slckp says "Kenmore scores again with quiet, efficient air conditioner" about Kenmore 5,300 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner

I researched all kinds of brands before finally purchasing my Kenmore room air conditioner for my bedroom. In Utah, with the dry heat, swamp coolers rule. But I needed a room air conditioner where my swamp cooler doesn't reach. I was concerned with energy efficiency and quietness besides the obvious cooling of the room. My master bedroom is 90 sq feet and this thing does the everything I wanted it to do and more. In fact, it cools the room down within minutes of my arriving home from work. I sleep uninterrupted by the machine. I would recommend this to anyone looking for such an item up to 150 sq. ft. as the package suggests. Next year I plan on buying the same unit for my family room in the basement which is about 100 sq. ft.
...

I see some reviews that say the A/C is loud and some say it is quiet. Well, maybe there are manufacturing variances because my two-week old unit is LOUD! And it's not just that it's fan-blower loud. The compressor pulsates loudly, the condensor fan pulsates and grinds like it's going to fly apart any minute, the front grill rattles intermittently - it's insane! I have another 6000 BTU (not much larger) Kenmore A/C that I bought 4 years ago and it's as quiet as can be. But not my new one, it's so loud you can clearly hear it in the next room.

On the pro side, it was cheap and easy to install. But I'll probably take it back.

Had to get a new A/C when our old one quit in 100+ weather. This unit is so quiet and gets the room cool in half the time our old one did! Love that the air can be directed upwards or wherever you want so that it's not blasting at someone directly if that's not wanted.
...

In a 10'x14' room with 6 desktop computers, a 26" TV, 2 DVD recorders, a stereo amp and a VHS player, this A/C will easily keep the room at 66 degrees even with strong summer sun streaming in the south window!!! I keep the place like a meat locker. I don't know how low it will go. I've never tried but it seems to just cruise at 66 degeres with power to spare.

I am on my 3rd year with this A/C. It is showing NO signs of slowing down, not cooling as much, needing a freon charge, nothing. As long as you keep the REUSABLE, REPLACABLE, WASHABLE filter clean it cools as good as the day I bought it.

The inside fan is a bit noisy, but I don't think they could do anything about this and still have such a small unit blow so much air. And anyway, if you want, you can turn the fan on low and set power saver mode. Then when the exact temp is reached, the whole unit turns off completely. Then about every 5-10 min the fan comes on very quiet to sample the air temp until it turns back on again....
...

I like this A/C window unit a lot for it's price and features. I paid about $150 and this unit has an energy saving feature and is Energy Star rated. It is neither loud nor quiet - it sounds about the same as a 20" box fan. It is not the cheapest unit - there was one for $99 - but I liked this better for the style and the energy saving feature. I have two upstairs attic type rooms in an old house. There is minimal insulation in the ceiling and walls - if any at all.

I put this unit in the smaller room. The room faces west so it gets the full brunt of afternoon sun. The first day I didn't turn it on until after the sun went down. The room was very hot - 90 degrees. Within an hour running it on high at 72 degrees with the door closed the room had cooled down to the mid 70s. The second day I turned it on around midday before it was really hot out. I ran it all day along with another unit in the other upstairs room and both doors open. As the sun moved to the west the unit had more trouble...
...

A great basic air conditioner at a good price. I had to replace an older a/c that died (it was a kemore also - lasted 14 years!). I have another of this unit that is several years old and haven't had any problems with it. Not a fancy unit (although it does have a remote)- but runs fairly quietly and keeps the room cool. It's also energy star complaint so qualified for a rebate from the electric company.

Installation was easy - but watch out for the cooling fins on the back - they are very sharp and draw blood easily.
...

This a/c was very easy to install, so easy that we tried making it more difficult than it was. It is very quiet. I am a light sleeper and it doesn't wake me ever. It's small but cools the large living room and kitchen quickly. For the price I like the many features on it such as the energy save mode, timer for shut off and start up, adjustable fan direction. I like that the air filter is washable but would have liked to have a better air filter for allergen/ dust.

I didn't see the need for a remote but ends up being really nice in the middle of the night to adjust temperature without getting up.

for the affordable price you really couldn't get more for your money!
...

We live in a decent size 2 bdrm apartment and have a built in wall AC unit in our living room which normally cools the whole place. We purchased this unit for our bedroom as a backup for the unusually hot days we have had already during May and June. Ironically, right after we bought the Kenmore window unit our built in wall AC unit in the living room finally killed over after several years. So, we had to order a new one since they are a speical size and cannot be purchased at any store. We have to wait 2 weeks for it. So, for now we are surviving with only this Kenmore single room AC unit and it is cooling our whole place along with a fan in each room! And we have had 90 degree days. I think it deserves a high rating since we are running it day and night at the coolest setting possible (60 degrees) and it is running very well and keeping our whole place cool enough until our wall unit is ready to be installed in the living room.

We will continue using this window unit...
...

This is a great, green air conditioner. It is not very expensive, and completely worth the price. It has a wonderful energy star rating. It cools very well. Even though my room is next to a room with no air conditioner, my room is cold. The settings are decent, with choices between fan, cool and energy saver. I love the adjustabel air flow. The air can be directed up or down, and side ways. The sideways adjustment is divided. Half of the air can be directed on way (straight, left or right) and the other half of the vent can be turned to the same or completely different direction. Remote control works well. It comes with batteries and a holder to mount it on the wall or wherever. The remote can still be removed from the holder. Easy to access and clean filter. Installation was fine, as easy as can be for a window air conditioner in a second floor window. Comes with all hardware, screw driver needed. Come with side accordian panels. Fits securely, safe for pets or children.
...

It is very loud and can be heard in another room. When the compressor comes on, it sounds like a truck. The energy saver feature is useless. It causes the AC to come on/off every 3-5 minutes, which is so annoying and sleep disturbing. It does not cool well either. We had the unit on all night with the temperature set at 73 degrees. Our small bedroom did not cool up beyond 79 degrees. This is going back to Sears. I do not recommend that anyone waste their time, money and energy on this awful unit.
...

I don't ordinarily follow-up on unsatisfactory purchases, but in this case I truly felt the need to do so. I recently purchased the Kenmore 5,300 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner, model# 75051 to replace an a/c I had had for several years prior. The unit I had had was smaller than this new one, but cooled 100 times better than this one. I have to keep the thermostat all the way down to it's lowest setting - 60 degrees - in order to cool just my bedroom down to a livable temperature - and we're not even in the heart of summer yet! My old a/c even managed to cool down a good portion of the rest of my apartment but I can certainly not expect that from this unit when it can barely cool down the bedroom. In addition, the amount of noise coming from this thing is atrocious! Unfortunately, I did not install it immediately after purchasing it and I missed out on the time period I had to return it to Sears otherwise I definitely would have done so. It peeves me to no end that I am...
...
