this is great hand tool better than the electric ones because you get down force with it. its definetly old school and not to many of them on the market. it has the lifetime gaurante so if it breaks they'll repair it or replace it. i use the 3ib drilling hammer with it which is also available at sears but a ball pein hamer will work fine well really any hammer over a pound would work.
...

anyheck says "Does what others can't" about Craftsman Impact Driver

This is an excellent tool for working on motorcycles.

I had never had cause to need one until I had a friend with a 1970's Honda that has phillips drive fasteners everywhere in it.

Lots of ferrous fasteners in aluminum leads to galvanic corrosion sticking everywhere.

I attempted to use a small electric impact driver but it's impossible to hold the driver in hard enough to avoid cam-out and stripped screws.

This tool solves that in one go, as applying the hammer to it for the impact effect also drives the screw in harder at the same time.

I concur about using a dead-blow, although we did well with a normal soft-faced one, as we're just removing screws. Probably would want a metal faced hammer when you get into larger and more seriously stuck fasteners.

I wish that it did come with a case, although I found that a piece of PVC pipe with end caps makes a fully acceptable holder.

Also, the bits are not a common retail size (5/16" hex), and I had to grind one of them for us to remove a fastener...
...

I have a cheapy 3/8ths driver that you have to beat the heck out of before it starts it's twisting function. I tossed it for a better K-D one.
I find this 1/2 drive Sears tool is the same. Too much money for a tool that doesn't react until you've driven the Bolt, the Impact tool and the hammer through whatever you were working on.

K-d or Lisle...they know how to make these tools to work correctly...

This impact driver works well. If you work on any motorsport vehicle, they you will eventually need an impact driver. I have only two complaints about this one. It needs a case for itself and the bits to keep everything together or the bits get lost in the tool box. Also, the spring should be stronger. If you push too hard, it turns before you can hit it with a hammer. TIP, use a steel faced dead-blow hammer when using this tool. It works much better than a standard hammer.
...

Craftsman Impact Driver --

The Craftsman Impact Driver is a favorite tool of mine, when I have a stuborn phillips or flathead screw to break loose without damaging the head. It is a totally solid hand tool & quickly able to change bits. I come across rusted or corroded phillips or flat head screw tops in my shop regularly from small engine repair work or any items that have been left out in the weather. The Craftsman impact driver even works well when working on boat motors where screws are corroded in thier housings from lake or river water. You can also use the Craftsman impact driver to tighten these screws without damaging or stripping out the heads. If by chance that you forget which way to set the driver when working, the tool is marked as which way to set. your choices are tighten or loosen. Make sure you use a hammer that you can make a solid hit to drive the impact driver. Most times, it only takes one or two blows to break the screw loose. I can also use the Craftsman impact......

I had tried several options and several hours to remove a stripped lug nut from a recessed rim. I grabbed a six sided socket one size smaller than the nut. Whacked on the impact driver for 5 minutes with a 4 pound sledge. Nut removed! Did the same for another stripped nut on the same rim. Unfortunately, I'm sure this won't be the last time I'll use this product...
...

lightsaber says "The Craftsman Hand Impact Tool Set for phillips and flat screws" about Craftsman Impact Driver

The Craftsman Hand Impact Tool Set uses impact action to free or tighten rusted or frozen screws. The six piece hand impact set utilizes a 1/2 inch square drive to deliver a whopping 200 ft/lb of torque! Contents of the tool set include: 1/2 inch drive impact tool, chuck, #2, #3, #4 phillips bits, and 3/8 inch slotted bit.

The impact tool has foward and reverse direction capabilities. To operate the impact tool, you set the direction, apply twisting motion and strike the end of the tool with a hammer. This action causes very short movement of the fastener. Once the fastener is broken free you switch to a standard screw driver for final removal. This tool set is made in the USA and works well as designed. The only drawbacks appear to be the short stroke which doesn't turn the screw very much per hammer strike, and also an injection molded storage case is NOT included with the tool set.
...

As usual a wonderful Craftsmen product. I did break the adapter the first day I used it, I was using a 3lb. hammer though. The only other gripe I have is that it doesn't come with a case. For a product that comes with small parts not having a case seemed like it wasn't well thought out. I ended up just going to my local ************** and buying their cheapo brand that came with a case and using that case for my Craftsmen set.
...

I replaced my old one and reused the metal case that the old one came in. It also had a larger straight bit that this one didn't have and I bought a #1 Phillips bit (Sears Item #47631) for a total of 6 bits! This would be very complete if it came with a case and 6 bits. I would prefer a metal case because it is much more compact that a blow mold case.

...

I stripped out a few rusted phillips head screws that were holding my rotors onto the hubs of my car using a phillips head and a drill. Talked to a guy at Sears and he told me to pick one of these up. I thought it wouldn't work because I had already stripped out 2 screws out of 3. Yet he said give it a try and so I did. To my suprise once I figured out how to use it which took me a while, I was able to get the screws out without a problem, even the two stripped ones. It did take me a while to figure out how the tool works at first, but now I could remove screws with my eyes closed and other rusted bolts, as long as I hit the hammer on the head of course. So many uses for this in the long run. One nice thing about this is yes it does rotational impact, which is what my pneumatic impact gun does, but on top of it you get axial impact at the same time. Your impact gun doesn't do this unless you have a special one that gives axial force. This is especially necessary when removing...
...
