We live in a one floor, one bedroom apartment. Definitely not enough BTU's for a living room and kitchen. So we purchased the 12,000 BTU at K-Mart for $300. Good deal!! It cools our entire space of approx. 500 sq ft. We still have a small window a/c in bedroom that we run at night. We use the energy saver, so it is on and off daily throughout the day, we have had many days of 90 degree weather and our electric bill has only gone up about $15.00/month. It cools the area quickly. Not too difficult to install. I do agree about the plastic parts, but unfortunately, isn't everything made out of plastic these days? We did have a rattle, but it was just the front piece. It is convenient to clean the filter. VERY QUIET!!! You barely know it's on!! The remote is convenient and the timer is perfect, if you turn your a/c off at night in a particular room, as we do. You can set it to turn on whenever you wish. The...... I found cracks on the upper left curtain and the louvers are almost broke because of cheap plastic, the fresh air controller arm broke right out of the gate. Every piece of plastic is the cheapest I have seen EVER! On the other hand, I could barely hear the compressor run when I turned the unit on, I can't say as to cooling capability as today it is nice and cool outside. The noise levels are quite acceptable considering the previous unit I had which was a Haier 12,000 BTU unit. I bought the unit based on reviews I read on the Sears website about this model, I just hope it comes through for me better than the Haier unit....
