems with the belt once I got a feel for the action --squeeze the bar. The rear guard cover was destroyed by the blade as I pulled the mower back -- same thing happened on the old mower. If the purpose of the guard is to prevent objects from launching from the back, it still does not work! The self-propelled function is much improved from the older model in that both front wheels are engaged with the belt and it pulls much faster. The motor is easy to start and runs well; however, it uses more gasoline than the older model due to the faster idle speed with no user adjustments. Do not buy this product!! I have had my Craftsman 650 Series Briggs & Stratton engine lawn mower for 5 weeks and it already looks like I've had it for 5 or more years. The first usage the back flap was eaten badly by the blades and now after two uses the bag attachment has worn off places on it. I have a small yard and this machine is a nightmare to use. If you are a lady I really do not recommend it because it is a little heavier than we need. I don't feel like the self-propelled portion of this works as wonderfully as it should either.For what I paid it is definitely not worth it. l could not give this any more than a 1 rating.

Bought this craftmans mower to replace a brand new non self propelled model that came with my home and was on its last legs after 5 years. This mower is a huge improvement! I was concerned that it might not have enough mower to propell up my hills and it does so with ease. The large wheels make turning very easy. Mower does not clog up with grass like the old one did from day one. All in all a good relatively easy to manuver mower. I would recommend especailly for the price paid.

The high wheels on a self-propelled Sears lawn mower are unnecessary, break very easily, and are expensive to replace ($25 per wheel versus $12 for the low wheel).

I have owned multiple sears lawn mowers (Honda and Briggs powered, self propelled and push) and I have only been disappointed with the high wheels. They cost $10-20 more at original purchase, are harder to handle, break easier, and are expensive to replace. Stick with the low wheel versions.

I am closing in on 40 pretty fast and decided it was time to buy a self propelled mower. I researched and researched and finally decided on this mower. It had names I have trusted for a long time (Sears, Craftsman, Briggs and Stratton) as well as some features I really wanted (big back wheels, self propelled, good handle set-up) so I bought it. I have now mowed with it twice. Mowing has gone from a major chore to an absolute breeze. I now have plenty of energy for the other things I need to do like picking weeds, trimming bushes and trees, etc. This thing was literally 2 minutes to set up and started right up. It goes through tall, wet grass like nobody's business. You don't even need to slow down for that stuff. The bag has a really easy attach and remove system and it's bigger than my old mower bag. The wheels have an easy to use adjustment system and the big back wheels make turning around really easy. The handle has a height adjustment which is really nice as I am 6' tall. In short,......

This mower has a significant drive belt problem. Could be design or assembly issue..First time to cut belt jumped off.. put it back on.. same thing.. exchanged the mower.. repeat problem.. mofified the guides.. so far so good.. once more and it is refund time... It cuts great...mulches perfectly shoots good and bags great. the only problem is that the belt that powers the front wheels occationally flips and comes off. easy fix though just need an alan wrench and a 6 or 7mm socket....

After 2-years the front wheel drive was making noise. I pulled the wheels off, and found the plastic gear-teeth were worn down a lot.I took the weels off my 12-year old FWD sears mower and found them still in good condition. The older wheels were made of better material....

You cant go wrong with Briggs & Strat. My only complaint is the handle is uncomfortable (hurt my hand after only a short time), and the propel speed is not adjustable (a bit too fast). Other than that it is a decent machine. If I had to choose again I may have spent a few extra dollars for better options on a different model, afterall these things will last you a good ten years. Overall I am satisfied....

Sears staff seemed knowledgable. Reported no returns on this model as opposed to other store models. I need the self-propelled because of a back issue. Bought the mower on May 6, 2009 and used it for the first time on May 11, 2009. My 28 year old son used the mower in mulching mode and on the second engagement on the self propelled mode, the self propelled mode failed. He had to finish mowing by pushing. Called Sears on May 16, 2009. Sears said to bring it back for an exchange. We are taking it back the week of May 18, 2009 as it will take two of us to get it into the car....
