These water heaters were redesigned a few years back. They feature more safety... but these changes in design cause more service calls and cold water. The closed/restricted air intake to the combustion chamber will begin to snuff out your pilot. It'll happen a couple times a month... before you know it, it'll be 3 times a day.

When your unit gets a few years old, and you start having this problem email me.

Hondaddy at Hondaddy dot com . They won't let me post my email properly.

I will send you some info on how to get it back right without having to pay for an unnecessary service call.

When it works right, it works well. But in a year or three it'll get finicky. But I have your back covered. Just let me know where to send the info.

I'm always glad to help, -tom2-
...

Installed this unit all most 2 years ago and have had no problems. This water heater replaced a Home Depot/GE junk water heater. The control keeps very accurate water temperature and I have not run out of hot water since. I like the control's ability to report diagnostic codes to help with possible troubleshooting. The only maintenance I have done is clean the air intake screen at the bottom as suggested in the owner's manual....

COLDERWATER says "93RD DAY FAILURE" about Kenmore 40 gal. Water Heater

This unit failed on Day 93. It is Sunday and a technician cannot arrive until late tomorrow.

This "self powered" electronic control apparently isn't fully realized technology. With no backup power to the controller I'm stuck with cold water with all the house lights on.

I'd avoid this technology for a few years and see if it evolves into something more reliable.

Save yourself some money and coldwater grief and buy a conventional controlled water heater. Setting it to 125 degrees will probably save you more than this "hydrosense controller" will....

I installed this water heater the day after Thanksgiving, the old one (Kenmore Power Miser 5) started leaking and being 21 years old it was time. Walking into Sears on Black Friday I was amazed at how fast the sales team and merchandise pick-up were. The installation went flawlessly. This water heater met all my expectations. I also replaced the water flex connectors, cold water shut off valve and gas flex. All the connection locations matched those of the old heater which made the job even smoother. The new water heater fired up on the first try and works great. I picked this model because of the 2 R-16 tank insulation, the simplicity of the temperature controls and the limited 12 year tank & parts warranty. Thanks Sears for another great product....
