I bought a similar model a few years ago and it is great. I can run it in my bedroom consistantly in the hot days of the summer and it barely changes our power bill at all. The one that I purchased also had a remote control which is a great feature if you get cold in the night. As always Kenmore makes resilient products for wonderful prices.
...

Our main A/C went out in the house and we needed something fast but not too expensive. It was towards the end of the summer and other Home improvement stores were only selling the combo units of heating and air. This model was easy to install (this being our first we were very surprised). It cooled off the main bedroom and then we used fans in a relay form down the hallway to cool off the rest of the house. Surprisingly it did work to make the rest of the house bearable without taking away much of the coolness from the main bedroom it was in.

I watched several videos on how to install a window air unit and took several ideas from each of them. There was too much light coming in from the plastic/vinyl side panels so we went to Ace and found some foil tape and reflective foil insulation. It helps keep the cold air in and the heat out. We were told in winter it would also be good to help keep the room warmer so we figured it was a win win situation. It may not look the prettiest but...
...

As air conditioners go, this has to be one of the better ones I've bought...and I've bought several in the last few years. I definitely recommend it over other brands like Haier, since they've put in automatic settings that make the air conditioner not cool when it is below 50 outside. I hate that...just because it is cool outside doesn't mean it is cool inside. I am also a fan of Kenmore products. My parents always bought Kenmore from the time I was very young, and they still buy them now. They are durable, well made, and work excellently. I've not found another brand that is better. This air conditioner is in a standard sized bedroom and cools that room perfectly. I like cool all the time, and it does just that. It is also not louder than any other brands I've purchased either...in fact it is quieter than most other brands. Bottom line: It is a great price, works perfectly, gives me icy cool air when I want it, and has a name I've counted on for years that hasn't let me down....

In terms of BTU's for the buck you can't beat it. I've had mine for about a month and I'm going to get 3 more instead of a 15,000BTU unit for 5 times as much. As far as durability I don't know yet, but the compressor is made by LG (you can see their logo on the sticker if you look through the vents) and they are highly rated for quality/durability. Yes, it does make noise. I don't have a problem with it. It's not as loud as some other reviewers make it out to be (they make it seem like it's as loud as a jet engine). If you need a really quiet unit look elsewhere, otherwise I'd say go for it. Oh, and when I looked at in in the store, it was side-by-side with the other 5000BTU/99USD unit (the Frigidaire). The Frigidaire fan was noisier and moved less air.
...

Great A/C. Bought because our central A/C went on the fritz. They're temporary, but have already run well to cool bedrooms (I bought 2 of these) the last several weeks. I have storm windows and used a 2x4 plus 1/4" plywood as base. My full 35" windows have maxed out the side panels, but they did cover! Well packed, straightforward home installation.

The fan and compressor on high are noticeable, like white noise on the television with the volume set midway. You can still hear and have conversations, even phone calls but its noticeable. Not bad for sleeping though.

The weather has already produced a week over 90 degrees and we're still staying cool.

**************** rated highly and I agree.
...

Reviews were pretty accurate concerning this air conditioner. It does rattle somewhat, but a little tape will take care of that. I found this item to be very affordable, easy to install (it takes no time to put it in), and easy to operate. I'm not a stickler about where the vents direct the air as long as it cools the room and this unit actually cools off a couple of rooms. Between this unit and another larger unit, I am able to cool off my whole apartment and I don't have to wait forever to feel the cooler air.

Anyone that may be looking for more than what this air conditioner does, should be willing to spend more than the $99 it costs; I feel that it is perfect for my child's room and worth much more than I spent on it.
...

I needed a small AC for a room in which my computer and a few peripherals are located. This was just the ticket, and a great bargain too. The only thing I found exasperating was the directions. They're sparse and need to be carefully read more than once. There are no explanations about the expandable side curtains. There's no explanation on how to put the evaporation drain pipe into the unit frame. It merely says be sure to insert it; not there is a rubber washer on part so you must exert a good deal of pressure on the drain pipe while screwing it into the base pan bottom. Otherwise, the unit is just right for my use. Too early to tell about motor or condenser noise, but since I don't sleep in the room, no problem. So far, I'm pleased. Even if it only lasts for the summer and fall, it's inexpensive enough to replace it, plus there's awlays the warranty (1 year). Meanwhile, I'm cool in my "computer room".
...

I purchased this unit to give my home two 5000 btu air conditioners. This unit worked properly, but the cooling efficiency was definitely 25% less when compared to my now four year old $99 Hampton Bay unit. Also, this unit is significantly louder. The low fan setting is tolerable leave the room if you want it on high. Even on low, if you are in the same room you will have to raise your voice when the compressor kicks on. The fan is also not well balanced and creates significant vibration and some additional white noise. I would not recommend this unit, at any speed, for your bedroom as it will disrupt your sleep. You are better off finding a better constructed unit at the same price.
...

I'm happy with this sucker.

I bought the Kenmore 5000 BTU air-conditioner last week because it was affordable, and light enough that I could carry it home and install it myself (it's about 25ish pounds, but I only had to walk a couple blocks).

After a particularly miserably hot day in my apartment, I originally intended only to buy a better fan; after checking several stores though, most of the decent ones were coming up around $50-$75. I just figured, if I was going to have to spend a chunk of change, why not get something that would actually cool the air instead of just wafting the gross hot soupiness of the summertime in my face?

It's not the coldest I've ever been, but I've been keeping that piece on its frostiest setting and I no longer sweat every time I think too hard. This one also doesn't seem to be as loud as some other reviewers' (especially compared to the radiators in my building during the winter), and I haven't experienced any weird superfluous sounds yet, so... bonus. ...
...

Bought this product after realizing my apartment doesn't have air conditioning. Was able to install by myself, never installed a unit before, in about 20min or so. Not nearly as noisy as I expected. Just a steady noise, can easily drown it out in less than 5 minutes. Says it's only really good for 100sqft. My room is 138sqft, cools within 20min, including the hallway and bathroom. Bought another for the living room after liking so much. It also reaches the kitchen. Incredibly easy to use, very lightweight, so I'm not worried about it falling or tilting. Definitely good for the money. I would recommend this to anyone, especially college students staying on campuses over the summer. Comes with everything you'll need to install, the cord is also very long, didn't need an extension cord. Only thing i would like differently is I wish the air pushed more ouward instead of angled up. But that's just because i have curtains and the Air gets trapped. (haven't done anything to keep the curtains...
...

This air conditioner is exactly what I needed for my bedroom. My bedroom is on the west side of my old ( meaning little to no insulation) apartment and it catches the sun from noon until sunset. I live in West Texas and we have very, very hot summers. I would go to bed some nights and my bedroom would be 80 degrees and I cannot sleep in heat. By putting this little unit in my bedroom, the temp is now around 70 degrees at night, without turning the big unit down to 60.

I do want to warn you that it is a little harder to install than it looks. It didn't quite fit my window, but a little duct tape and some heavy duty plastic fixed that.

It is not noisy and it only takes a short time to cool the room down, so I do not have to run it all day. I only use it at night and on days I am working in the room. It was well worth it for me.
...

The big mistake that I made is that I completely overlooked that Kenmore does not claim this air conditioner is quiet. It claims that it is powerful which is true.

But its in a bad way when it comes to sleeping. When you have it set to fan only low speed this thing is louder than my table fan on high!!! It is impossible to sleep through. I'm talking about wearing earplugs and earmuffs at same time and I can barely do it. Without earplugs it is just absoulutely impossible to sleep through.

Yes most airconditioners make noise. But they usually make nice smoothing noise that you can sleep in. This one makes this awful hirling noise that is constant and never goes away even in the fan only mode. Then once you put it on cool and the compressor kicks in it is so loud and terrible I can't even beilieve there aloud to sell this. But yeah I'm guessing because they claim it to be Powerful not Quiet.

Like I was outside listening to my neihbors there was loud but it was nice and soothing. The Kenmore...
...

It was simple to install, doesn't seem - to me - to be noisy like some stated but it is definitely for really small rooms only.
I have a F.R.O.G. that originally had a AC/heating unit in one that went out and since I didn't have $2K to replace it, decided on this unit. It does cool the room but it's not ice cold like the bigger unit but that's to be expected. It keeps the room cool enough that the stifling southern heat and humidity is tolerable. For the money, it's worth it. If you have a room bigger than the average size bathroom, I'd spring for a larger unit cuz this one won't cool it properly.
...

We purchased this unit last summer for use in our horse trailer. We used it in the window as it was light weight and easy to install or remove in minutes. It ran easily with our generator and was a lot less expensive than the ceiling heat/air units for trailers. Kept us cool on hot days and nights for about 4 weekend trips.
...

naota-dx3 says "New age junk" about Kenmore 5,000 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner

I had this same model about 6 years back, it worked for 5-6 years, and is the 1st air conditioner to last me over a year. When the unit's fan motor went out. I made up my mind to buy the same model, i got my new one on 01/26/10, when unboxing the first thing i noticed, was the once metal parts and brackets are now plastic. Witch is no big deal, most things today are made of more and more plastic, i installed the unit in my window. It is now 03/10/10, and i have only used the unit 4 to 5 times, with no longer then 8hour runs or less each time. And the fan motor died! that's less then 3 mouths of use. i plan on taking it back later today to get a full refund, and just buy a cheap ******** model.

p.s. to fix the noisy front grid, place a peace of tape on each side of the grid as to hold it to the unit.
...
