Here are a few of my suggestions for Kmart:

-A dollar section with items priced $1.00 or below. Can openers, cups etc. People are looking for cheap items as their budgets are strained.  A dollar section would be very nice and would sell very nicely.

-A section for crafts.   Wal-Mart is cutting down their craft sections in their remodeled stores to push the consumables.  This section could include craft paint, glue, yarn, paintable items etc.

-Expanded assortment of computer items.  Monitors, skype, games/software for the computer.

Why don't you have someone from Kmart dig back in history to some of its old planaograms for the checkouts. We use to have to fill the checkouts weekly. The items turned. The thought process has changed.

Perhaps management should challenge the buyers with which items would be great checkouts items as well as their gorss % and estimates sales dollars from the checkouts and the gross profit. Once the list is in place then the layout process of the items will come into play and then the vendor contracts for the space etc.

I work in a Sears Home Appliance department inside a Kmart and I really think that the company needs to stream-line the POS system. What we need is to either pick a register that Kmart and Sears both use, or get an entirely new system that serves the needs of both formats. Personally I think the Sears POS is far superior in its functionality. Also, it would be nice to add some of the Sears apparel/home brands in Kmart and visa versa; like Jaclyn Smith at Sears and Cannon River Blues at Kmart, etc. One more thing...I think that adding mattresses to SOME Kmart stores would be nice (kind of like the home appliance in a kmart thing). I have had so many customers ask...do you carry mattresses (by the way, I dont mean air or boxed ones) The dollar section that the last poster just said is a great idea! We need to be more competitive and I think customers would respond well to that. The stores need to be cleaned up as well. For the most part my store is looking good and getting better, but we need to do so much more. Its amazing what a little paint and some new flooring will do! Bright colors would be nice, something fresh.
