Why I Think This Site is Phony

The idea of a retailer reaching out to customers is a great and admirable idea, but I honestly feel this site is phony and not a serious attempt at it.

1. Lack of Sears and K-Mart branding - this site looks nothing like sears.com or kmart.com. The only branding is a tiny logo with the words "SK-YOU"  that looks like a 13 year old did in Photoshop. There isn't even a Sears Holdings Corporation copyright line at the bottom. Any idiot on the internet could lift the Sears and K-Mart logo and create a site.

2. Many screen names seem fake - "Searsmom" and "Iluvsears" are prime examples. To me they appear to be either bots or fake names created to have fake posts.

3. Many posts seem fake - The general language in the posts that are made by the above screennames and by "Staff" simply do not consist with the way people normally speak online or offline. I find it odd that a lot of the screen names that appear to be fake have lavished Sears and K-Mart with praise in posts that appear to be fake.

4. Some of the few people here that I know are real because I have seen them on other forums have suggested some real changes that I know Sears Holdings Corporation would never implement.

5. The software for the forum here is woefully under-powered. A good example is the recent spamming. Any other forum software would have flood controls or CAPTCHA to prevent posts from being posted in those quantities or at that speed. I would also like to add that at any other forum the spammer would have been banned and his posts deleted by moderation staff.

Thats about all I can think of right now. For me, this site is a crock and has no credibility. No BS line from "AskRob" will change that view as I doubt he is even a real person.

If this site is real and the people are real, prove it!

Michelina,

I could not agree more.  The Somerset, NJ KMart is a mess, dirty, not welcoming and always looking like it will close up...perpahs even while I am in it shopping.

Kmart people...fix-up, clean up, and perhaps lot's more of us will shop there.  The location is great!

The K-mart I shop @ is very clean, has been recently renovated and I have NOT had any problems with finding items or finding someone to help.

I just joined and your comment was the first I've read. At first, I admit, all of this sounded strange. If you're like me, then you've probably been scammed or even cheated by some big (impersonal) company or entity at some time. But I do believe in giving people a chance, and in this case, giving that to K-Mart, because I think Wal-Mart is getting too big and needs some competition. I suspect that maybe K-Mart and Sears might be trying some new type of marketing, but will judge this site over time to see if that occurs.

I've noticed that our K-Mart has declined in its customer base over the past few years and think they might be trying to regain their shoppers. Wal-Mart (in our area, and probably in many places) does booming business, by comparison, and I hate to lose K-Mart. It's a name I trust, and they've been around forever. They sometimes have items that other stores don't, though that could be also said for their competitors. They recently had a double coupon promotion at our K-Mart stores that I welcomed, and that saved me money. I haven't seen any other major discount chain do this for quite awhile. With the economy the way it is, my store was crowded with coupon shoppers .

I appreciate your comment in that it will make me more watchful, since I seldom join message boards and blogs, anyway. If this site starts to look really fake or attempts to do anything I don't feel is ethical, I'll unsubscribe. If I were you, I'd give it a chance for a little while longer and see what happens.  Oh, and I am a real person  - but I guess you'll have to take my word for it. Think positive for awhile - maybe something good will happen!

Thanks ShopperMama! I'm glad that you and the other members who really want to help are here! There's no secret formula to making discussion forums work - especially if the nature of the forums is to get feedback on how we can improve. We expect to see some good and some bad but over time hope that it's mostly good and the conversations become more about it's members' own interests.

K Mart needs to be more competitive and improve lighting in the store I shop.  Carts are antiquated as well.  Someone needs to wake up before it's too late.  I'm amazed Grits hasn't had any problems.

I shop at Kmart all the time I remember when customer service was a big thing at kmart, if more than three peoples was in-line wating they would open up another register now they don't care how long you have to wait, what happen to the good old customer service .

I should add that Kmart is in a dying mall 15 miles away but I like one specific item only available at Kmart.  I dread the day when the mall folds entirely.

Well ... I'd HOPE this site is for real ... I for one do shop around for products and I look for reviews all the time.  You sometimes get very good insight about a product you are looking to buy and real people out there like it when others are truthful and candid.  We had a small Sears store nearby that closed down.  The nearest Sears is now an hour from me but I've trusted Sears in the past and I'll always look to them first when making big purchases such as appliances, major appliances, TVs, etc.  I also look at Sears for linens and sporting equipment.  Kmart now carries a good selection (although the Kmart nearest us is really in need of a good cleaning).  But I have to make best with what we have nearby.  The goods and bads of living "in the country".   Website reviews are really good.  We do purchase a lot of items on line and again I search for reviews prior to making purchases.  Any website that I've found reviews on (both good and bad reviews) I always refer back to.  I've even "asked" other people in the cyber world if they've tried products and for their opinions.  I have to trust that there are a few good people left in the world.

Yo! This is my first time also and I am wondering what is going on. I was sent here from a survey for K-mart. Why would they send us to a nonK-mart site. I'm sure that K-mart is paying them a pretty penny for thier service and I'm sure that if K-mart found out we were being scammed they would sue them and pull thier business. We have lost the K-mart in our town. We now go when we are in Vincennes, IN visiting my son in college or when we bring him home for the weekend and drop him off. Wal-mart has invaded us on a major scale with 2 super centers. I miss our K-mart. Watch out or you may be missing yours too someday.

K-mart sends you to this site because the main was purchased by Sears some time ago when they were going bankrupt.  At least that's what I heard.

I'm here because I was sent from a survey about my most recent visit to K-Mart but I'm also here because I had a bad experience and there was no complaint or comment mechanism on the kmart.com website.  So, I seriously doubt K-Mart really gives a....  Dirty stores, surly untrained staff, missing management, unstocked shelves.  Unfortunately K-Mart is the only big box store in my small town.  I'd trade Target for it in a heartbeat.

The "Customer Service" people in my store aren't even required to know what's in their ad and have no idea whether or not anything is in stock.  I would never shop in a K-Mart again if I had a choice, but sometimes I just can't do the trip to the closest city which is 15 miles away.

I don't think this site is phony. It's certainly a marketing and PR tool but I think it was created with it's heart in the right place. I've said a few disparaging things about my local stores, things that need to made aware to the corporation. It turns out my experiences and expectations are not unique. The reviews on the products are also helpful. Keep on keeping on!

Thanks thouse! You're absolutely right that our 'heart' is in the right place.

We have A LOT of loyal Sears and Kmart customers who keep coming back to find merchandise they like and can afford, an environment that makes them feel welcomed and service they can count on. When this doesn't happen, we need to know about it and this site is one of a few ways where the customers' voice can be heard.

Of course this site if for real! We started out pretty small and are growing quickly so you'll always see new names and new products being reviewed.

I'll bet you have some great advice about things you've purchased. Jump right in and write some reviews! You can even review your local Sears and Kmart stores.

I agree with you - It's pretty easy to learn about products before you even make it into the store, with online reviews. I usually check out what people are saying about the things I'm interested in buying so I can make an informed decision.

So, is MICHELINE who lives in Hoffman Estates, IL a  Sears employee since Sears relocated to Hoffman Estates  after they left the Sears Tower in downtown Chicago?

The store in Elkhart, Indiana is small, does  not have enough inventory on some special offers in the flyers.  The store is clean but in a very rough neighborhood even though new strip malls were built there in the same area, but not attached to the old Sears store.  Inside its just an old store, clean floors, it just looks worn out.  Dirty ceiling tile where the air vents are

Do you have any advice on how we can make this site better?

I was directed to this page as well when I did a survey as well. But you were given the choice of joining the community. Honestly if I was not redirected I would have never joined since the website is a tiny inconspicuous weblink at the bottom of the sears.com webpage. However I joined because I can read other reviews besides the ones I already read on sears.com and consumer reports as well as a place to vent or compliment Sears cannot be all that bad. Hopefully things could be resolved. I got good advice about inability to reach someone in the store when I wanted to ask about an appliance I want to buy.  Although I may buy the appliance at a competitor since it is slightly cheaper there.

In response to bajanpassion's post from November 21 2008 06:37PM

bajanpassion, I'm glad you're in the community! Regarding your appliance purchase, have you heard of the Blue Crew? They'll find the best price for appliances and try to do better. You should really check it out, it's worth the couple of minutes if you'll get the best price for the features and brand that you want. Go to sears.com and look for the Blue Crew Appliances links.

You're right that the community link from sears.com and kmart.com should be more visible. We have plans in the works for the coming months to have a clearer presence on both sites so our membership will grow, too. With more people in the site, more discussions and reviews will follow. I've got some other little surprises planned too, but my mouth is zipped for now!

I spent a few minutes and read some of the pros and cons about the site. Just think what we have just done. We have just given Sears/Kmart  our time by being on this site. They have just advertised by the web at  a small cost to them. I believe a mailer may cost 25 to 35 cents and an email cost about 3 cents to do.They are on the tip of our tongs and in our thoughts. The power of free advertising. I believe the site is for real. I have read some of the comments of current and former assos. Whether right or  wrong, the information in the comments relate to my experience with Kmart as an hourly asso. asst. manager, a merchandise manager and then a Store Manager. Retailer do use sites as well as forum groups to change their processes etc. By doing this, the retailer, hopes to become more customer friendly and drive customer traffic thus increasing sales and profits. As far as the standards of a store, the standards are a reflection of the GM. I can rememebr transferring into some real ruff stores and having to clean them up. Once the assocaites get use to your new standards, they will either rise to the occassion and develope pride in their store, leave or be asked to be leave. As far as the merchandising, I am not sure of how it is now since I have been out of the company a while but when I started we ordered goods by the MSI machine, hand wrote orders and mailed them out US mail . Before I left, we started the CMAR process in departmet 6, smalls, and then for all departments. We still had the ability to buy goods as well as adjust Return Sheets, Call for Orders, and GOs.etc.We still bought our Check Off Sheets for the most part as well as adjust our Department 43 plant orders. We were merchants. I would buy about 40 to 50 ends in Sept. to be delivered in late Nov./early December of high gross goods to go out as the Christmas goods sold down. We also bought the additional goods for the seasonable flex counters in addition to what the buyers bought for us. These were goods that I sold day in and day out so there is no  liability as far as markdowns.

Stores that are out of stocks on basic items may be still able to adjust thier mim/max numbers if the store still has control over this to increase their levels of a sku of an itme on hand/on order. Not sure if they can still do this or have a cat. review of department by corp.

Coming out of Christmas and into January stores may see in certian departments a few more outs due to inventory control measures at year end. There were items in certain departments there were A,B, or C itmes and C itmes were cut off until sold out and B items were trimmed back until Feb.of the next year. This way one has less slower inventory in stores to pay taxes on at year end.as well as carry cost of the item. Stores may also see a lot of PLC taking some items up in price to increases ones Gross percent for Jan's year end.

This may not still be done but use to be done each year and prices taken back down in Feb.

As we know you have to have 2 of the following 3 itmes to make any money, SALES, GROSS, EXPENSES. You have to control 2 of the 3 to make money. I never lost money in a store in January. Why, because the amount of your sales times your gross % that you own the goods a,t minus your expenses is your profit. If you load your self up with above average hight gross goods in December, you go into January with an above average gross thus making money.

I believe the site is real and will continue to put my 2 cents in from now to then for what it is worth.

Merry Christmas
