During my strictly 'educational' use of the 8500 to monitor its reactions to CVS Pharmacy's automated doors, my study was repeatedly and consistently interrupted by law enforcement vehicles equipped with Radar devices. Frustrated, I tried to voice my concerns at the local police department, only to be informed that the Radar-guns were being used by cops to trap speeding drivers and issue them tickets. :-(

Till date, these WMTs (Weapons of Mass Taxation) have interfered with, and skewed the results of my ongoing research. :-)

I bought the Escort - Passport 8500 Radar Detector in September 2008 from BestBuy, with a 2-year Service Contract. It was the best deal I could find at the time, since 'deal' websites were offering a discount, but charging more for shipping.

The friendly associate asked me if I would like to 'upgrade' to an 8500 with a Blue LED display, instead of the standard Red, for 'only' $50. Strangely, he refused my counter-offer of beach-front property in Nevada. I don't recommend......

I think the Escort Passport Radar Detector is fantastic for any one that is on the road a lot. It can actually save you money if you are a speeder. It can warn you fast about a patrol officer in the area where you may be. It will be your best friend....

I have owned the Escort Passport 8500 radar detector for four years. During this time, it has proven to be an outstanding purchase. It is easily operated, the controls are relatively simple to use, and it works extremely well. I primarily use it to monitor the highways (really!) instead of purposefully speeding. It always gives an early alert, and very few false alarms. Escort has advertised the fact that it is upgradeable, however I have yet to see any offers from Escort in this arena. Nevertheless, this is one fine product. Although it is not cheap ($350 at the time I purchased mine), I would buy another one. This is actually the second Escort that I have owned....

This radar detector works wonderfully in all types of terrain. Mountains, Valley's, City and country. Most detectors will beep like crazy while you are travelig around city's givig you false alerts. This unit is the most accurate unitb that I have ever used. Worth the money. I borrowed a friends and now will save up to purchase my own. A must have for seasoned travelers!...

I purchased this dectector about 4 years ago. I've loved almost every minute of it's use ever since. I will definately purchase another one when this one is worn out!
