After using this mower about 8 times it will turn over but not run. So much for self starting. Have tried changing spark plug, replacing gas, air filter is clean, everything I know to try. I will take this mower to the repair shop and go buy another, different mower. Then I will try to unload this heap of junk. A pain since I have no good/easy way to transport it. Just get a simple mower. And not from Sears. Growl.
...

I got this mower reconditioned for a great price. If I had to pay full price I would have brought it back after the first day of use. Front wheel drive does not pull through grass that needs to be cut down 3 inches or more. Under the front of the mower cutting deck is a piece of metal that forms the front of the cutting deck. This metal is flimsy. It bent and the blade was hitting it. I bent it back with a plyers. The rubber skirt is too long. When backing up the skirt goes under the mower and the blade ripped it off. For a 7hp mower the engine surges and dies when cutting thick grass when the grass is needs 4 or more inches cut off the top. This even happens when I go slow and don't use engage the drive system.
...

Bought this mower back in April. Great mower with all the bells and whistles. Did a fine job. However, The last time I used it, the engine began to throttle down. After restarting it, it throttled down again followed by a loud bang and smoke. Took it to the Sears repair center where it was sent out to check the problem. Much to my surprise, I was told the mower had been neglected and ran without oil. This was obviously not the case, however the oil was degraded. After further evaluation, and speaking with the repair center and customer service, who were polite and helpful, it was explained to me that the oil needs changed every 25 hours per the manual. I concede that I went over this by 15 hours, however, a brand new, $400 push mower should not blow by missing an oil change by a few hours. I'm now left with a $220 repair bill on a mower less than 6 months old. It was my fault, but READ THE MANUAL CAREFULLY. If you do not follow every bit of the maintenance section, you can throw...
...

I bought this mower Aug 8th. Drive and cutting are good, although I believe my old Craftsman mulched better. The blade is different on this one. After six weeks it wouldn't start with the key so I tried to charge it, but still it would not turn over. It did start easily with the pull cord. I figured after only six weeks it was probably a loose connection from the vibration. I started checking and found that the battery terminal was badly corroded and broke off, and the battery connection plug was corroded. The battery is inside the housing where the blade is, and is only protected by a plastic cover that grass and water can get in. The cavity was full of grass. Now I must send it away to be fixed. I believe the battery should be sealed from the grass and blade area or put in another place. I don't want to have to do this every year.
...

I created a profile recently, but it didn't link to my original review from 7/16/2009, so here it is again, with a 3 month update.

I purchased this mower to replace my 13+ year mower which was still running, but pretty much on it's last legs. The mower came fully assembled, all I had to do was roll it out of the box, straighten the handle and tighten the handle joints and It was ready to go, well almost. Next you need to charge the battery for the electric key start, this was simple enough, you just plug the male end of the wall charger to the female end of the battery. The manual says you only need to charge it for 24 hours the first time you use the mower and for 48 hours before you put the mower away for the season. Once I charged it up I added the provided bottle of oil and put some gas in it and was ready to roll. I put the key in turned it and it fired right up.

This mower is absolutely great, better than my self-propelled Lawnboy, key start, I used to have for 10 years. Since using it, the neighbors and other friends have complimented me on the beautiful yard we now have. I am so thankful that Sears has a 90 day no questions replacement. I have had two of these in the past 4 months because the key start quit working, and the very comfortable, soft handle cover rips so easily. I will be getting a replacement again today, hopefully the 90 day replacement will be at least after my first mowing in spring. It appears that the lawnmower will malfunction within 60 days if mowing about every 10 days, so as long as they keep replacing the mower, I think it is the best mower I have ever owned. The operating manual is very brief, and it does not burden you with specifics as to repair since all you do is get a free replacement every 90 days, I have yet to find out from the manual where the battery is located.
...

I retired my 14 year old Craftsman 6.0 hp mower and purchased a Craftsman model 37659. This 7.0 hp front wheel drive mower has plenty of power. I cut grass once per week so it's not unusual to cut 3" - 4" off at a time. I use the mulching feature and have no problem cutting through the tall grass, even damp tall grass. The final cut looks great! I have not use the bag yet so no comments there.

The key start works great but I only used it once just to try it out (the key option is for our 13 year old son). This mower easily starts with one pull on the cord. I find the curved padded handle very comfortable. I always wear gloves when I cut the grass but twice now I've realized half way through that I forgot to put them on.

The front wheel drive works fine for me. I've read complaints about the speed of the drive but I find it satisfactory. The instructions that come with the mower indicate that the speed of the drive can be adjusted if needed. Everything...
...

I just bought a brand new Craftsman 7.0 Torque, front wheel drive mower (model 37659).

This mower has a horizontal air intake making it impossible for any dust and dirt to get into the air intake when removing a dirty air filter. That's a big plus!

Note: My last Craftsman mower died because it had a vertical air intake. A pinch of dirt fell off the filter and into the air intake upon removal. Mower started spitting out gas and oil out of the air intake and clogging my air filter. Mechanic said pistons and cylinders were badly scratched and my engine was not repairable. Lesson learned: OIL ALL GREEN SLEEVE PRE FILTERS on vertical air intake mowers or risk engine damage.

I bought this mower to replace my 2003 Craftsman 7.0 Horsepower front wheel drive mower. I wanted equal or better power in a front wheel drive mower. I need front wheel drive because it is much easier to maneuver around trees, shrubs etc. Just lift up the front a little to make a turn!

After using for three weeks the grass catcher fell apart because the stitching came apart. The sales person gave me a replacement right away so I was okay with it. Then a few weeks later the glue on the plastic cover of the battery charger fell apart. I just re-glued it and it was okay. Then after about two months the electric start would no longer work. I found the problem to be that the terminal on the battery had corroded and broke off. After this I took it back for a replacement.
PROS: Does a great job of cutting the grass and picking up clippings. Padded handle is comfortable. Key start is great, when working. The hose attachment makes it easy to clean after each use.
CONS: Workmanship on grass catcher and charger was poor. Front wheel drive gets less effective as the grass catcher gets full. The placement of the battery under the housing is a problem. Although it is protected with a plastic shroud, grass clippings get into the battery area. They also used a sponge material to cushion......

So I went into Sears, and met with the Salesperson whom showed me a few fully loaded. I mentioned the magic words, 22in. self propelled, high wheels and we were in business........ I knew my husband wouldn't care forthe wash plug, but its an added you don't have to use. He complained about it not being plain enough, until he pulled the cord. After cutting the entire lawn, he did a 190..... He agrees, this is the best Craftsman Mower yet. It runs first pull, it has the front propelled belt drive and the safety of the bag attachment is awesome. I recommend no other Self Propelled for everyone. Now, we literally fight over who is going to do the lawns!!!
...

Pros: Can be adjusted to cut to a very low height. Easy to adjust height. Easy to start without the key. Dual handle. Bagging is very easy.
Cons: Self propel feature barely moves at times, especially while using the bagger. Could go a whole lot faster. Handle could be more comfortable. Grass clippings get in numerous cracks and crevices.

For anyone as confused about all the different mowers as I have been, what I discovered is that this model seems to have the same basic deck design as the Craftsman 37640, 37653, and 37654. This one, 37659, has a 7.0 engine, but otherwise appears to have identical features as the 37653 (6.75 engine, $30 less). The 37654 has a Honda 160cc engine.

I had read reviews about the front wheel drive feature not working well on some of the above models, but did not see that problem reviewed on this model, which was rated as an excellent model by Consumer Reports. Well, I looked under all of the above-listed models and I can tell you they look exactly the same......

Key starts immediately, variable speed is like an accelerator, especially like the last grass catcher bag which fills clear to the back and is so easy to detach and re-attach after ease of emptying it. Do wish the mower could be a little lighter, but have no suggestions for how that could be done. Being self-propelled really helps to over come the weight.

Very pleased after eight weeks use....
