I really loved this vacuum while it worked ~ 2 years I think. Today the beater bar stopped. The reset button wasn't popped, but I tried that anyway. I then called in and the prognosis is that the motor for beater bar is dead. $80 to fix. Or I can just buy a new cheap vacuum for under $100. I think I'll go that route and use this as a backup for wand or floor cleaning. Again, it was good, but just didn't last long. So much for recommendations of the leading consumer magazines. I've had Rainbow, Kirby, Hoover, Sear canister and this one and I have found that price really is no indication of performance nor longevity. I'm going with cheap (under $100) from now on. They ALL work great at first. At least I won't be as disappointed if the cheap ones don't last.

I particularly enjoy the ease in swtiching from carpet to bare floors. The vacuum is light enough to push easily and the attachments work well and store securely on the vacuum. We have a dog in the house and the machine easily takes care of pet hair. I do have to use the attachments along the wall as it doesn't edge as well as I would like. I also don't feel it works as well on bare floors as on carpets. Overall, I am very happy with the performance, so much so that I also purchased a Kenmore steam floor cleaner....

I have owned this vacuum for several years. I really like the fact that it is quiet enough to use while the family watches TV. I also really love the dirt sensor. It lets you know when you are finished vacuuming a certain area. I only wish it had been around when my carpet was new. I like all the different settings so I can also use it on my hard floors and throw rugs. This vacuum is definitely a good investment.

this vacuum has great suction, a variety of tools attached which is very convenient and I love the intelli clean feature that tells you when all the dirt is gone. The only criticism I have is that it is kind of heavy to carry up and down the stairs....

We just had a fire in our home and it was determined by a forensic team that this vacuum was the cause. I have had it for 3 years and as time as gone on, it has become harder and harder to push. It cleaned well though and I loved the sensor system. I used it as normal this past Sunday and put it away in my utility room. I closed the door and a few mins later, there was smoke coming from the door. I opened the door only to find the whole room in flames and smoke. I have 3 children in my house! My daughter who is 3 mths old was in her swing right out side the door to the utility room! Luckily every one was safe, but I am at a loss of this. It wasn't even pluged into the wall.. BEWARE! If you have one, go get it serviced to ensure that there are no issues with yours.

I have a three bedroom home with medium high carpet and this vacuum does a good job of cleaning it. Also, it is not a loud as most vacuums are which for me is a good feature.

I don't recommend this vacuum if you have a family. It keeps clogging on me and I have to go over the carpet and pick up things like dirt and very small bits of wood around our fireplace. I have small children and it's not always possible to pick up everything especially items that find their way under beds that I don't see. My old vacuum didn't mind this stuff.

I am a Sears loyalist and love getting my appliances here but I won't get another Kenmore.

On Nov. 20.2007 I purchased a Kenmore Progressive Upright Vacuum cleaner and around April 10, 2010 I noticed a burning odor. After inspection I found the odor coming from the vacuum cleaner and noticed that the motor was emitting a visible electric current or arching. The repair center stated that the motor burned out. It was not worth it to repair it. Do not buy this even if it is Consumer Reports ********.

My wife and I bought this 3.5 years ago and it still runs like new. We've had roommates use it and bought one after we moved into our home. The Inteli-Clean system actually works, however I don't have the patience to wait until the light goes green for pristine.

I bought my Sears Progressive Vacuum Cleaner over a year ago. I really think the test of time is one of the best gauges for any review. I'll admit, the vacuum is heavy but I also have the assurance of good workmanship. Its not so heavy that I can't use it nor is it cumbersome. Ok, one year and I have had absolutely no problems with any parts. Its still working splendidly. There are enough tools included that it really doesn't bother me to use one to get behind fixtures, close to edges, and I love the telescopic wand for blinds and ceilings. I use the small handi-mate Jr for steps and furniture. What I am totally amazed about is how much dirt the vacuum picks up. When I first bought the vacuum, I wasn't sure it was really doing any thing. It took forever for the orange lights to turn green. I certainly got quite the work-out the first few days. I even began to wonder if the lights were malfunctioning. When I checked the bag, I couldn't believe how full it was. I knew the vacuum was...

I purchased this vacuum 2 years ago and have hated it ever since. Within a few months the furniture attachment was broken. This was followed soon by the small piece of plastic that holds the hose and tools attachment together. Now every time I use the tools attachment for my wood floor it disconnects and falls apart. Now after only 2 years it is losing its suction strength. We have examined the entire machine looking for an explanation but have found none.

I don't know how this machine got so highly rated. It doesn't edge from either side of the machine. It's horrible on bare floors. The attachments seem to be just for show.

I was excited about this vacuum, because it had received such good ratings everywhere I looked. Apparently, I got a real lemon. The first couple of times I used it, it worked wonderfully, and got the carpets really clean. However, it quickly began making a loud roaring noise, and had no suction through the floor brush. We took it in for service, and they pronounced it fixed. The roaring was gone, but still weak suction. The tools worked fine, but the main floor vacuum didn't pick anything up, and blew dust out the sides all over. We returned it for service 3 more times, and each time they assured us there was nothing wrong with a vacuum that didn't suck up any dirt. FInally gave up after 2 years, and bought a Dyson. Hope we have better luck with this one!

This is the heaviest vacuum I have ever used. It works if you go over the same spot 10 times or more. I've owed it less than 6 months and now it is broken. The wand falls out and drags on the floor while vacuuming. Carrying it up stairs is like moving a 10 ton elephant. If you are looking for a good reliable vacuum, keep on looking, this is NOT it.

My mother in law gave me this vaccum as a bridal shower gift; and.. I LOVE IT! we just moved into a new house; that has carpet, vinyl floors and some tiles as well. I have no problems going from surface to surface and especially like the smart option. It changes it power itself; and tells you if the floor is dirt free or not; which is handy when your hubby runs it!!!! the only thing I dont like so much is that the one attachment that I use all of the time- bare floor wand- doesn't attach to the vaccum... you have to store it seperately. No problems so far. It is sort of on the heavy side; but seems well built.

The front wheels stick out far enough to prevent being able to vacuum along the lower edge of a wall, which means if you want to vacuum properly, you'll be down on your hands and knees using attachments connected to the hose to finish off what the vacuum cleaner doesn't do on its own. Oh, and the attachments? Well, there is no way to actually keep them attached to the hose short of using some duct tape. They are either continually falling off, or even worse, FLYING off in all directions. Totally unacceptable, and a big step backwards from the last vacuum cleaner I purchased.

The Handi-Mate Jr. isn't very handy at all. It doesn't take much effort to stop the brush from turning, since it's operated by air suction only. While you're not supposed to stick a finger in the device while the vacuum cleaner is running, I did so quite a few times just to see how easy it is to stop the brush from turning at all. It's VERY easy. Don't worry about injuring a finger unless you suffer...

I bought an older version of this model a few years ago...I had gotten very sick from vacuuming the "love bugs" that swarm twice a year in Florida. I'm from Indiana (and back home for good now) and I used my brother's old Hoover to vacuum some of the bugs that got in the door as you went in or out, and the ones on the porch. The blow-out on the old Hoover was terrible and I was in respiratory distress by that evening. I got a pneumonia-like crud from breathing the toxic fumes from those bugs. My next paycheck went for a new vacuum and I picked this Kenmore Progressive. It has been great...the hepa filters are a little pricey but definitely worth it. It's easy maneuvering and has very good suction. My only complaint is that when having to use attachments the hose is awkwardly short. I've had it 5 years now tho and it's still going strong. I was extremely happy with this vacuum the day I brought it home...and I still am...it's a healthy investment.

Five stars. Affordable. But more importantly, a fantastic vacuum.

My husband just received a bone marrow transplant, and it is uber-important to clean the carpet of all mold spores, dust, etc. I researched vacuums for no less than 10 - 15 hours, and I am very happy with my choice. It sucks very hard, and in fact -- we had to change the bag after our first use! We are renting an apartment near my husband's treatment center, and it has old, dirty carpet. You should have seen how great a job this vacuum did on the old, deep pile/shag carpet! His life depends on cleanliness right now, and I feel very good that this vacuum is the best out there. Cons: It is a bit heavy; bags are expensive; only has a few "tools" for cleaning upholstery, curtains. Pros: great suction; HEPA filters; good seals prevent dust leakage; dirt/particle sensor actually works!

We had new carpet installed, so we started researching vacuum cleaners. I was tired of the messy bagless one I had. With 3 dogs, you know it got a work out. I was looking for a quality product, fair price (you get what you pay for with the cheaper priced ones). This Kenmore model lives up to it's product description. Much quieter than my other one, powerful suction, and has a HEPA bag (think allergy deterrent). I especially like the extended handle and floor brush, to clean the bare floors. It almost glides across the new carpets, and really does a superb job. Now I almost enjoy vacuuming... Help me :)...
