Where is Delta Junction?  My husband and his first wife who is deceased had traveled up to Alaska twice and they loved it.  They stayed for 3 months on one trip.  Their younger daughter is married to a retired Air Force man and they had been stationed near Fairbanks.  I have a cousin who lives in Anchorage.  I myself have never been to Alaska but would love to take a trip up there sometime.  My husband and I live in Wendell, Idaho.

Hi arctickatnip! Glad you joined the community. Alaska must be an incredible place to live. There are actually lots of members on the site that are from Alaska. If you go to you profile page and click on FRIENDS AND FANS > VIEW MEMBERS WHO LIVE IN MY STATE, you should see a bunch of users from all over Alaska. Hope that helps!

Well hullo and thank you for asking. I love to talk about Alaska.:-) Delta is the end or the Alaska Hwy. If driving aka AlCanHwy. We're 98 miles south if Fbx where the AlaskaHwy & Richardson Hwy meet. Richardson H. runs from Valdez to Fbx, all the way to oil fields (if that adventurist...But pavent ends just above Fbx.

That Airforce base near here is called Eilson, My son-in-law served there many years ago too. Can see only the airstrips & bldgs from hwy. Anchorage is about 7-8 hr. drive from Delta (depends on pee stops:-) Lovely scenery around every bend if take Rich Hwy., and go down around. Can take Parks Hwy. from Fbx. too but longer for me and not as scenic. I love just far enuf outta town & down in a cul-de-sac that lotsa critters visit as they pass thru from the Clearwater river. Moose love to show off their new ones (even got to raise 4 babies back in '04). Fox, Grizzly, Alot of rabbits. The occasional Raven & Eagles back when had a small dog outdoors. Neighbors and townsfolk become family 'cos most folks are from someplace else. Fight like sibbling at times bit Lord help anyone who may hurt one of our own. I was raised in WA, where my late husband was a logger - we moved up here (sight-unseen) cos my folks lived here then. Ma used to send me local weekly paper...went to work on that paper for years, husband drove school bus & played in local band. That was 1st part of the '80s. Where is Wendell? My dad & "new" wife of 10 years (since Ma died) live in Potlatch, a few miles from Moscow/Pullman. Nice countryside to visit. I'm plannin to grow old(er) right here in Delta. Own my tiny place on 3acres & son around the corner w/his family. Rest of my kids (4 girls) all live out there in the world. I have learned one thing since here - it is a "love it or hate it" kinda state. No grays... Some military (and there are many) wind up staying too. Oh, Ft. Greely, used to be an Army base & is 5miles out of Delta, now is a Missle Defense Site. Was a great boom to our economy. Few years there when it was "warm based" it got real slim but this really picked up so many jobs. Huge gold mine about 30 mi. out another direction. Obviously, I can go on, & on but will leave at this for now. Wuold be happy to ans.any more questions. Come on up. :-)

If your hubby loved it-you probably would too.

Hi Courtney11,

Thank you for the welcome. Nice surprise. I did look on the page about which tou're speaking. Only one that is in Fairbanks thos and I'm talking more locally. Example, You are in Chicago, if you drive 7 to 8 hours southward, where would you be?

That's how far Anchorage and other places can be. :-)

Yup it is a very incredible place to live. Esp. if you fond of small towns, big wildlife, cold in winter but hot in summer, all nite lite and in winter, the nthn lites are fascinating. Been in Delta since Mt StHelens blew & my late husband was a logger. Gonna continue to grow old right here in INTERIOR Alaska :-)

I do have a daughter who is in Jackson, MI. I like to visit there but always glad to get home after too. She misses Alaska but her husband has huge family there and they bought a lovely home too so it's all good. They do enjoy taking the kids and goin over to Chicago. not that long of a drive to them. He lived up here too while he was in the Airforce up in Fairbanks.

Thank you for your tip tho. I will keep checking it out. Have been to all those other places listed for AK but prefer more inland where it's dryer and colder temps. Roads stay dry...for the most part.

Thank you again for your response,

Lori Meek

hullo birddog333,

We do have a grocery store in Delta but it cant beat prices of Wal-Mart, etc, in personal care items & or clothes...

We do get the best in meats and produce. I havedone this so many years now, don't even think about it.. Just plan ahead. Actually saves alot too. Like todayfor examhad an eye dr appointment and tomorrow I've got a cooperative mtg. w/our electric mtg. so will haed back home day after - already pplan to return for another mtg. AND appointment about this time in Mar. - keeps things interresting. and a big plus too is get to go to Quiznos or Wendys or KFc....

Moon is so high & tonite, can reach out and touch it. Only -25 right now. Should be a bit warmer tomorrow but the sun out all day so pretty too.

gota go.

Welcome to the community! I'd love to visit Alaska one day, it really sounds gorgeous. Do you have any pictures of northern lights, wildlife or the landscape there which you can share with us? If so, you can post them in your profile page. Now these would be cool to see!

I'm a native Chicagoan and have stayed here all my life but I think I'm destined for a warmer place (many years from now). I think I can get used to sand, palm trees, ocean water... yep right about now that sounds good! :)

Your shopping trips probably need to be carefully planned. Do you call ahead to see if essentials are in stock? I'll bet ordering online would be convenient, unless shipping charges are high?

As a small child, I always wanted to go to Alaska...

We are waaay in the Interior where it's very dry/no humidity.

The snow falls late Sept./early Oct. and is here to stay until lateish April. There is no "bad" time of year. And small towns are family...cos "blood" relatives live out in the world & most everyone is from someplace else. There is no "grey area" to life here. One either loves it or hates it.

We moved here from WA state in 1982 and we have NO taxes in our area. We have a really nice grocery store right here and the best meats and produce in the Interior. Driving open road to Fairbanks to get Stocked-up on groceries is no big deal. After so many years, kinda know if the better buy is here at home and if in Fbx. - doesn't take that long to go up and back. I really don't know of anything at all that one can't get in Fbx., or even here in Delta???

Even my swimming pool came from here.

Pipeline Days are long gone and prices are pretty much same as out in the world 'cept restaurant food.

I get mail from family in MI w/in 3 days...

Got great sattelite TV reception and I'm writing on wireless connection internet.

It's dog race season now and won't be too long before it's light all nite.

I have moose that come show off their babies and a sow Grizzly will pass thru once in a great while in the spring.

Northern Lites dance from horizon to horizon all nite long, making spirals of color that shoot across into "draperies" bigger than ocean view. Even reflects into the house off the snow when the house lites are off.

The car is cozy and don't need much from than little stretchy gloves if no steering wheel cover. Just keep warm/safe gear along for "just in case". Certainly don't need it on indoors or in the car.

Every day is a new adventure...even a lovely fox who didn't see me thru the window this mornin' was hunting for a vole under a snoplowed embankment.

Summer can get pretty hot too. I do not like 90 degrees so glad those temps never last long.

gotta go alot further North (by plane) to get to polar bears. :-)

I could go on forever about Alaska but s'pose this is a close enuf summary for now. :-)

Wow, you painted a beautiful picture! I'd love to see Alaska someday, even if it takes me a while to get used to the temperature. I really hope you have a chance to load some pictures, though!

I finally got back into town to get online at the library - hope your Valentiny Day was good - ours was. :-)
I've not yet had the priveledge of seein Eagle River but can't immagine living back out there in the world, myself. I'll bet you do really miss it.
I have one youngin' and her family down in MI - I don't know where is Holt but they are in Jackson, MI - just above Indiana/Ohio border. Amazing to me how many Delta folks are in nthn Indiana too.
Thank you for the hullo.

For those of you who'd like to see some really cool photos of area/wildlife, etc. or even local news - there is a site called deltanewsweb.com - there are lots of archives, including photos - it's kinda fun to navigate thru...I have no way to download anything from here. This is a public computer. sorry.
That is a fun site tho - even access the little local newspaper and school sports.
The August 2004 archives even has an article with a "family portrait" of the 4 baby moose I raised after their momma died (old age).
Kinda fun anyway.

Ya know, kinda funny - was just perusing back a tidge on some of these posts....
Used to tell alot of folks, if you're ever at the end of the Alaska Hwy. (aka. Alcan)
turn right and drive 11 miles. stop in and say hi. :-)
Not too many roads (paved ones) so directions are that close to easy. :-) *LOL*

Well Courtney11, if you don't like cold weather, wait a couple months. The pool will be set up and the heat is tollerable cos it's dry too. :-)
No Igloos 'cept what the kids make. This kind of cold is more tollerable to me than when I was living in the mountains of WA State.
For me - wildlife, scenery, small town folks. All the warmth one could ever need. Driving down a road at nite and watching the lights dance - who thinks about the temp????
Playing badmitten in the front yard after midnite in the sun. - who thinks about the temp????
I get the feeling that people who get transferred via military, etc. find themselves having to "get used to" lotsa stuff but have found that roads are dry and sticky - mostly clear. and life is fascinating, the bigger thing to get used to is less people.
We know most all our polititians personally - tho towns are far apart, the people are all one. :-) Does that make any sence?
