I own an older version of the large Kenmore air purifier, which has worked well for years, and I wanted to buy another. I see that this now has an ionizer, which is bad for asthma (the reason I want a second one in the first place).

I wish the older model without the ionizer was still available. This one will make my asthma worse, not hellp it.
...

VirginiaConsumer says "Worked Great - Broke Fast" about Kenmore Electrostatic Air Cleaner

I am really torn writing about this. The unit worked great without filter changing required. But, it broke within weeks of the warranty running out. I took it into the Sears repair center and was told (a week later) that the product could not be repaired because the unit was no longer made by Sears - so I had them toss it rather than bring the broken appliance home.

A year+ later, I saw the same model for sale in a Sears store - so the repair center's story was not true.

Despite this, I just bought the same unit again on sale and bought the extended replacement guarantee.

We run the unit all the time and the savings in filter replacements (not required) seems to make it a good bet.

But, I would not buy the unit at full price -- and I would not buy the unit without getting the longest replacement deal available.
...

This unit performed flawlessly for the first 12 months. I cleaned the pre-filter (black mesh) with my kitchen faucet sprayer and inner aluminum electrostatic unit as well in the dishwasher once each month during this timeframe as well. Then all of a sudden the control panel started to flicker and it would shut off. Hmmm I then washed both filters thoroughly and the interior one in my dishwasher and then dried them both which is essential and it ran for another two days and it failed and did the same thing with the control panel flickering and shut off again. I took the interior electrostatic filter to my work which has a commercial dishwasher that gets to 165 degrees and washed the interior filter. The unit then ran one week and did then stopped doing the same thing. I than put the electrostatic filter under the microscope and saw that even the hot dishwasher left behind fine black dust on all surfaces and especially the electrostatic wires which are attached with springs on the sides....
...

Great unit but very overpriced for a unit that Kenmore will not repair. My LCD screen is disolving (clearly a manufacturing defect) and Kenmore refuses to help me. I spoke to a senior level person who continued to tell me to call the parts department. The only available parts for this unit are the filters. period. Very upsetting since it's just past it's waranty and Kemore pretty much stated to just buy a new one....

ReviewerMom says "Great clean air, and no filters to buy--ever!" about Kenmore Electrostatic Air Cleaner

This is the best air purifier we've ever owned, worth every penny. With no need to replace the filter--ever--it's well worth paying extra for.

Pros: cleans air better than any air purifier I know of, and it seems to reduce allergens. We sneeze and cough a lot less during pollen season with this machine working. The wheels make it easy to take from room to room. It's big, so it can clean the air in a fairly big room. It's economical, because it doesn't require expensive replaceable filters. It includes a timer, so you can run it for only a few hours, if you like. Leaves the room smelling fresh and clean. Fairly quiet on the lower settings. The light filter can be cleaned with a brush, while the heavier metal filter can be washed and dried in the shower. We've never had to use harsh detergents on ours.

Cons: it can be noisy on the highest setting. The blue lights on the front can be annoying if you have it on in the bedroom while you're trying to sleep. It's not the most attractive thing,...
...

I read the awesome reviews at **************** and thought I had to get this unit. It was a little pricey but works great until you have to clean it. I followed the directions and put it in the dishwasher and dried it off along with the pre-filter and now i have to reset the unit every 30 to 40 minutes because the check filter light starts blinking and shuts the unit off. I took it apart and cleaned the whole unit and put it back together and still the same thing.. Like I said when its working it is awesome but keeping it working is a huge hassle.
...

This is an excellent air cleaner that I ever own. However, the disappointment was that, the air cleaner becomes unstable and "clean filter" begins to blink. Even I tried to clean and replaced a new cell collector, it still the same. I did pressed the button and it does run for 15 mins, then it stopped again. I took it to Sears for repair. Unfortunately, they sent to the repair center and returned back 3 weeks after, with a reason "part is unavailable" without specified the problem caused the air cleaner isn't working properly. The service person at Sears said this is a discontinue product. If that is true, how come Sears still sell this product at the higher price?? I don't understand here..
...

We have owned this air cleaner for well over 2 years and have had absolutely no problems. We have ran the unit 10-12 hours every day and have cleaned according to the manual numerous times using the dishwasher method and have experienced none of the problems some of the other posters have stated. I recommended this unit to my sister, who has had her unit for over a year and has experienced no problems. And just this morning my Dad went to purchase him one. My sister and I LOVE that we do not have to purchase expensive throw-away filters that cost a fortune, add to the landfill and after a while the company comes out with new models and new model filters and it becomes impossible to find replacement filters, so we are left with an air purifer with no replacement filter. This unit in my families opinion is worth every penny.
...

I have had this unit for over a year, and I was upset, as many reviewers were, when it came time to clean the cell for the first time. My first attempt to clean the cell was a failure because the next day after letting it dry, I put it back in, and the unit went off after 1 hour and said check cell. I read through the other reviews on here, and I found one that suggested using a cleaning product you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot called GREASED LIGHTNING. I put the cell in my bath tub dry, sprayed about 1/4 of the bottle of Greased Lightning into the tops of the blades of the cell (I could tell after a minute it was working since the foam dripping out of the cell was very dirty). I let the foam drip out for about 10 minutes and then rinsed the unit with the hot water from the shower along with some splashes of boiling water I had heated on the stove. The unit now works flawlessly once again, and the cell seem to be almost as clean as when it was new.

In summary, this is...

...

Purchased this unit back in 02/09 despite a couple of nay-sayer reviews. I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. Surely as the highest price unit that sears carried at the time it must out-perform the others. We have sinced learned from an allergen and mold remediation specialist that the True Hepa filters are the absolute best at removing small particulate from the air. The new unit seemed to move alot of air and made the room smell pretty but compared to our previous 7 year old True Hepa and charcoal prefilter unit never seemed to collect as much dust and lint. Although the "Check Filter" light came on about every 3 months the prefilter and metal gratings never really looked that dirty. We followed the dishwasher washing directions from the manual and after the 3rd cleaning (9 months old now) the unit would only run about 20-30 minutes and then the "Check Filter" would light up again and the unit would stop working. We discussed our concerns with the department...
...

Product worked great for two years...absolutely loved it, it made the air so fresh and clean. We took care of it exactly as our operators manual instructed. Two years and two months later (2 months after my extended warranty ended) it developed some kind of short and stopped working. When I purposely bought what I thought was a Sears top of the line product and spent over $400 (with the extended warranty) I expected to have a product with, at a very minimum, five year life span. What do I do with this piece of junk now? Fix it? Costs almost as much to fix it as it is to buy a new one. Throw it away? Our landfills are overflowing with our throw-away-societal junk and Kenmore is one of the guiltiest junk producers of all (Have a Kenmore dryer less than 3 yrs old already giving me trouble). Don't waste your money.
...

Have had my unit a little over 3 months now. Worked great first time around (prior to 1st cleaning). Air smelled wonderful. However, after my first cleaning of the pre-filter and cell it has not worked properly since. Cleaned according to instructions and I must say it is not an easy process. Requires at least 140 degree water to clean and how many homes have their water heaters set that high? Even so, the metal blades still looked like they were only partially clean. And you can't touch the blades with anything at all to try to clean them, so basically, they just can't be cleaned properly. Put the cleaned and dried filters back in the unit and the unit has not stayed on since. At most, it will run about 8 hours and then shut off with the check cell button flashing. I guess I'm lucky I get 8 hours right now because from what I'm reading, this problem will get worse with time. What a waste of money. Where were these reviews when I first looked at this product? ...
...

...because it WILL die on you. Suddenly after a year (when the warranty expires), your unit will most likely start turning off after about 20-40 minutes. The indicator screen will tell you that you have to "Clean Cell Now!" And no matter how well you clean it, the unit will keep shutting off.

It is an electrical component failure on the unit's system board -- and it will have to be replaced.

Another reviewer stated they can no longer get parts for this unit. Then who's building them now? Has it taken three years for them to get rid of old stock???

So the extended warranty will most likely just get you another replacement unit. Then you can use that one for a little over a year until IT dies, and then you basically will repeat the process -- until your extended warranty expires.

Shame on Sears for buying these units from China and slapping the beloved Kenmore name on them. They don't deserve it!
...

Kenmore Electrostatic Air Cleaner is the best. I read the reviews. The naysayers need to read the instructions. The smell is ozone, and it will build up if you leave it on. Cancel the ionizer after 10 minutes. The unit is very effective without the negative ion generator. I no longer have to dust my house every week. I dust about every 6 weeks and hardly find anything. These units are so good I recommend them to my clients in Atlanta. We have a lot of soot particulate and have 4 months of smog in the summer. During the Forest Fires in South Georgia our city was covered in smoke. Inside my home was fresh as a daisy.
