The elements and buttons are all part of the same unit, so when one thing breaks, everything breaks. Our Kenmore cooktop broke and had to be replaced 4 times over the course of its 5 year lifespan. So now it's five years later, our warrenty has run out, and we're stuck with a completely nonfunctioning cooktop, which will have to be completely replaced, whereas our first gas range cooktop is still working after 15 years in the house we left behind. Needless to say, this will be our last Kenmore.</p>... Sat, 28 May 2011 18:01:41 GMT http://www.mysears.com/Kenmore-30-in-Electric-Cooktop-with-Radiant-Elements--385207-review-425b4 JeffColleen 1 http://www.mysears.com/Kenmore-30-in-Electric-Cooktop-with-Radiant-Elements--385207-review-3ccf3 <p>Our builder installed this cooktop in 2005.   Spring 2006, the power element failed.  It was under warranty, so Sears sent a repair man to replace it, which he did.  He told me I needed to clean my cooktop, took a razor blade to it, and put multiple scratches on it.  Sears was great about replacing it...after a few months of complaining.   13-15 months later the power element on the "new" cooktop failed.  Never got around to having it replaced because the cost is outrageous.  Now the dual element is failing, and crackling sounds come from the knobs.  It will cost nearly $400 to replace the 2 elements and 2 swtiches in a cooktop that is only 3 years old.</p> <p>Yes, the knobs get hot, it is also poorly designed.  Hard to use large cookware because the 2 large burners are next to each other.  Can't put a large pan on the dual element or the pan melts the plastic knobs next to the burner. </p> <p>Not the best choice if you cook every day.  Invest in something better if you do.</p> <p> </p>... Since I wanted it to coordinate with my other appliances, especially the new stainless steel hood that I purchased at the same time, this seemed like the one to go with. I assumed that the trim would go all the way around the unit (zooming in on the photo was no help since no trim is visible). I'm pretty sure the sales associate told me that there was a thin strip all the way around. How disappointed I was to see that there is merely a one inch strip of chrome at the front of the cooktop only. I don't know if this was really worth an additional $50.00! You'll have to decide for yourself. This series was chosen as a Consumer Reports Best Buy in its 2006 Buying Guide and so far I haven't been disappointed with its performance. But for the additonal $50 you'd think the trim would be all the way around, even if it has to be narrower....
