In doing so it damages the upper insulator, I have used many strut tools and I ended up tossing this one out.... It would interfere with my 1/2" impact wrench many times. I managed to replace all 4 shocks on my car, however, and am sure I will be able to do more. It's just a little frustrating for the price and does wear off some of the rubber on the top strut mount. The OTC spring compressor is almost twice as much but appears to have a better design (from looking at it online). I would recommend looking around some more or borrow one to test before buying.... The reason I gave 3 stars was that I wish the fingers that grab the spring were a bit longer. The short length of the fingers make it sometimes difficult to get a socket on the hex head of the bolt. If they were only a half inch longer, this would not be an issue at all. That being said, I successfully changed the strut mounts on a car where they had pulled through, which can be a bit of a challenge since the spring is free....
