I purchased this unit after reading lots of reviews and trying to figure out the best size for my space. It is in a 450 sq ft guest house built inside of a metal shop building with all walls and ceilings fully insulated and sheet rocked. The unit defiantly can handle the space and keeps the area cool or cold (depending on how low I have it set). As for pros/cons:

Installation - Pretty straight forward. I have metal frame windows with brick ledges so the instructions were just a guideline. I did appreciate the slide out of the unit so all that is left is the shell, which makes it much easier to center and attach to the frame. The holdup legs on the back have plenty of strength; they just aren't very long so I had to cut some small pressurized wood blocks to get enough height for them to rest on. Overall it took under two hours to get it installed and running.

Operation - Easy to understand controls and fairly quiet. The controls are easy to use and the remote is a nice...
...

I bought this Sears 12,000 BTU A/C to replace a 39 year old GE that finally lost its Freon.

I bought it at our local Sears store and carried it home myself. My unit arrived in good condition. I got a neighbor to help move it from the car to the house and to do the final installation of the inner unit into the installation sleeve. Don't try to move this unit alone; it's not that heavy, but it's too wide for one person to lift.

I found that the hardware and instructions were adequate, but I'm much more of a DIYer than average. I found a few faults with this design.

The worst part of this job was sealing the installation to be reasonably air tight from inside to outside. We live in an area that gets hot in the summer and cold (below 0 F) in the winter, so I was appalled to find long 3/16" gaps at the top of the side curtains that are necessary to adjust the installation to a range of window openings. I spent a lot of time adding foam strips in various places to seal everything against air...
...

The air conditioner is great. Very powerful and resonably quite. The remote is very basic. I have a Sharp that automatically incrementally adjusts the fan speed and this does not exactly do that. The closest this comes is in energy saver mode where it shuts the fan off completely if it is not actually cooling. This is OK but the effect is that it comes every 3 minutes to see if it needs to cool (fan included) and then shuts down again. I can't imagine having it on this setting if I were trying to sleep. The only other option is to pick a speed and then it is just on all nite. So you can leave it on normal cooling with low, medium or high and then it is on all the time, or energy saver with low medium or high and it cycles on and off every three minutes. i just leave it on low and it is not bad. plenty of cooling power.

I ordered it online and picked an installation date and just expected it to happen. I ended up doing most of the work coordinating the delivery from UPS with the local...
...

We bought two of these about a week apart in early August. One went in my garage and the other in the mother-in-law's house.

If you're looking for something cheap that blows cold air and is reasonably quiet and efficient, then you'll be happy. For anything beyond that though, exercise caution and understand that you're getting (maybe) what you pay for.

First and foremost, these are made in China; they are cheap and they show it. They were not well boxed and both (from two different Sears locations) had dents and distortion in the outer cases. The grilles don't fit well and don't want to stay on, and the access door for the filter doesn't like to stay shut. As someone else mentioned the side curtains are a bear to install due to sloppy machining and lack of clearance to get to the screws. And, the holes in the bottom of the frame for the external supports that go beneath it on the windowsill are drilled such that they're pretty much useless. They did not line up with anything...
...

My 7 year old 10,000 BTU Panasonic AC was starting to die, and at the worst possible time, being it has been brutally hot this past week in NY. We loved the Panasonic, but they have gotten out of the AC business. I was on the hunt for a new AC, our reqiurements were; enough cooling power for 400 Sq Feet, which includes a kitchen area, Quiet, Energy Efficent, doesn't weigh a ton (Panasonic weighed 77 lbs), and doesn't cost a fortune. I looked at Friedrich - weighed over 100 lbs, and a host of others. Almost pulled the trigger on a Sharp AC, which no one sells locally, they are quiet as I have one in our bedroom. I came across this Kenmore 12,000 BTU unit Model 75121 at 79 lbs, only 2 lbs. heavier than the Panasonic (Not bad for an extra 2,000 BTU's). The reviews were pretty positive, so we decided to give it a go, knowing Sears would take it back if we were dissatisfied. Sears is within 2 miles of my home, so my wife and I popped over and purchased it. Unpacking it we noticed...
...

I bought this air conditioner for a variety of reasons; I've had 3 Kenmores in the past and all of them lasted at least 15 years each, all have worked great with NO service calls until they finally just wore out (actually the fan motor in all 3 cases) with minimal care on my part (kept the filter clean, oiled the motor every couple of years, removed them from the house and carefully sprayed the dirt and crud out the rear fin area with a garden hose every couple of years), and all were inexpensive compared to other manufacturers. I've seen some reviews that have complained about this unit being flimsy but if you have basic skills and take the time to adjust just a little for a good fit, everything is solid and fits together well. It's as solid as any other brand I've inspected and far less expensive than most. After I installed it in the preexisting opening (I built mine in about 12 years ago rather than having it stuck through a window) I plugged it in, turned it on, and within about...
...

Based on the ratings I expected a better product.
The first obstacle I encountered was the front cover. It would not clip on. I had to bend the metal housing in the clip areas so it would align properly with the front cover. It still did not attach very securely but so far it has not fallen off. Very Very cheap. Next I noticed there was no grill to cover the aluminum fins on the outside. No pictures in the book to verify. I called Sears and they said there was suppose to be a grill and they sent me one. It is nothing more than a wire grid with 2" x 3" holes in it. There is still a full view of the aluminum fins.
It looks very unfinished. In the energy saver mode the unit turns on and off constantly. It turns on for a few seconds then off for a short delay then back on and runs for a while. Once again I called Sears. After checking with her supervisor she came back and said this is normal. The AC turns on to sample the air temperature first then turns of and on again to cool the room. Maybe......

I bought a 10k btu unit a few years ago, and it's sad they never fixed this issue. The front grill is not the greatest in the world. The cord is so thick that it sorta prevents the front grill from attaching to the housing very well on the bottom corner. the other top snap areas don't grab very well either, and with the insulation around the opening just being slapped on instead of placed so it didn't interfere with the grill, they pop off until you get a screw in.
other than that, i love the unit and wished i didn't drop scissors onto the copper coil to release the refrigerant... the replacement unit (the 12k unit i got yesterday) has the same flimsy grill :(...

this was recommended by my friend who researched air conditioners for me. It has the highest rating for quiet running and overall features, I must admit that I was skeptical because it was cheaper than other ones that I looked at. But it is quiet, works efficiently and I have noticed that with the digital thermastat and the energy saver mode, it has made a significant dent in my electrical bill by $50.00....

I had a 12,000 Frigidaire in my apartment 530 sq ft. Since it was new it was so noisy that I had to put my TV on MAX to even hear it a little bit. Hard to sleep with as well because of noise. My across the hall neighbor recommended Sears/Kenmore and said he'd had them for years and they were quiet. I rolled the dice and purchased 1 12,000 multi room for my apartment and 1 for my new office. Both units installed easily and are extremely quiet. And guess what? They cool really really well. I am very happy with the (2) purchases. So now I'm Cool Pete!...

I purchased a 12,000 BTU multi-room unit last week and the plastic piece that forms the front grate would not snap into place. It is supposed to be held in place with one screw and four snaps, I would prefer if this were four screws and one to zero snaps. The housing seems flimsy especially after recieving shipment via UPS.
I would recommend the manufacturer ship a unit to themselves and try to assemble the per instructions.
On the plus side, I do have 90 days to figure out whether it gets shipped back to Sears or not....

The cooling is good on this unit, but am not entirely satisfied. First, the directional diverters (fins in the airstream) were not connected to the lever that allows for their control. However, regardless of the direction you attempt to aim the airstream, it always blows straight out of the unit. The advertised '4-way adjustable air direction control' is worthless. Secondly, the installation was unnecessarily difficult. The side louvers and the chassis supports need to be mounted to the chassis using self tapping screws. The screws are of poor design and do not engage into the holes making tapping difficult. I would suggest that anyone attempting to install these pre-tap every hole using one of the screws prior to mounting the louvers or supports....
