ok, at first I was impressed. Bought it 2 years ago, but didn't buy extended warranty! Wrong choice. It began to have a funny smell, still worked ok but thought it might just need to be serviced. Took the sweeper to Sears repair department where I bought the sweeper. Paid the $30.00 for the "diagnositic test". Was told that would apply to any repair balance. I thought ok just a service job, maybe a few new filters, no problem. Let me take a few minutes to say, that this sweeper was on the average used once a week. All the kids have moved out, not much of a "high traffic" home. Maybe changed the bags 4-5 times in 2 years? Well was I suprised when they called and told me it needed a NEW MOTOR, are you kidding after only 2 years??? Come on, that sweeper cost me $150.00 a year to use and after 2 years already replacing the motor at the cost of$120.00 bucks plus my diagnostic charge, no thanks I will go to ******** and spend $90.00 on a dirt devil that has a 3 year......

lisa202 says "this vacuum is great for a one floor house with no area rugs" about Kenmore Progressive Upright Vacuum with Inteli-Clean System, Slate Blue

This vacuum works very good. But it is very heavy so if you want muscles, this is the vacuum for you. The suction is great, but even with the reduced suction button pressed for area rugs, the suction is still too much. So it's great if you don't have small area rugs. It doesn't get close to baseboards either, but all the other advantages out weight these 2 minor inconveniences. The attachment hose takes a little getting used to as it fits so snugly into it's place that it's hard to push back in. But having it is very convenient. The small rotating brush attachment (used for furniture) isn't very good. The rotating brush stops when applied to material, so the rotation of the brush is useless. Better to use the other brush attachment as that works great on furniture. The best thing about this vacuum is that it doesn't use a FILTER!
...

Very please with the overall function. The Inteli-Clean works well and it picks dirt up well.

Very disappointed with the attachments and hose. The plastic end of the hose split and partly broke off after about a year so it doesn't hold attachments well or stay connected to the bottom unit. The Handi-Mate Jr. is also disappointing. It began jamming and stopped turning within months. Replacement hose is nearly 1/2 the cost of the unit!
...

Purchased this vacuum a year ago when I had thick pile carpet and the vacuum did a wonderful job. It's not the lightest vacuum ever, but even at my small size (5'2"), the vacuum is easily manueverable. We put laminate floors throughout the whole house three months ago and the vacuum's numerous attachments are SUCH a life saver. I also love the mini-vacuum attachment for removing pet hair from couches and delicate rugs. Also, though this vacuum isn't sold as "pet hair friendly", I've never had a problem with clogs. Highly recommend this vacuum.
...

When I went to Sears to buy this vacuum, I had already checked a publication that rates appliances; I knew exactly what I was looking for when I walked into the store. This model was rated higher than a much-advertised, more expensive brand, and it deserves the rating! Its suction power makes cleaning our area rugs and hardwood floors a breeze--we have two dogs and two bird cages (doghair, feathers, seed all over!!!), and this vacuum takes care of everything. The only thing I can't, for the life of me, figure out, is why there is no "on-board" capability for the attachments. Being able to store them on the machine would make it perfect.
...

I've had this vaccum for about 9 months now. My previous vaccum was low-power, bagless, and under $100. This Kenmore has so far met my expectations in terms of power and HEPA filtration. We have two cats and this vaccum does a great job picking up litter and fur on carpet and furniture. My biggest complaints are the lack of edge cleaning (there really is about a 2-3 inch gap along baseboards that doesn't get vacuumed without using attachments) and the weight/maneuverability. We live in a 2-bedroom apartment but recently started cleaning the stairs and hallways in our building for rent credit. As a small-framed woman, I have some difficulty carrying the Kenmore up and down two flights of stairs. The vacuum is also difficult to use in tight areas (it doesn't turn well). Overall, the strength of the suction power (including the attached hose) meets all my needs, and I love the HEPA bags compared to cleaning out a bagless machine (we're only now needing to change the bag). But if I were to...
...

I just purchased this vacuum tonight during the friends and family sales event. The sale personnel people were very knowledgeable and truthful about all the vacuums on the floor for sale. We did mention that previous buyers werent too happy with some of the models on the floor. Including this one. Although the one I bought, I did buy the progressive kenmore with the cloth bag, not the bagless. It seems the bagless has its own problems. Im sure that whenever someone is spending over 200 dollars for a product, they want the reassurance they are getting what they paid for. With this product, you do. That is as simple as I can say it.

I got this vacuum home, I actually put it together myself. (My husband supervised). didnt take but a few minutes. I started in the living room. Right away, I noticed the red light didnt want to go out. So I decided to be patient. Let the vacuum do what it is suppose to do. I am used to vacuuming for 5 minutes and then saying, "im done." With this vacuum, it actually...
...

...the suction at the edges is poor. the attachment extension wand is cheap...the little plastic nubs that hold it onto the main suction tube break off easily. i bought a replacement wand, and the nubs broke off that one in 3 months. also, the lock mechanism for the telecopic attachment wand doesn't stay locked. so i'm constantly having to deal with it retracting. i'd say this vacuum is a lot of frustration when in comes to the attachment parts. i get angry every time i use them. i too bought this based on **************** ratings. do yourself a favor, get a bagless vacuum with solid attachments. you'll save yourself a lot of money on bags, and a lot of frustration while cleaning.
...

Who in their right mind would design a vacuum that cannot be used on stairs? Are you kidding me? Is the designer straight out of the Community Vo-Tech? Argggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! This vacuum cannot be use in the upright position because the roller does not move unless the handle is reclined. So imagine you are vacuuming the stairs and you have to recline the handle to vacuum. Ridiculous. I will never buy another Kenmore vacuum as long as I live (which could be until tomorrow because I'm soooooo mad).

This is a heavy vacuum and as much as I can tell relies on its heft to suck up anything. Do not buy this vacuum without further investigation into other models.
...

I wish it were a little bit lighter-weight...but then I suppose it wouldn't have as much power.

I really like being able to switch from Carpet (spinning brush) to Floor (no spinning brush) without having to stop. The thumb controls on the handle are eas to operate and save time (and bending over to adjust the pile setting).

I have two pets, so I vacuum a lot. Mostly bare floors with some area rugs thrown in. I use the attachments every time I vacuum, although I think they could be better. The wand is poorly designed because; 1) it doesn't lock onto the hose, and 2) the wand keeps collapsing into itself. A dab of duct tape fixed the collapsing, but now it's always long.

Now for the pros; it is very powerful. I love going back to a bag system, I found the cups a pain to empty outside in the winter, I live in the North East. It picks up very fine dust and pet hair like nothing else I've ever used. The cord is long enough to only have to swap outlets once while doing the first floor of my house. I am buying one for my son as a house warming present. I bought this vac because of the Best Buy rating of that magazine and I've never regretted it.
...

First, let's admit that it's difficult to find everything in a vacuum in this price bracket. This vac does a good job of cleaning carpets. It features a powerful motor with good suction and the upright form factor loads its weight on the main brushes, which is a winning combination. It is a fairly heavy machine that glides easily on its wheels (but is too heavy to lug for vacuuming stairs). Edge cleaning is very good as well. The hose and basic attachments provide good suction and the reach is above average. The HEPA filter devours the dust and it's a pleasure to use this vacuum on flat carpets. Now the cons, and they are significant: the sleek design of the machine and its components suggest the parts must be high tech because of the light weight materials. Unfortunately the main brush assembly and the attachments are made of cheap plastic. The attachments come apart too easily and you have to keep putting them back together while you use them. On other vacuums if the beater brush is...
...

At first we were pleased with this vacuum, although it is definitely on the heavy side. It vacuums carpet and pet hair very well. However, because it is so heavy and difficult to maneuver, using the onboard tools can be quite a task. As another reviewer wrote, it does not collect hair very well at the edges so we occasionally have to use the edge tool when we want a really thorough job. Then, after about 18 months, the motor began to go and we were forced to choose between repairing it for half the cost of a new vacuum, or junking it. We decided to repair it because it was cheaper than buying a new one, but once it breaks, we will not be buying the same machine again. There are lighter vacuums out there by other manufacturers that are better made, with less cheap parts, for only slighter more than this vacuum. Not a good bargain, overall.
...

My 20 year old Sears progressive uses the same bags. It is easy to use great features,I bought a Miele and It is awful. I have easier controls on the Sears. They make a great product. I also have a ProVac (back pack style vacuum), it is very good but not as good as sears. the Miele was over 250 dollars. The Pro-Vac was over 400. Ill take a Sears progessive any day, The small Pet hair brush is great. it is also good on stair carpets. If my old pregressive breaks after 20 years Ill get a second newer progressive. one upstairs and one down. The on handle controls are easy to use, the indicator lights a big help. It uses the same bagas as the old machine (savings for me I have tons of bags on hand.

I originally wrote a review back in March or April 09 and as I promised I would re-write my review now that I have had time to live with it. In the original review I wrote that I had recently blown out my shoulder so moving it was painful, I am still rehabbing the shoulder but it is still just as difficult to push and I am back up to lifting very heavy weights. This vacuum is HEAVY...so it is not for the faint of heart or weak. If you are a lovely little old lady or gentleman I would search elsewhere.

If you have whole house, or mainly installed carpeting thoughout your house then this is the vacuum to get, regardless of weight unless you have a bunch of stairs to carry it up and down, otherwise keep on looking for something lighter.

I searched for weeks after purchasing to find an attachment for the hose to be able to vacuum the wood floors...no such luck nothing fit the plastic extension rod...that would have made this vacuum robust and useful for almost all floors. Small area rugs are...
...
