I have four different battery maintainers. I bought this unit because it was the only one that included a cigarette lighter connection plug. It allows me to quickly hookup and disconnect to an interior connection and not have to raise the hood. As for performance it works about the same as the other units I routinely use on my boat and tractor. The unknown is how long it lasts. I have used it continuously for about three weeks to maintain the battery in my 2009 chevy 1 ton truck. It frequently sits for two to three weeeks with no use. The doors or opened frequently during the non-use period which along with the vehicle computer consumes battery power without recharging....

Bought two of these chagers to trickle charge two batteries over the winter. They both worked fine last winter. However, when they were hooked up this year, they both failed with the yellow light (labeled charging) blinking. I called customer service and was informed by them that this means the charger is in abort mode. This explanation conflicts with the instructions received with the charger. Evidently, customer service does not know what they are talking about. Prior reviews indicate this means the charger has failed. Took the chargers back to the store but the help was even less helpful then customer service. I intend to buy the Deltran Battery Charger which has a ten year warranty....

I have been using the Die Hard battery maintainers for decades and they all performed very well and lasted forever. HOWEVER, the design of the battery maintainer was changed to a switching type from a regulator type. Since then my experience with the new design has been dreadful. I purchased two of these about one year ago and both failed within six months. I attributed the failures to a nearby lightning strike and went and bought two more. Now, again about six months later, both of these are dead as doornails. I believe that there is a serious design flaw in the Die Hard maintainer and I strongly recommend against buying them. This is really too bad because the original regulator types where so good.
...

The Die Hard Battery Charger / maintainer is a great tool for your outdoor power equipment or boats that have a 6 VDC or 12 VDC battery. If you are storing the unit for out of season or have extended periods between operation, this is a great little charger to have. I just purchased this particular charger for my shop to maintain my battery for my electric jib crane, that runs off a regular 12 VDc heavy duty pickup truck battery. I don't have to worry about over charginr, as the little charger has over charge protection. I also use it to long charge ATV & sand buggy batteries. YOu have the option to use the 12 VDC at 2 amps or the 6 VDC at 4 amps. I like the multiple ends that come with the charger and I use the perminent eyed connectors to hook up the battery on my jib crane and I use the alligator clips to charge the ATVs or sand buggies, that I am working on.. I really like the quick connect that is inline and allows you to quickly change the ends that you need for whatever you are charging.......

I've had one of these devices for a year and it's been working fine. Recently I noticed a problem with my unit, which I will put in bold so others can easily find it (because it seems to be a fairly common problem)...

THE YELLOW AND GREEN LIGHTS ARE BOTH ON AT THE SAME TIME.

This indicates that the battery is completely charged (green light) but also that the charger is still in charging mode (yellow light). If this is the case, the battery will be damaged by over-charging.

Thankfully this item is covered by a 3 YEAR WARRANTY. I still had my original box and receipt, so I exchanged it for a new one and it's working normally.

So my advice to you is to monitor the lights on the front of the device and keep your receipt...just in case!
...

You can tell the difference by picking them up. The original workhorse is heavy and well built. The current one is very light and made of cheaper plastic. Save your money and buy a better unit

Bought a Diehard Battery Charger and had problems with it. When I bought the charger, the store was out on the shelf. While looking around the tool dept, I noticed a charger on the checkout desk. I asked the sales person about the charger and they said, "it's OK, it just needs to be put back on the shelf". I said OK and bought the charger. When I got home (35 miles away), the charger would not even light up, come on, do anything what so ever. I tried with the charger connected to the battery and disconnected and either way would not work. A month later, I returned the charger and the sales person was different. They returned the charger, gave me a "NEW" one this time, made sure that the defective charger was marked (so that it would not be sold to another customer) and apologized for any problems this may have caused, I was impressed. The charger is now charging my Harley (it works!) and hopefully will be a good one.
...

The small size fits nicely in my trunk. It's a life-saver for us on those freezing days when temps are around zero and my family member's cars just don't want to turn over. It's on the top of my must have for winter surrival list!
...

Easily installed on motorcycles with teh provided pigtails: this should be an emphasized feature. I found out about these maintainer on a motorcycle user group.

I bought this trickle charger for my motor home. Sometimes I don't start the engine for weeks. I liked this battery charger since I can charge the battery through the cigarette lighter and keep it inside. But it had an odor when operating (hot plastic?), so I have to plug it in outside and run the cables to the battery. I am hoping that the odor will go away after a few days. The unit is really sophisticated for $20. It charges/maintains the battery and detects and tries to correct sulfation. Wow!...
